Any person living in Kolkata for
a few years who is acquainted with the popular food joints and coffee shops
here must have heard about Indian Coffee House.
Frequented by coffee lovers, college students, intellectuals, journalists,
aspirant politicians and writers, Indian Coffee House is one of the oldest
cafes in Kolkata if not India. Established in 1942, Indian Coffee House at
College Street area, Kolkata was frequented by eminent personalities including
Satyajit Ray, Amartya Sen, Aparna Sen, Manna Dey, Mrinal Sen and many more. At
one time, Indian Coffee House was the rendezvous point for well known scholars,
editors, teachers, artists, filmmakers, journalists and aspiring politicians. Later,
a new branch was opened at Jadavpur, which though much different from the
original Coffee House and hardly visited by eminent personalities, is
frequented by college and university students.
Although I have been living in
Kolkata for many years, I never got a chance to eat at Indian Coffee House,
located at 15, Bankim Chatterjee Street, College Street, Kolkata. But once I
got an opportunity to visit Indian Coffee House, located at A/2, CIT Market,
Jadavpur Kolkata. I went there with a friend of mine for some refreshments and
got a feel of the traditional Coffee House that people often talk about.
Although the place was bit stuffy and smoke from cigarette stubs chagrined me,
nevertheless I liked the atmosphere and the ambience. The conglomeration of
people – from college students to merry couples added color to this place. I
also liked the munchies and black coffee at Indian Coffee House.
Oft times I heard from my father that the chicken Afghani, mutton cutlet and
the Moglai paratha offered at Indian Coffee House are very delicious!
Remembering his words, I didn’t even check the menu and ordered these items and
some Infusion coffee.
Everything tasted awesome with
infusion coffee! And what more we enjoyed these delicious munchies without
burning a hole in our pocket! Here, you can get some scrumptious munchies at
very reasonable rates. No matter where you are in College Street or Jadavpur,
just drop in here for some coffee and snacks.
