If you are looking for affordable and decent Chinese food then head
straight to Kimli. It
situated in a lane near Hindustan Park. Prices are low but portions are huge. The
setting is very oriental in the use of colour schemes and paper lanterns. This
only adds to the charm of the restaurant.
The restaurant is famous for
its duck preparations. The famous Chilli Duck dish really packs a punch. It is
a well prepared dish. The meat is always luscious and tender and goes well with
their noodles especially the Thai noodles. The tartness of the noodles
complements the flavours of the duck meat. Since duck preparations are their specialty,
do not miss their Teriyaki
Duck. It is served in a delicious looking and tasty red teriyaki gravy. Other
items to be had here are their Red Pepper Chilli Garlic Prawn and Golden Chicken.
They make some of the spiciest schezwan dishes and are therefore not meant for
the faint hearted!
Unlike many Chinese eateries that serve similar tasting gravy items;
at Kimli the gravy does not seem to overpower the flavours of the meat or seafood
pieces that are served with gravy. The right choice of sauces can also make or
break a restaurant. With Kimli, the establishment has ticked all the right
boxes. They serve two kinds of chutney - fiery sweet and tart green chutney and
tomato-garlic chutney. The last chutney adds the required sweetness to any
schezwan dishes.
Despite their space crunch, the service is always prompt and
efficient. The servers are friendly and well mannered. They are also eveready
to tweak their dishes to suit the diner’s needs. Like many of the Chinese
eateries in Kolkata, they do not serve pork, which was a bit of a letdown for
me.
