“The Best South Indian Food Joint in Kolkata?!?”

3.5 out of 5

A South Indian Restaurant that can easily be compared to YUMMRAJ’s favorite South Indian Restaurant, Murugan Idly Chennai is Jyoti Vihar, Kolkata. Located at Ho Chi Minh Sarani, near Theatre Road, the place is always full of shoppers, families, office goers and students. The secret to this is the superior quality of South Indian food they serve here.

Jyoti Vihar is a small South Indian restaurant which now is a part of kolkata’s heritage. The vintage (in the true sense of the word!) interiors of Jyoti Vihar with mosaic flooring, the wood paneling and old style table and chairs will remind you of your childhood days, probably because they are the same chairs you sat on then! This eatery breathes nostalgia, great memories and heritage in its every corner. If you don’t believe me, ask any regular here and they will tell you.

Well, their service is quite fast and courteous. The restaurant is clean and hygienic. They serve delicious South Indian food at slightly steeper than earlier prices – I know as I visit this restaurant every week! During lunch time, at around 1:00 in the afternoon the place full of people, and you WILL have to wait for your turn and get a token.

Their idly with sambhar (that they serve hot) is fresh, soft and beautifully steamed – some say it is the best in Calcutta if not the country (I’ve eaten all over the south and believe me, it is not an exaggerated claim at all)! Their wadas are crispy outside and soft inside. The ghee Butter masala Dosa they make will drive you crazy, and is easily the best butter sada dosa one can have this side of town. Jyoti Vihar serves you the most piping hot food - their milk upma and the dahi vada are outstanding!  The coconut chutney is excellent. It is thick and grainy, topped with roasted urad dal. Their paper dosa’s are crispy and light on your stomach though not their strong point. One special mention here - they also serve no-onion sambhar on request, so if you don’t like onion you can always ask for their no onion sambhar.

To complete your South Indian meal, they serve some nice filter coffee as well. I would highly recommend Jyoti Vihar to all food lovers. Even if you don’t like South Indian food, try South Indian food here - you may just fall in love with South Indian cuisine.

“Open Oven – A Decent Bakery With Fair Prices”

My last visit to Camac Street introduced me to the King of bakery and desserts there called The Open Oven. They make excellent desserts at decent prices. Their cakes are fresh and delicious. It is one of the better bakeries in town.

It is a nice place with polite and courteous staff. The ambience is just like any other bakery. They serve good desserts just like their namesake in Delhi.

After I came to know about Open Oven, Kolkata, I order cakes on all occasions here. I have become a big fan of their cakes and frequently visit this place. This is by far the most pocket friendly bakery I have ever visited.

Their Chocolate truffle cake and Butterscotch cake are undoubtedly the crown jewels of this confectionary shop. The truffle cake easily melts in your mouth giving a rich heavenly taste of pure chocolate. Being a die- hard chocolate fan, it suits my palate perfectly. The texture of this cake is very smooth and the chocolate truffle cream is heavenly. A hint of bitterness in the butterscotch cake along with their amazing icing decor adds a compliment to its taste.

The other cake options available there like Black Forest Gateaux, Chocolate cake, Coffee gateaux etc, are also popular though I have not tried them yet. In the pastries section, I am a big fan of their Black forest Pastry. Their chocolate truffle tart is also good.

Their chicken quiche and chicken croissant sandwich are exceptionally good and great for tea time or later in the evening. Their paneer pattie and Lebanese roll are also fresh and well prepared.
Pretty much everything I have tried I liked. They also have pretty decent prices when compared to other bakeries.

“Excellent south Indian food at an authentic south Indian lunch home”

3.5 out of 5

Being a die-hard fan of South Indian cuisine, I have explored most of the South Indian food joints in Kolkata over the years, but Ramkrishna Mission Lunch Home at Sarat Bose Road, near Deshpriya Park has been an old haunt for many – my tryst with it began over two decades back in school. Famous among early morning walkers, and more prominently, among young early morning college bunkers, RM Lunch home has been a regular favourite for many of us and continues to serve quality south Indian food at honest prices.

Ramkrishna Mission Lunch home has been a basic eating house serving authentic South Indian food. The place is noticeably clean and hygienic. The interiors are simple with tables fitted with marble tops. While entering the building it does give you a feeling of being in a lunch home. With a calm and peaceful atmosphere this place has a homely feeling. They have polite and friendly staff with quick and courteous service.

They have a short and simple menu with fewer varieties of dosa when compared to other lavish restaurants. However, their butter masala dosa has a tantalizing aroma of being freshly baked and urges you to gorge on it without stopping. The crust was crispy and perfect. Their idlis are soft and fresh – and if I may commit some culinary Calcutta South Indian blasphemy – probably better than its cousin Jyoti Vihar on its day (yes, JV lovers - boo me now!). The medu vadas are crispy outside and soft inside. Their uttapams are also tasty and nice to eat though uttapam is not one of my favourite dishes to order. Their USP is their special chutney with the special tadka on top. It is a must try at Ramkrishna Mission Lunch House. They also serve excellent South Indian filter coffee to complete your meal.

To sum up – Good food to pamper your taste buds at pocket friendly prices. You will leave this place with a happy stomach every time.

CHINESE FOOD @ CHINA WHITES

Rating: 3 out of 5

China Whites is very popular among diners of all types - from youngsters to office goers to families- who throng the Gariahat area. The place provides a delightful break from your shopping spree. The ambience is very ordinary but friendly. The comfortable sitting arrangements and air conditioned setting provide much needed respite for those who drop in from their shopping errands.

With this thought in mind, drop in there with my big group of friends for a luncheon. For starters, ordered their chilli baby corn, chilli garlic pepper chicken and lat me kai. Their starters were definitely well prepared, especially the lat me kai. The dishes were spicy without being too overpowering to the palate.

We followed these with soups like tom yum soup, hot and sour soup and man chow soup. As side dishes, we ordered the following chicken dishes - tau si chicken, Kung pao chicken and tsing hoi chicken. The tau si dish- being a salty chicken dish -matched very well with the last spicy chicken item. To go with them, as recommended by our steward, we ordered lamb items like sliced lamb in hot garlic sauce and crispy conjee lamb. In both the dishes, the lamb pieces were very few, and this was certainly a letdown. Nevertheless, the few meat pieces that were in the dish were juicy and well seasoned. After having all of these dishes, we were still raring to go and ordered some seafood side dishes like butter garlic chilli prawn, fish chilli wine and Sichuan fish. These were followed by chicken fried rice and pan fried mixed noodles. Our luncheon was rounded off with desserts like toffee walnuts and vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate sauce.

All in all, the place is extremely popular for its convenient location and moderately priced fare.

Eat to your heart's content at Banzara!

Among the few things that can put you off about a restaurant, the most important is the price factor. When the cost of food is too high, you think twice before dining in a restaurant. Most important of all, you cannot drop in at any time with just a few hundred in your pocket. Again, most of the time you cannot afford to taste more than two to three items as ordering something extra means you burn a bigger hole in your pocket. Sometimes, you just cannot afford to eat in an overly expensive restaurant. But, when each item is reasonably priced and each preparation (veg or non-veg) tastes awesome, you are more likely to visit that restaurant again and again.

I must say that Banzara at 86, Ibrahimpur Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata, is one restaurant where you would die to eat again if you once taste their awesome Chinese and Indian food preparations. I have been there twice. Once I got to taste some of their authentic Chinese preparations, and the second time I gorged on some north Indian delicacies. Eating at Banzara was fun because both times I was accompanied by my close friends, who just loved the food here.

Among its wide range Chinese delicacies, I particularly liked their chicken drumsticks and fried prawn in garlic lime sauce as starters. Banzara makes some lip-smacking soups. Try their chicken noodle soup and shanghai soup, I'm sure you'll love both the preparations. My main course menu consisted of chilli garlic fried rice, Cantonese noodles, Korean chicken and Thai chilly pomfret, which I found scrumptious and appetizing.

On my second visit, I ordered some really delicious north Indian dishes. My three course meal consisted of kebabs ( hariali kebab, murg dhania kebab and boti kebab), Amritsari kulcha, murg biryani, chicken jhal frazie, murg massalam and palak cream. I am not embarrassed to confess that both times I licked my platter clean because the food was just awesome! Eat here once and decide for yourself.

Grab a bite or two at Calcutta Bistro!

Good food and a cosy ambience- these are the two things that any foodie looks for when he plans to dine out (Not that we are always lucky enough to enjoy this combination!). Often, customers who get to eat good food in a restaurant may not like its ambience. Remember, a restaurant can be called a foodie’s paradise only if it offers awesome food and has a nice and cosy ambience. Calcutta Bistro, located on 50A/1A, Raja S C Mullick Rd, Near Sukanta Setu, Jadavpur, Kolkata, can be regarded as one of the top-rated restaurants in Kolkata as far as food, service and ambience are concerned.

About three months back, I dropped in at Calcutta Bistro with two friends. We were voraciously hungry and were just looking for a nice and cosy place near Sukanta Setu where we could dig into lip-smacking food. We just came upon this restaurant, which is located on the main road. On entering this restaurant, we realized that cleanliness is not at all neglected here. The place was very clean and food served hygienically. Their service was actually good. As soon as we were seated comfortably, a waiter came and took our orders. I found him prompt and courteous. Within half-an-hour of placing the order, he arrived with our delicious preparations and placed steaming hot food bowls on our table.

We had some fish mofato and seasame chicken nuggets as starters and some delicious Tom Yum Soup. Only a foodie knows how it feels when the aroma of steaming hot soup tantalizes the taste buds. I must say that both the fish mofato and seasame chicken nuggets were delicious. All thanks to the chef who has mastered the tricky art of cooking to satiate the hunger of this joint’s patrons.

We also had some mutton sheek kebab which tasted awesome. Once done with our starters and soups it was time to dig into mouth watering navratan polao, prawn do piaza, badshai cashew chicken and chicken tikka butter masala ( all a part of our main course menu – yes, we are big eaters!). I must say that the food tasted delicious. Each spice was used in the right proportion to bring out the strong aroma and mouth watering taste. Calcutta Bistro also offers Chinese dishes.

Treat yourself to some awesome food at Spicy treat!

How would you feel if you suddenly found yourself in a restaurant that offers scrumptious food at nominal costs, especially at today’s prices? I would be on cloud nine, a common reaction of any foodie under the sun on a budget.  Spicy Treat is one such restaurant at 109, Baghajatin SPD Block, Raja SC Mullick Road, Jadavpur, Kolkata, where you get delicious food at very low prices. A friend of mine introduced me to its scrumptious delicacies a few months back. We were having a casual discussion on the exorbitant rates of reputed restaurants in Kolkata when she told me about this little restaurant in Baghajatin that offers really awesome food at low rates.

After getting the details from her, I decided to drop in here one day and try their preparations. I dropped in here a few months ago when I was eating out a lot (like almost every day) and I was truly satisfied with their service, ambience and food quality. I had some crispy chilli mushroom and chicken lollypop as starters and man chow soup (chicken). I just loved the awesome and appetizing starters and soups, which churned my gastronomic juices and I started craving for some main course items, which in my case consisted of Singapore noodles, Manchurian Fried rice, Hunan chicken and shredded chicken with mushroom and baby corn.

I must say the chef at Spicy Treat is quite an expert who knows how to blend the spices perfectly so you just enjoy the taste and aroma of each preparation. The best part is I think this is one of the most affordable restaurants in Kolkata. Only a very few items were above Rs.100. Most of their lip-smacking delicacies are below Rs.100. So, whenever you plan to dine out here you’ll never burn a hole in your pocket. If you are big foodie but you are into one of your cost-curtailing phases, Spicy Treat is just the right place for you to dine alone or with family and friends.

WELL PREPARED FOOD @ CRYSTAL CHIMNEY!

Crystal Chimney – in the Chandni Chowk area – is a small Chinese restaurant that serves scrumptious and quality food at moderate prices. The restaurant is not difficult to locate. The restaurant suffers from lack of space but the sitting arrangements are comfy enough for a meal there. The servers are helpful and informative. The food is served without any kind of delay.  They have an exhaustive and extensive menu. All the items in their very long menu are available. For certain dishes, they even let you know the amount of time they will require to prepare them.

Their starters (both veg and non veg) are the perfect way to start your tryst with Chinese food here. Their starters like pepper chicken and chicken lollipops can be compared to those served at high end restaurants. Even their chicken Momos (whether pan fried, fried or steamed – we tried them all!) are delectable and finger licking food delights. Among the soups, their chicken sweet corn soup and chicken hot and sour soup were well prepared and flavorful. The sweet corn soup was sweet to taste with generous amount of corn and chicken pieces. The hot and sour soup was mildly hot and well seasoned.  Their fried rice and noodle dishes make for equally well turned out fare. The quantity of rice and noodle per plate is overwhelming and are available in a variety of cooking styles like Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong style and more. These can be had with any of their meat side dishes. The house bestsellers are essentially chicken dishes like chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken, pepper chicken and so on. They are well cooked have strong flavor and are aromatic. Definitely good value for money if you are in Central Kolkata.

DELIGHTFUL TREATS FROM ORIENTAL DELIGHTS!

Oriental Delight, located at Prince Anwar Shah Road, is like its name – it serves some extremely delightful treats. Though its offerings are very limited; they are full of flavor and are quite appetizing fare. The lack of ambience and décor should not deter you from dining here. The food joint is very small and is mostly into takeaways and home delivery. Yet this restaurant is worth checking out if you want to pack home food really quick or simply to dine there for a quick bite. The owners pride themselves in delivering piping hot food to their customers. They have, however, different packaging rates which are stated in the menu.

They make some delectable and very appetizing starters. They serve both Tibetan and Chinese style Momos. Even their Sui may and wantons are scrumptious dumpling options. The chicken fried wantons are a case in point; wonderfully fried with well seasoned chicken filling. Equally mouthwatering are their fried starters like golden prawns and crispy chicken. The meat pieces (perfectly batter coated) still retain their softness and juiciness. Their noodle and fried rice dishes are properly cooked fare. Unlike other small eateries, here you won’t be encountering any kind of soggy noodle fare with regards to their gravy noodles. The quantity is plentiful especially at the rates that they are available. Their fish and chicken items as side dishes are not only stomach filling but go really well with their Hakka noodles. They however serve very few prawn items as side dishes. They make some equally flavorsome and aromatic soups. Their chicken mushroom soup and chicken lung fung soup are considered by many to be their best sellers. Overall, the place is definitely a must visit for well priced, qualitative and quantitative Chinese fare. They even offer economically priced lunch packs especially for the office crowd.

LOOKS CAN BE DECEPTIVE FOR NU WAN LI!

The outside of the restaurant might drive away potential diners but the food will definitely win hearts. The moment you enter the place you are bound to undergo a change in your perception and attitude. With regards to the food quality, this is one of the very few places that offers authentic Tangra style Chinese food. They serve up good quality food at overwhelming amounts. So, it would be in your interest to order as much as you can eat. The service is always without delay. Every dish is at your table within ten to fifteen minutes of placing the order. Dining at the restaurant is always a pleasant surprise and depends on you venturing in with an open mind.

They have two kinds of menus; while one is the chefs special, the other is the normal menu. Some of their popular and well cooked dishes from the special menu are whole fish in black bean sauce, all their clay pot items (like  clay pot chicken in Hunan sauce,  double mushroom clay pot prawn in oyster sauce and chicken in hoi sin sauce), and last but not the least, their chicken sizzler. The taste of the Hunan chicken is one of tanginess and less of spiciness. The chicken sizzler is well seasoned and the vegetables that come with it are crunchy. Other items to be had are chicken shrimp fried rice, chicken shrimp chilli garlic noodle and chicken rice noodles. The quantity of noodle served per plate is overwhelming. The noodles are well made and full of flavor, and are enough for three people! All in all, the food is light not only on the tummy but also on the wallet as well. Nu Wan Li is definitely a good pocket friendly Chinese eatery in the south Kolkata area.

ALL TIME FAVOURITE!

Mandarin Restaurant serves delicious food at overpowering quantity and sensible prices. The food is not only well prepared but scrumptious as well, though the ambience and décor is simple and plain looking. The restaurant is small and suffers from lack of space. But the stuffy and cramped space is compensated by good quantity and quality food. While four or five people can share a soup item, a plate of rice or noodle dish can feed two people. Their meat dishes, on the other hand, whether half a plate or full can be had by two to three people.

Some of their well known and well prepared dishes are mostly from their soup, fried rice and chicken sections. Their popular items are mostly the chicken dishes; more specifically, it is their Lemon Chicken, Chilli Garlic Chicken, Chilli Honey Chicken and Manchurian Chicken that are the fast moving items from the restaurant. The chicken pieces are always big and juicy. Other items to be had from here are the seafood dishes namely Golden Fried Prawn, Chilli Prawn, Chilli Fish and Sichuan Prawn and Fish. Nevertheless, they also make some pretty decent noodle dishes like their Mixed Hakka and Mixed Cantonese chow. One great thing about their meat dishes is that you can have them either dry or wet. They do give you that kind of option. Unfortunately, you cannot round off your meal at the restaurant with desserts as they do not offer that option.

They are very consistent with their food service. The service is fast and efficient and the servers are themselves very friendly and informative. Since they serve food in humongous quantities, it is best to go there with a large group of people in order to have a value for your money kind of experience.

ACCETABLE FOOD @ KRYSTAL CHOPSTICK!

Krystal Chopstick restaurant is more likeable for Indian Chinese rather than Chinese fare. The place is adequately decorated. The food quality is tolerable.  I say this because this is one restaurant in south Kolkata where the taste of the food varies from time to time.  Apart from the usual fish and prawn dishes they also serve up several squid and crab dishes. But this place is acceptable for the regular soup, noodles, and rice and chicken dishes. Though they have so many meat items, their pork, lamb and duck dishes do not have the same consistency in taste as you will find in other restaurants.

Nevertheless, items to be ordered from here can be their chicken hot and sour soup, garlic rice and spicy chicken Mongolian style. The quality and quantity of the last dish is not only good but plentiful as well. This dish besides being unique is also one of their many well made dishes. Besides the items for the main course, their starters are satisfactorily well turned out. The Chinese toast is considered by many to be their signature dish.

For starters their Momos, Wantons and Spring Rolls are satisfactorily. For the main course it will be in your interest to stick to the usual Hakka noodle, Chilli Chicken and Fried Rice. Despite the numerous negatives, the restaurant still continues to have a loyal clientele due to its moderately priced fare. The servers are very competent in their jobs. They are instantly by your side to take your order. Sometimes, the service might suffer a bit and you might require waiting a while for the food.

The food joint is, therefore, worth a visit for its acceptable food at reasonable prices. Otherwise there are many other restaurants in Kolkata that offer better Chinese food at those same prices.

CIT CAFÉ IS UNLIKE ANY CAFÉ!

The Chinese food served at this food joint is (beyond doubt) authentic and delicious. The décor is simple with comfortable sitting arrangements. It is a very small and clean food joint. Since the food is very pocket friendly, the joint is no doubt, very popular among students.

Their starters are the perfect way to start your tryst with Chinese food at the restaurant. Some of their very popular starters are Fish Mofato, Prawn Trestina and Chicken Drumsticks, even their Chicken Momos whether pan-fried, steamed or fried are scrumptious. This can be followed by side dishes like the Crispy Fish in lemon coriander sauce or Kung Pao Chicken. The side dishes can be had with their egg, prawn and chicken noodle preparation called Chingchong Noodle. Alternatively, they can also be had with either Hong Kong or Singapore fried rice. At the same time, their egg wrapped mixed rice does not have any competitors. Among the vegetable items their crispy chilli baby corn is tasty as well as not so spicy.

There is no denying the fact that the taste of the food is always the same here. The food portions are generous and each plate can feed two people. The quantity is overpowering at times. Their chicken preparations are many and delicious and whether Mongolian or Hunan or Sichuan, they are all full of flavor. Some of the popular chicken items that they serve are Lemon chicken, Hunan chicken and sautéed chicken with celery. Likewise, their noodles and Mei foon items are thin and full of flavor. For people who are sensitive to spicy dishes it is best to let the servers know beforehand about your spice limits.

The biggest negative of this eatery is the time they take to serve or deliver your food – service is downright appalling sometimes. Nevertheless, the place is popular for its good food, convenient location and moderate prices.

‘BLISSFUL’ FOOD AT AFFORDABLE PRICES!

Among the many Chinese restaurants located near Hindustan Park, Bliss ranks high on the popularity chart. It doles out authentic and tasty Chinese delicacies. The food is not only tasty but very hot and spicy as well. Since their Chinese fare is moderately priced it is very good for students with a low budget. There is nothing extraordinary with regards to the ambience and décor of the place.

They serve some of the best Chinese starters especially their chicken items like Chicken Momos (both steamed and fried), Red Pepper Chicken, Chilli Chicken, and Chicken Drumstick and so on. Their starters can be followed by their equally well made soup dishes like Chicken Coriander Soup, Chicken Hot and Sour Soup and Chicken Mushroom Soup. Mixed Fried Rice and Mixed Hakka Noodles are also brilliant in terms of quantity and flavor. Their Momos are so scrumptious and of adequate sizes that you immediately feel full having just them. For this reason most of the time, their Momos are sold out well before dinner. Their vegetarian items can be considered as any foodie’s delights. They have on offer items like Hot Garlic Mushroom, Chilli Paneer, Paneer pakora and many more. Besides the usual Chilli Baby corn, they also make very tasty Red Pepper Baby corn and Hot Garlic Baby corn. Some of the fish items I like are Chilli Fish, Red Pepper Fish and Hot Garlic Fish. Their prawn dishes (be it Red Pepper Prawn or Hot Garlic Prawn or Sichuan Prawn) are also worth devouring too.

They, however, do not offer any kind of pork or lamb dishes. the service is prompt and efficient. The staff is always helpful and courteous. Bliss is unarguably one of the best Chinese restaurants in the south Kolkata area. A must visit place for inexpensive, simple but delicious Chinese fare.

TASTY FOOD AT POCKET FRIENDLY PRICES!

If you are looking for affordable and decent Chinese food then head straight to Kimli. It situated in a lane near Hindustan Park. Prices are low but portions are huge. The setting is very oriental in the use of colour schemes and paper lanterns. This only adds to the charm of the restaurant.

The restaurant is famous for its duck preparations. The famous Chilli Duck dish really packs a punch. It is a well prepared dish. The meat is always luscious and tender and goes well with their noodles especially the Thai noodles. The tartness of the noodles complements the flavours of the duck meat. Since duck preparations are their specialty, do not miss their Teriyaki Duck. It is served in a delicious looking and tasty red teriyaki gravy. Other items to be had here are their Red Pepper Chilli Garlic Prawn and Golden Chicken. They make some of the spiciest schezwan dishes and are therefore not meant for the faint hearted!

Unlike many Chinese eateries that serve similar tasting gravy items; at Kimli the gravy does not seem to overpower the flavours of the meat or seafood pieces that are served with gravy. The right choice of sauces can also make or break a restaurant. With Kimli, the establishment has ticked all the right boxes. They serve two kinds of chutney - fiery sweet and tart green chutney and tomato-garlic chutney. The last chutney adds the required sweetness to any schezwan dishes.

Despite their space crunch, the service is always prompt and efficient. The servers are friendly and well mannered. They are also eveready to tweak their dishes to suit the diner’s needs. Like many of the Chinese eateries in Kolkata, they do not serve pork, which was a bit of a letdown for me.

GOOD, GENEROUS FOOD AT NIRALA’S!

In the Gariahat area, Nirala’s China Town is considered to be one of the oldest Chinese food joints. Though it suffers from a space crunch, it does offer comfortable sitting arrangements. Furthermore, dim lighting adds to the old world charm of the restaurant.

All the items mentioned in the menu card are available. The food service is quick and efficient. Fresh and hot food is served within ten to fifteen minutes. The food quantity of each plate is of generous amounts. One plate of any rice or noodle dish can satisfy two to three people. No matter how many times you dine there the food standard is pretty much the same. Though all the dishes are well prepared and scrumptious, each section has some food items that are more popular than the others. Among the varied soups on offer it is aromatic and flavorful Thai soup and Chicken Hot and Sour soup, which are crowd favorites. For the main course, both their fried rice and noodles (Hakka or gravy) were well cooked. You can have them made in the varied cooking styles that they specialize in. Among the chicken items we ordered their Hong Kong chicken, Chicken Drumsticks, Green Chilli Chicken and Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce - the crowd pullers. From their seafood section, I would prefer their prawn dishes than their fish ones. Some popular prawn dishes are Thai Hot Garlic Prawn, Chilli Garlic Prawn and Red Chilli Prawn and go well with all kinds of fried rice. They also serve several lamb, crab and pork dishes though we did not try any. They do churn out several mean pork dishes like Crispy Chilli Garlic Pork and Thai Hot Garlic Pork.

This is a great place for good quality and generous quantity food at reasonable prices. So whenever you go shopping in the Gariahat area and are looking for a wholesome meal experience head straight to Nirala’s.

Drop in at South City Mall, Prince Anwar Shah Road, Kolkata and step on to the escalator which will take you to the 3rd floor of the mall, the food court.  Here you will find this food joint, always thronged with foodies who wait in a queue to take away their food trays. The tantalizing aroma of Chinese cuisine will make you forget all the other food stalls here.

The gentleman who runs this stall and takes your order, is a friendly and jovial fellow. If there is any special item for the day he’ll surely recommend you to have some. Whenever I am in South City Mall, I prefer tasting some of their tasty preparations. Republic of China/ Wok Crispy is quite an affordable food joint (a proper meal for two costs Rs. 500). I like both their vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian dishes. If I plan to go in for their veg meals, I have crispy chilli baby corn as my starter and veg hot & sour soup. My main course often comprises of schezuan noodles, paneer chilli and mixed vegetables in hot garlic. However, I must say that I seldom opt for veg meals as I am strictly non-vegetarian. Most of the times, my three course meal consists of crispy shredded chicken and chicken spring roll as starters and hot & sour chicken soup. Their chicken Hakka noodles, schezuan chicken and chilli chicken are my hot favourites. If you want you can also opt for their non-veg combo meal. By paying a little extra, you can get your favourite 'add on' (egg, chicken, prawn and mixed meal).

Yes, the seating arrangements on the 3rd floor are a real problem. But, if you can find a comfortable chair and table for yourself then try their authentic Chinese dishes.

Get transported into the world of food while dining at Marco Polo!

The pleasure of eating increases manifold when food is served in style and when your demands are fulfilled at the drop of a hat. Well, I must say that such a place exists here in the heart of Kolkata at 205, Sarat Bose Road. The restaurant building is artfully constructed and on entering the premises you will be impressed by the artful décor and fabulous ambience.  The waiters are friendly and professional and are prompt in taking your orders and bringing steaming food to your table.

A few months back, I got a chance to dine at Marco Polo. We were a group of few friends, hanging out near Deshapriya Park and Marco Polo was obviously our first choice. On entering the restaurant, we were cordially greeted by the manager and a waiter showed us our table. A few people were already having their dinner, and although they were eating silently or murmuring occasionally, we could make out from their expressions and sighs that they were satisfied with the food. Marco Polo is a multi-cuisine restaurant and offers both continental as well as north Indian dishes. We decided to opt for authentic north Indian cuisine. (Marco Polo is quite an expensive restaurant. So, if you plan to dine out at Marco Polo make sure you carry a good amount of money. A three course meal could amount to Rs. 1200 per person!).

We ordered some Pork ribs and chicken kebabs as appetizers. Both these items tasted delicious. The kebabs were soft and yummy and the chutney was lip-smacking. Our main course consisted of chicken biryani, Murgh makhanwala and Murgh hara dhania. If you are a connoisseur of good food, then Marco Polo is the right place for you. Each item was just so tasty! The spices and herbs were used in right proportions to bring out the taste and tantalizing aroma. Yes eating out here can be pocket pinching for many, but for those who can afford it, I must say that it is a food lover’s paradise.

Lip-smacking Mexican bites at Hotwich/Mr. Potato!

If you want to dig into authentic nachos and quesadillas, just find your way to Hotwich/Mr. Potato. Located on the 3rd floor of South City Mall, Hotwich/Mr. Potato is a popular food joint that serves yummy Mexican bites and delectable snacks. What makes this place popular is its affordability. You can get mouth watering nachos and quesadillas at reasonable rates. What’s more, if you are hungry you can dig into their delicious burgers and wraps to satiate your hunger. Last month, I was dying to try some delicious Mexican food. I was hanging out with my friends at South City Mall and decided to try some Mexican delights at Hotwich/Mr. Potato.

The person who manages this food outlet is quite friendly and jovial. He took our orders and promptly served us hot and fresh food. We ordered for some Tomato salsa nachos and chicken quesadillas. For those who do not have no idea about Mexican cuisine, let me throw some light on this matter. Nachos are a lip smacking snack that is immensely popular in Mexico. It is a preparation of crispy corn tortilla chips dipped or served with cheese sauce and jalapeno peppers. You can opt for a variety of toppings for nachos like olives, lettuce, tomatoes, beans, etc. Quesadillas, on the other hand, are toasted Mexican tortillas stuffed with varied types of ingredients (vegetables or chicken) and melted cheese. Wholesome and nourishing, nachos and quesadillas are just what you want when you are ravenously hungry.

At Hotwich/Mr. Potato you can get to eat some really delicious masala potato wedges, burgers and sandwiches. Vegetarians can opt for a roast vegetable sub and paneer tikka roomali wrap which are wholesome and delectable. Apart from nachos and quesadillas, we had some chicken chilli cheese toast, super double decker and malai tikka in Pita. We actually liked the fusion-style cooking and unique taste of each item at Hotwich/Mr. Potato. I found that Hotwich/Mr. Potato was the ideal place to enjoy Mexican- Indian bites in South Kolkata.

Gorge on some tasty munchies and sweets at Tasty Corner!

Those who are raking their brains to find out where this food joint is located, let me help you out – it’s on 18, Anil Moitra Road, Mandeville Gardens, Kolkata. It is not surprising at all that a very few people know about this outlet. But Pathak Bhavan students and South Pointers are mad about this place. Why? Well, just try their samosas, kachoris, gulab jamuns and jalebis and you’ll know why.  My courtship days were filled with regular visits to Tasty Corner.

What makes Tasty Corner different from any ordinary sweet shop is its food quality. Whether it’s their hing kachori, khasta kachori, matar kachori or paneer kachori- all the items are immensely popular (though REALLY oily). My favourite was their hing kachori which was served with a delicious sabzi (vegetable curry) and sweet chutney. There are three varieties of curry you can have with your kachori - allu matar sabji, aludam or chollar dal. I always used to have my kachoris with allu matar. Apart from kachori, Tasty Corner offers some mouth watering samosas, dhokla and dahi vadas, which are students’ favourites.

I have a sweet tooth, so I never failed to try some of their luscious sweets. Their gajar ka halwa, moti pak, kalakand and gulab jamun are my all time favourite. Even now whenever I get time, I make sure I drop in at Tasty Corner to try their lip-smacking sweets and savouries.  Unlike other sweet shops, where you often get to eat stale sweets and savouries, people at Tasty Corner like to serve fresh munchies and sweets to their customers (something I really appreciate as a foodie). Fresh food is prepared every day since leftovers are served to beggars and needy people at the end of the day. Their policy is never to serve leftovers of the previous day to their customers, and that is what makes Tasty Corner a reputed sweet shop in the Ballygunge area (and in my book).
