Delicious Chinese food down south!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Naktala in the south of Kolkata really surprises you with some really good food outlets. Mimi’s Kitchen is one such place that rustles up simple and tasty Chinese fare. No matter how many times you eat at this place, the taste remains the same. About three months back, I got the opportunity of ordering Chinese fare from this place. The place offers Chinese delicacies at moderate prices.

Above all their offerings, it is their soups that simply make my day. Their spicy soup dishes, namely hot and sour and manchow soup are my clear favourites amongst all their soups. The flavours and the meat along with the vegetables leave you feeling full and energised in no time. Having begun your meal on such a note, the other preparations did not disappoint either.

Their starters (like chicken drumsticks, golden fried prawns, and pepper fish) are terrific. Equally appetizing is their momos (whether steamed or fried); they do not disappoint you with their generous and juicy meat stuffing.

Similarly all the other meat dishes are juicy and succulent. Though they may be covered in a thick gravy, they are never soggy. Quantities are good and a person with very small appetite will find difficult to finish one dish. Yet their dishes are value for money especially regular chilli prawn, sweet and sour prawn, hot garlic chicken, Sichuan chicken and Manchurian fish. Though they can be had with fried rice and Hakka or gravy chow, it is their mixed Mei foon that deserves the place of honour on your table. Their light, long and soft textured Mei foon is cooked to perfection.

It is always a pleasure to have food from this restaurant; the comfortable chairs, the cosy atmosphere and the polite and well mannered servers make this place a must visit.

Food not fit for us commoners!

Rating: 0.5 out of 5

Lords Restaurant, located on Ultadanga Main Road is not a place that makes you feel very lord-like. Though it is conveniently located at a busy thoroughfare, the food and the environment make it a miss and blink wonder. The place is too small and cramped for comfort. Even inside an air conditioned room, the stuffy and suffocating environment just ruins the whole dining experience. Considering the poor food quality and quantity, this is definitely not the place you want to spend your hard earned money at. At such prices, there are other much better restaurants that you can go to. Though they offer all kinds of dishes, it is better to stick to regular Chinese basics. One should avoid experimenting here, especially with pork and mutton dishes. The only positive was their service, which was prompt and efficient.

Their Chinese fare is decent and preparations are average. Though they offer all kinds of soups; some of them seem to lack adequate seasoning and some were really bland, yet their sweet corn soup (As I mentioned earlier stick to the usuals here!) was well prepared. Among their meat items, chicken is the only meat that they seem to cook properly and that tastes satisfactory. Of all the chicken side dishes, try only their chicken lollipops, drums of heaven and chilli chicken. Seafood dishes can be given a miss entirely as they do not taste the same no matter how many times you send it back (we tried thrice!). Sometimes, all their dishes taste almost the same. Regular fried rice options like mixed fried rice and chicken fried should be ordered. The same goes for their chow items too.

Though they offer desserts to round off the meal, by the time you have eaten your meal you will not stick around for desserts anymore.

Theque The Foodwala

Rating: 3 out of 5

If you want to have Chinese food from a restaurant in Santoshpur, look no further than Theque The Foodwala. This place is recommended only for takeaway - they don’t offer a dine-in option. Acting on one of my friend’s recommendations, I went there and parcelled some items. The service was quick and everything was ready without having to wait for too long. The food is reasonably priced. The quantity and quality of their preparations are not to be doubted.

Soups like chicken Thai soup, chicken and hot and sour soup were well seasoned and bursting with flavour. The same though cannot be said for their sweet corn soup, which I feel requires more seasoning.

The Tibetan chicken momos (steamed) make a complete wholesome meal. Other starters that might tickle your taste buds and which you should not miss are crispy chicken, golden fried prawns and chicken gold coin. The crispness of the meat pieces will certainly impress you along with their succulent and juicy flesh.  The money that you spend on their side dishes is worthwhile. Chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken and Sichuan prawn are dishes that they seem to prepare well.
Staples like fried rice, Hakka chow and Mei foon should be the norm here. They do not leave a heavy feeling in your stomach and are wonderful non-oily options.

They also offer both veg and non veg combo meals at affordable rates. The quality and quantity of such meals should leave you full.

Little Tangra truly goes with its name

Rating: 3 out of 5

When you are about to write a restaurant review, the primary thing that I like to focus on is the quality and quantity of food served. Service, ambience and rates are also important but it is the food that clinches it for me. If a restaurant achieves its primary goal flawlessly then one needs to consider it a highly rated restaurant and give it due credit. The same goes with Little Tangra, which is relatively a small food joint located on Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick Road at Garia. I walked into this place purely by accident.

Little Tangra is a restaurant in the true sense as it never compromises with its food quality, no matter how much it lags in ambience compared to other eating hubs near it. There is nothing much to talk about its ambience (hence the 3 out of 5 rating) because although this food joint provides dine-in options the seating arrangements are very poor. The only good thing about its ambience is that the place is clean and maintains basic hygiene. I would suggest – opt for take-away.

Now, if anyone considers this a huge drawback they will surely miss a great chance to pacify their taste buds with some awesome Chinese preparations. I did this the first time I was there, but when I tasted their preparations, my notion about this place changed and I have now become a die-hard fan of this restaurant. The credit for this goes to the chef of this simple restaurant. Many top rated Chinese restaurants will come up short when it comes to food when compared this relative less popular and small food joint.

Try their Szechwan Fried Rice (chicken or veg) with Hunan Chicken; you will fall in love with this combination. Some other delectable preparations include Roasted Chilli Chicken, Fish Manchurian, Golden Fried Prawn, Chicken in Black Bean Sauce and Singapore Rice Noodles. Apart from experiencing top class culinary art, you won’t mind paying the meagre amounts they charge. Try some take-away from Little Tangra for some nice authentic Chinese!

Blue Sky Café serves everything you need

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

After managing the huge crowd of New Market, whenever I feel the need for some real refreshment, only Blue Sky Café comes to mind. Located in Sudder Street, this café is something more than a normal restaurant as it offers a lot of options on its menu, from Chinese to Indian, Continental, Italian as well as light snacks, desserts and beverages. Compared to its small size and off-beat location, the menu is quite lengthy and the food is good.

Whenever you step into this café cum restaurant, you will come across a lot of foreigner diners; sometimes you will find you’re the only Indian among the other diners (barring the staff and your companions). This is a common scenario here. Coming to the ambience, there is nothing extraordinary to talk about. The tables and chairs are arranged in rows so this small food joint can accommodate a larger number of diners. So, if you are planning a private lunch or dinner with your date, you’d better avoid this place because you may have to sit beside a stranger to have your meal here as this place is always full.

Service is very fast and effective, with a homely touch to their service. To start with, the food is really good. I haven’t tasted many of their main course dishes, although I have been there many times. So far, we’ve ordered Chicken Momo (in all the three forms), Pan Fried Chilli Chicken, Barcetta Pizza, Penne Grilled Chicken Salad, Tandoori chicken and chicken reshmi and tikka kabab. Every item on that list was really wonderful and Blue Sky Café demands repeat visits. I have realized that this place is really the “Jack of all Trades”. In addition, when it comes to paying the bill, you will never have to worry as their prices are really on the lower end. This place deserves a better rating than its peers as Blue Sky Café can always tantalize your taste buds with its delightful preparations.

Do not look at Chung Wah – No matter how hungry you are!

Rating: 0.5 out of 5

It really hurts you when an old favorite starts deteriorating day by day in all respects and becomes a dreadful place for you to visit. Now, as I sit down to write about this place, it is difficult to find the appropriate words, as Chung Wah restaurant in Chadni Chowk was once one of the popular Chinese restaurants in Kolkata, though now it is truly a horrible place to visit!
The last time I was there nearly three years back, the place was average at best but this time, it was a horrible experience for me. Last Saturday, I went there with a few friends and was so shocked to enter the place. How badly the décor and ambience has deteriorated. There was no one to welcome us, all the waiters were busy gossiping and laughing.
We seated ourselves and asked for the menu. This time, they showed some activity and handed us a menu quickly. We ordered Chicken Chow (Gravy) and Chicken Chow (Hakka) along with Chilli Chicken and Manchurian Chicken. After placing our order, we had to wait for over 20 minutes to get our orders served on the table despite no real traffic. Chicken Chow (Gravy) from Chung Wah restaurant once used to be a heavenly preparation; so I ordered it thinking that it will bring back some good culinary memories (on my recommendation, one of my friends also did the same), but the gravy chow they served us was a fry cry from the one that Chung Wah used to serve earlier. I was embarrassed in front of my friends a wee bit as I had suggested we go there for lunch. The Hakka chow was barely edible, while the chilli chicken and Manchurian were truly appalling with very little chicken and too much stuffing. To make matters worse, they didn’t even taste like Chinese preparations!
I wonder how a once-reputed Chinese joint like this can prepare such poor Chinese preparations (sorry, I cant even describe them as Chinese preparations!). The staff has absolutely no manners and seriously need to learn some etiquette. The place rubs you on the wrong side in every respect. Its only advantage is perhaps its location which is the only explanation why such a horrible restaurant is still running.

Food and “Fusion”!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Fusion near Star Theatre is one of those places that looks pretty on the outside but still requires some amount of improvement on the inside. It is a smart looking place with comfortable and well arranged sitting arrangements. The place has a certain amount of natural feel to it due to the glass walls. The service can be inconsistent sometimes; prompt and efficient on the one hand and slow and incompetent on bad days. On days that you are not in a hurry such inefficiency can be overlooked. There is also lack of consistency with regards to the quantity of the food served to the diners. The quality on the other hand is fresh and healthy. Both their Chinese and North Indian preparations are satisfactory. The price of food is also acceptable and within a reasonable range.

From their very limited soup options, you can savor some nice chinese flavors with their chicken hot and sour soup, chicken manchow soup and sweet corn soup. Their Chinese starters (like chicken 65, crispy chicken, chicken drumsticks and golden fried prawns) are delish items.

They can be very generous with their fried rice and noodle staples. You need to keep this in mind while you order them. Some top noodle and fried rice picks to be had from here can be their mixed Sichuan Hakka chow, chicken Hakka chow, mixed Sichuan fried rice and mixed fried rice. Some of the side dishes to go with these dishes are the usual Chinese basics like chili chicken, sweet and sour prawn, Manchurian fish and Sichuan prawn.

Their north Indian preparations are worth a shot though I didn’t much care for them. Kebabs like chicken tandoori, chicken reshmi kebab and mutton bare kebab were well prepared and can be had as starters.

Tasty food from a local eatery!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Of the many food outlets in Wellesley, Arafat Chinese restaurant is a value for money kind of place. This very simple looking food outlet creates decent Chinese fare. Despite their name, their north Indian dishes are delightful preparations. Their speciality might in fact lean towards their north Indian delicacies (strange but true). The comfortable sitting arrangements only serves to further enhance your dining experience. The prices are reasonable and justify the kind of food served here. The food does not take very long to arrive at your table; you will always get piping hot food here.

They make very flavoursome and light soups that are well seasoned and contain a good amount of meat and vegetables. Whether it is their hot and sour soup or Thai soup, all of them have a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness, spiciness and sourness. Even their sweet corn soup is tasty and heart warming.

Some of those delightful preparations that you can sample are chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken, Manchurian chicken and Sichuan chicken. Their one plate of fried rice and Hakka or gravy noodle will prove quite a task for people with a very small appetite to demolish.

The place is essentially a great place for having north Indian dishes. Their biryanis (though not like the ones that you get in north Indian restaurants Shiraz or Zeeshan) are definitely satisfactory in taste and flavour. Thus, do not hesitate to try out their light but aromatic chicken and mutton biryanis. For meat lovers, their juicy and succulent kebabs are one of a kind. Chicken tandoori, chicken reshmi kebab and chicken tikka kebab are some dishes that you have to order here. Even their mutton rezala, mutton chhap and chicken masala are mouth melting options that go really well with their rotis.

Value for money meal@ Zaafran Restaurant!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Zaafran Restaurant at 9 Chowringhee Lane is one of those value for money food joints. This very simple and ordinary looking restaurant believes in letting its food speak for itself. They do definitely churn out some mind blowing and delicious Chinese fare. The place exudes cosiness and comfort; this is evident in their well arranged and comfortable sitting arrangements. The place is perfect for people with a very low budget. The service is quick and fast; the staff are competent people who believe in serving the food with a smile.

Like I said earlier, their Chinese fare is simply mouth watering, fast and fresh food options. Their soups are delicious and nutritious as well. The soups (be it chicken hot and sour soup, tom yum soup or sweet corn soup) are full of flavour and are well seasoned. But the first two soups might be very spicy for those who like their soups to be less fiery. Sweet corn soup is the ideal choice for those with a delicate palate.

With regards to their staples, they offer a wide range of fried rice and noodle dishes. Items like mixed fried rice, chilli garlic fried rice and Sichuan fried rice are not only well prepared but seem to go well with their many veg and non veg side dishes. Likewise, their well cooked Hakka chow items are also delightful preparations and are perfect main course combination along with the side dishes. Whether it is the Sichuan mixed noodles or chilli garlic Hakka chow, you can be rest assured that they are non greasy and light preparations.

A meal is incomplete without ordering side dishes. Some of the popular ones that worth ordering and demolishing here are chilli chicken, sweet and sour prawn, Manchurian fish and many of the other regular Chinese side dishes – you will not go wrong here if you stick to the usual staples.

Hang out at Lytton hotel for a change!

Rating: 3 out of 5

There are many good and affordable food joints in the New Market area. Of them, the Dynasty Restaurant in Lytton Hotel is a must visit. If you are planning to have a classy lunch or dinner in a classy area, then this is the place to be. The interiors exude sophistication and elegance like no other place in Kolkata. The stylish décor and the comfortable sitting arrangements simply make having your meal here a complete experience. Though they serve both Thai and Chinese dishes; it is their Chinese offerings that shine out. The dishes are priced a bit too high in my opinion but the food is nice. The service deserves much appreciation too. The servers are polite and well informed; very attentive to every need of the diner.

To begin with, their starters do not have any rivals. Items like golden fried prawns, chicken spring roll and chicken gold coin are wonderful snack options. They are not only light but very golden and crispy as well. They had been fried to perfection. Their soups are delightful and heart warming dishes. Crab sweet corn soup and noodle soup are scrumptious options. There is a nice balance of flavours and a generous dose of meat and vegetables in all of their soups. One most important fact that one must remember while dining here is that their hot and spicy dishes might be too fiery for people with a very sensitive palate. Nonetheless, it should not stop you from ordering them; they can be tweaked to suit your needs. They complement the fried rice and noodle staples served here very well and provide a wholesome meal.

A meal is normally not complete without ordering dessert, which is a shame as dessert options are not many and varied here. Nevertheless, they offer the usual ice cream flavours, tutti fruity and the like.

Delicious food from a Chinese kitchen!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Jackie’s Chinese kitchen near Ballygunje Phari is very popular among diners of South Kolkata. The authentic and tasty Chinese fare served here makes it very much sought after by Chinese food lovers. On the basis of the food quantity and quality, the price charged for the food is affordable and reasonable. The service is prompt and efficient. You can either have your food there or pick it up.

Some of the starters at Jackie’s Chinese Kitchen are definitely worth trying. They are heart warming and delightful preparations. Drums of heaven, spring chicken, chicken momos and chicken wanton are must haves items here. The momos and wantons are big with juicy meat filling inside. Spring chicken and drums of heaven, on the other hand, are crispy and fried to perfection, but they still retained their juiciness and softness. Equally heart warming were their soups like Thai soup, tom yum soup and sweet corn soup.

Side dishes (whether veg or non veg) are filling, delightful preparations. Though all of them taste nice (and are value for money options), they are some that rank higher than the others. From their poultry section their chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken and Sichuan chicken stand out. Some good seafood options include Manchurian fish, sweet and sour prawn and Sichuan prawn or fish. The veg options cannot be ignored, and their veg Manchurian and sweet and sour veg are tasty vegetarian dishes.

You can have them with fried rice options like chicken fried rice and mixed fired rice. But it is their Mei foon that deserves a special place. The chicken and mixed Mei foon dishes are non oily and light rice noodle preparations. After having their Mei foon preparations, we did not need to order any of the other staples.

Host Chinese Restaurant – Truly great hosts!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Host Chinese Restaurant in Block B of Lake Town definitely serves up some delicious Chinese fare. Though I was there last year, the memory of the food I had there still makes me salivate. The cosy and comfortable environment simply enhances the whole dining experience. The place not only provides adequate but comfortable sitting arrangements. With regards to their food, though it’s only regular, basic Chinese fare, the taste of the food here is simply splendid.

Their starters make juicy and scrumptious options. They are crispy and mouth watering preparations. Some of the starters worth mentioning are chilli baby corn, chicken spring roll and chicken drumsticks.

Their fried rice and noodle staples are light and non oily preparations. Fried rice options like mixed fried rice and chicken fried rice are also quite decent. The rice is not dry and the meat pieces are visibly enough. Likewise, noodles like chicken Hakka chow, prawn Hakka chow and mixed chow cannot be given a miss and must be an integral part of your meal here, though it is their side dishes that they are most sought after. A dish like sweet and sour prawn comes with beautiful and juicy prawns covered in rich and tangy gravy.

Sadly, they only offer ice cream such as vanilla, chocolate and strawberry – helping you end your meal on a very sweet note but with limited choices.

The food does not take very long to reach your table from the kitchen. The food served is still fresh and piping hot. The quantity served here is good so you need keep your capacity to eat in mind before you order. Going in groups is the best way to enjoy food there. If you are on the lookout for affordable and well priced food, this place is worth checking out the next time you are in the area.

Tasty treats from your local food joint!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Last year in the month of October, after dropping some relatives off at Sealdah station I had the opportunity to checked out Chinese Cuisine at 104/A, APC Road. The restaurant beckons you with its heady aroma of Chinese fare which is served in a cosy and warm environment. The comfortable sitting arrangement and a well prepared menu are some of the positives of this restaurant. The food items are priced reasonably and judging by the food quality, the rate quoted is justified. The service is fast and efficient. The competent and well mannered servers are very considerate and attentive to the needs of diners.

Begin your meal here with soup options like chicken hot and sour soup, chicken sweet corn soup and Thai soup. Alternatively, their well made and authentic Tibetan chicken thukpa soup can also be tried. The soup immediately warms your heart with its generous amount of meat and vegetables well cooked with very long noodles. Similarly, their noodles (whether hakka or gravy style) are filling because they contain a good helping of vegetables and meat pieces. Side dishes for the main course are not only tasty and delicious but are light on your tummy as well, and spicy dishes like Sichuan chicken, chilli chicken, chilli fish and chilli prawn do not leave any kind of burning feeling in your stomach. If you are a rice lover, do not hesitate to order their mixed fried rice.

Your meal can be rounded off with basic ice cream options like vanilla ice cream, two in one and butter scotch – there’s nothing else available.

“Chinese Brasserie” and Chinese food!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Even in places like the Jessore Road area, you will come across some very good food outlets that serve awesome Chinese fare. The food joint Chinese Brasserie is one such place that needs mentioning in this review. The restaurant was a chance discovery on a hot summer day in the month of May. The restaurant might look ordinary but their comfortable sitting arrangements will definitely make having food here a comfortable experience. The service is the sort that will leave no room for complaint. The servers are friendly and well mannered and the food is served in a prompt and efficient manner; you get it straight from the kitchen, fresh and piping hot! With regards to their food they do not offer anything fancy. Here, you will only get regular Chinese basics. The food options are not only delightful to taste but stomach filling as well.

Typical veg starters like chilli baby corn and chilli mushroom can make the day of any vegetarian. Even their non veg starters are not far behind in satisfying the appetite of meat eaters. Among their many options you can try their chilli chicken (dry), golden fried prawns, chicken in dry lemon chilli sauce and Hakka chicken. Their chicken momos are wonderful and make a good juicy starter option too.

As side dishes and for your main course, the items on offer won’t leave you feeling disappointed. Items worth having and which you should try here are sweet and sour prawn, chilli garlic fish, hot garlic prawn, honey chilli chicken and Manchurian fish. The servings are ample and the meat pieces are tender and juicy. Their staples (whether it is their fried rice or noodles) contain a generous amount of meat and vegetables.

FOOD AT A TRENDY RESTAURANT!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Dan Sin Quin in Tangra tries to stand out from among the other restaurants through its stylish and trendy décor. The restaurant is very spacious with comfortable and adequate sitting arrangements. The tables and chairs are well placed and are neatly divided. There are figurines and statues at appropriate places. The pictures on the walls further enhance the elegance of the place. The service is fast and efficient with courteous and friendly staff who will even guide you in your food selection.

Besides the glamorous setting of the restaurant, the food served is equally attractive and appealing. The preparations are not only tasty but authentic as well. They have many and varied starters on offer.  Although all of their starters are delightful preparations, some highly popular and tasty ones are fried wantons and chilli baby corn – this is actually a great place for vegetarians to visit. Equally delightful treats are their non veg starters like konjee crispy lamb, five spiced chicken, lat Mei kai and fried prawns. Their soups are not only light but well seasoned and bursting with flavour. Soups like tom yum soup, hot and sour soup and manchow soup have the perfect balance of spiciness, sourness, sweetness and saltiness.

For the main course, the side dishes that you cannot simply resist from ordering are chilli fish, hot garlic chicken, chilli wine chicken, chilli roasted lamb (my top pick!) and sweet and sour prawns. To go with these very succulent and tender meat dishes you can order any of their rice and noodle staples. The food portions are ample and quite filling.  You can end your meal here with their dessert selections which (surprisingly for a Tangra restaurant) includes darsaan, date pancake, toffee walnut and choice of ice creams.

Dining in such a place is definitely worth every single penny. The food is neither priced too high nor too low. They definitely want to provide a complete dining experience which includes good food in a comfortable and sophisticated setting, something I wash all other restaurants in Tangra would try to do.

Good old Chinese food!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Mini Hut, in the ever busy Gariahat area, is definitely one of those places where you get tasty and delicious Chinese food. The place is very popular among diners of all kinds. The small and ordinary looking restaurant serves some highly affordable Chinese dishes. Though it is not spacious, the warm and cosy ambience makes up for this deficiency. The servers were friendly and very prompt with their service. The food does not take very long to arrive on your table and all the items mentioned in the menu were available. They serve food in generous quantity as well.

Among their soup offerings, hot and sour soup and Thai soup were good. The broth was not only light but had a good amount of meat and vegetables in it. The non veg starters we tried (drums of heaven, lat Mei kai and lemon honey chicken) were mouth watering! The meat pieces were succulent and tender.

Their chicken side dishes for the main course were equally well prepared and delicious. We tried dishes like shanghai chicken, kung pao chicken, and Hunan chicken. Their seafood side dishes are also good though we did not try any. One can try dishes like hot garlic fish, burnt garlic fish, chilli wine prawns, chilli prawn and prawns in lemon coriander sauce.

Their rice and noodles were light and non greasy which is great for those who like to eat healthy. The noodles were soft and are served with generous amount of meat in them. Their fried rice dish was scrumptious and not dry either. The food quality of this place is not a cause for concern at all, as the food served is fresh, fast and healthy.

The convenient location and the excellent food make Mini Hut a good stopover for all who come to Gariahat for shopping.

YUMMY CHINESE FOOD NEAR COLLEGE SQUARE!

Rating: 3 out of 5

The food eatery called Gunjan Chinese Food can be another dining out option the next time you are in the College Street area. It definitely needs to be included in your long list of Chinese restaurants. The food prepared here is not only tasty but light on the pocket as well. The joint is a no frills kind of place. This is a very ordinary looking restaurant but they do provide comfortable sitting arrangements. The food is served without any delay and reaches you fresh and piping hot. The servers are not only friendly but efficient too. The Chinese food served is very simple and light.

Their soups are wonderfully made - from seasoning to flavours their soups do not falter in any department, though it is their pork noodle soup that is the winner of them all. The noodles are soft and thick with a sufficient amount of pork meat. The pork and the soup can drive away all your blues. But if you are looking for some hotness in your soup, their hot and sour soup and manchow soups are must try.  The soups are fiery without being overtly so.

Their meat dishes are the ones that you should look out for (sorry vegetarians, you should sit this one out!). Their meat pieces are juicy and tender. Even at half a plate, the amount of meat is enough for one person, especially people with really small appetites might find one dish difficult to demolish. Thus, dishes like chilli chicken, sweet and sour prawn, pork mushroom veg, roast chilli pork, and Manchurian fish should not be missed but tried one at a time if you are along or just two. They go very well with their chilli garlic Hakka chow items like pork chilli garlic chow, mixed chilli garlic chow and special chilli garlic chow. Even their fried rice dishes are well made.

GOOD AND TASTY FOOD FROM “KOWLOON”!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Kowloon in New Alipore is very well known for its well cooked and authentic Chinese food. It has the look and feel of a typical Tangra Chinese restaurant. Once you go in, you will find comfortable and proper sitting arrangements. On the basis of their food quality and quantity, the items are priced neither too high nor too low. The food served is fresh, fast and healthy. The service is quick and prompt. The servers are very attentive to your need and very courteous.

Starters like Chicken drum sticks, spring chicken, gold coin prawns, fry pepper fish and pork cutlet are delightful Chinese preparations here. Soups like Thai soup, chicken hot and sour soup and manchow soup are light and fresh soup preparations. The soups contain a good amount of meat pieces and vegetables. They are not only refreshing but filling too.

Their pork dishes are very popular among diners. Pork dishes like hot garlic pork, Sichuan pork, chilli pork and Manchurian pork are fiery hot preparations. Their roast pork can be compared to the same served in high end restaurants (come here just for this if nothing else!). The meat is soft and juicy and the skin has that particular glaze which you would expect from such a dish.

To go along with their side dishes, you can order staples like chopsuey, fried rice, chow and Mei foon. But it is their Mei foon that deserves special mention. Their mixed Mei foon is a wonderful option and one that goes very well with the pork dishes. But if you love spicy main staples, then you can try either Sichuan fried rice or Sichuan Hakka chow.

You can end your meal here with their very limited dessert offerings like vanilla, kesar pista and other regular ice creams. Alternatively, you can order for their pot of well brewed jasmine tea, ending your meal on a completely healthy note.

EDIBLE CHINESE FOOD IN ONE OF THE BUSIEST AREAS IN SALT LAKE

Rating: 2 out of 5

Benfish is one of the longest running and oldest food joints in Salt Lake. The place is very popular and almost everyone working or living there knows about it and frequents it for its yummy food. The place is a small food outlet located at the Karunamoyee crossing. Hence it is very easy to locate it as it is situated in one of the busiest areas in Salt Lake. Despite being a small outlet, the menu offers a wide range of food items. The terms ambience and décor DO NOT apply to this outlet.

The food quality though is not the same anymore. The food quality seems to have experienced a decline. Yet the place does dish out some lip smacking food options. Their very popular items which you will find nowhere else in Kolkata this cheap and tasty are their chilli liver and chilli mushroom. The dishes come with generous amount of chicken liver and mushroom balanced with the right amount of chillies. The servings are ample for both of these dishes.

Their fried rice items are considered by many to be the best among all their items. Some of their specials are ham fried rice; pork fried rice and mixed fried rice. Noodles like chicken with prawn Hakka chow and pork with prawn Hakka chow can be delightful preparations. Yet the noodles can be way too salty sometimes and the quality of chicken items can be questionable at times as well. Nonetheless, certain meat items worth sampling includes their garlic chicken Manchurian prawn, fish with mushroom, sweet and sour ham, chilli ham and Sichuan pork.

At times, the food can give you the feeling of having the same taste. For people who are not accustomed to oily food their food might appear to be way too oily, but sadly that is how they make their dishes (regarded as tasty by many in the area).

Some of their tastiest items are drums of heaven, Manchurian fish (dry), chilli garlic prawn, pepper chicken and other mouth watering items. Equally tantalizing are their veg starters like chilli corn, chilli garlic mushroom, spinach corn wanton and veg Manchurian. Their well seasoned and light soups are also delightful preparations.

A special mention must be made of their manchow soup, hot and sour soup, tom yum Kung soup and spicy corn soup. The soups are served with lots of vegetables and meat pieces that leave you feeling full. As side dishes, their non veg and veg items are equally substantial and mouthwatering. Sweet and sour veg, mix veg in black bean sauce or in Sichuan sauce go great with both noodle and fried rice staples. Some wonderful and aromatic fried rice dishes prepared by them are their burnt garlic fried rice, Korean fried rice and ginger capsicum fried rice. To go with fried rice some worthy main course non veg side dishes are their sweet and sour fish, Sichuan fish, chilli oyster prawn, Kung pao chicken and hot garlic chicken.
