Get 5-star food at road side Anamika Roll Center

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

A good friend of mine stays at New Alipur and hence I have explored a number of food joints in this area. So this time we went to Anamika Roll Center. Situated at Triangular Park adjacent to Azad Hind Dhaba, this is a road side food joint that sells a variety of rolls. Previously, it owned two stalls, one for rolls and the other for Chinese, but for some reason they have shut down the Chinese one and are only running the roll center.

I have had the pleasure of trying both their rolls and Chinese and believe me, their Chinese used to be pretty good. I have seen people drop in here driving their cars from distant places like EM Bypass, Ultadanga etc. a number of times to eat Chinese food and rolls here.

Though it is a road side small eating hub, this food joint attracts diners from local as well as distant areas because they never compromise with quality I guess. They don’t make any of their preparations too oily, and their hygienic way of preparing food (for a roadside stall!) is a big plus for this place; something rarely found in other road side eateries.

As Chinese is not available any more I better move on to their brilliant and wholesome rolls that are also the main money spinners for the owners. Imagine – with a neighbor like Azad Hind, Anamika’s is still doing very brisk business! The rolls offered here are delicious to taste. The thin paratha of the roll (fried in very less oil may I add) is really the unique thing here that you won’t find elsewhere, and this is the reason why people throng to this place instead of its neighbors. Moreover, the marinating process of the chicken, mutton or paneer pieces is really unique and you won’t need a microscope to find pieces in your roll. There is a generous portion of chicken, mutton and paneer pieces in the rolls.

Being a vegetarian, my friend always gives a thumbs up to their Onion roll though I haven’t tasted it yet. I love to gorge on their double egg double chicken or mutton rolls. The meat pieces are so succulent and soft that your taste buds will be more than pacified. Moreover, due to the double filling, one tends to relish the meat pieces more. I have also tried these rolls with potato stuffing and they are also good. The mashed potato prepared with spices gives a real treat to the taste buds. I just hope that they open the Chinese counter once again.

Note: Avoid weekends because the place is overcrowded and if you are there at the wrong time, you may find that there is nothing left to order. They are open generally from 4-9 PM but on weekdays, you will find the stall open till 9.30-10 PM. Car parking is not a problem here.

Dig in to Brewberrys’ Sizzling Brownies!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Today, I am really happy to review a nice café which is close to my place but one I had never visited before or noticed earlier. I am talking about Brewberrys located close to Elgin Road, near Northern Park. This is the only problem with this place - its location. If you are not very familiar with the area, it is quite difficult to find this place and that probably why I never visited this wonderful cafeteria earlier.

Brewberrys is a typical vegetarian cafeteria with the interior décor and ambience resembling a western café. A guitar hangs on the wall, a book case displays a number of books on various topics you can read here, there are animated paintings on the wall; overall, the ambience is cool and goes well with a café. Like other modern cafes, there are a lot of options to try, among which I went in for a Hazelnut Shake and Sizzling Brownie with vanilla ice cream topping dipped in choco sauce (the topping idea was given by the staff), whereas my friend (who loves spicy treats) went in for a Mexican Burger along with The Dark Horse Mojito. Among these 4 items, the Sizzling Brownie was the most tempting and will surely leave you asking for more - creamy and yummy to taste. The super soft hot brownies are arranged in pieces one on top of the other topped by a scoop of vanilla dipped in a generous helping of dark brown choco sauce – can’t really go wrong here.

It was good enough to influence my friend to order one more. The drinks, the hazelnut shake and mojito were also very refreshing. The burger was also tasty, especially the homogeneous distribution of jalapenos and salsa added real flavor to this big bite snack. I will soon be back to taste some other items but my obvious favourite here is their Sizzling Brownie with ice-cream.

Forgot to mention one thing - the rates. The rates are very pocket friendly and relatively cheaper when compared to many other cafés that have cropped out in recent years across the city.

Relish foods on green banana leaves at Banana Leaf

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

If you are a die-hard fan of South Indian delicacies then Banana Leaf is a must visit place for you. Situated on Rashbehari Avenue behind Vindhyas, Banana Leaf is a perfect choice for trying authentic South Indian delicacies. Contrary to their simple get up, their culinary art is really impressive. After tasting South Indian preparations in many food joints in Kolkata, I am bound to give Banana Leaf a high rating because of their superbly prepared dosas, idlis, upma and a lot of other South Indian dishes.

Service is also quite prompt and you will never feel disappointed or see your chutney and samber bowls empty because someone will fill your add-on bowls from time to time even before you call for it. To start with their culinary skills, any item you order is served on clean and fresh green banana leaves over a plate. This typical South Indian way of representation is really very alluring if you want a traditional south Indian culinary experience.

The dosas and vadas are very crisp and soft. Idlis are also very soft. Now, we all know that dosa-idli-vada are some common South Indian dishes that almost all South Indian eateries serve, but if you want to go beyond this, Banana Leaf is the right place. There is hardly any other restaurant that offers such a wide variety of South Indian delicacies. Paniyarams, Puttu, Idiyappam, etc. are some excellent preparations here along with their special thali and varieties of rice preparations. The thali consists of so many items that it is more than enough for a person. Another important thing about their chutney or rasam is that it is always fresh and they never serve old chutney that leaves an excessive sour taste on your palate. In addition, their prices are nominal as well.

Theque The Foodwala

Rating: 3 out of 5

If you want to have Chinese food from a restaurant in Santoshpur, look no further than Theque The Foodwala. This place is recommended only for takeaway - they don’t offer a dine-in option. Acting on one of my friend’s recommendations, I went there and parcelled some items. The service was quick and everything was ready without having to wait for too long. The food is reasonably priced. The quantity and quality of their preparations are not to be doubted.

Soups like chicken Thai soup, chicken and hot and sour soup were well seasoned and bursting with flavour. The same though cannot be said for their sweet corn soup, which I feel requires more seasoning.

The Tibetan chicken momos (steamed) make a complete wholesome meal. Other starters that might tickle your taste buds and which you should not miss are crispy chicken, golden fried prawns and chicken gold coin. The crispness of the meat pieces will certainly impress you along with their succulent and juicy flesh.  The money that you spend on their side dishes is worthwhile. Chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken and Sichuan prawn are dishes that they seem to prepare well.
Staples like fried rice, Hakka chow and Mei foon should be the norm here. They do not leave a heavy feeling in your stomach and are wonderful non-oily options.

They also offer both veg and non veg combo meals at affordable rates. The quality and quantity of such meals should leave you full.

Gorge in to the super spicy delicacies at Halum’s

Rating: 3 out of 5

A small food joint which is not too well known but is immensely popular among JU students and locals, Halum’s serves some super spicy and delicious Chinese and Indian cuisine at pocket-friendly rates. Situated on North Road in Jadavpur, I have seen diners really gorge into some exotic food ‘halum-halum’ style.

It is a little eatery with a very simple ambience and limited seating arrangements – it’s better to call this a takeaway joint. It’s such a small restaurant but has a wide variety of options to satiate individual needs of different types of diners. Their Chicken Tandoori and Kababs are good and are prepared in a unique style with the use of various types of herbs and spices. Of the types we tried, the reshmi malai kabab and Afghani kabab were the best. The chickens in the kababs were so soft and juicy and cooked to perfection.

Another item that I loved here when I last ate here was their Szechwan Noodles. Very tasty (and VERY spicy!), my experience at Halum’s has always been good, though I recently heard that this food joint has temporarily shut down… best to call ahead before trying it out.

Little Tangra truly goes with its name

Rating: 3 out of 5

When you are about to write a restaurant review, the primary thing that I like to focus on is the quality and quantity of food served. Service, ambience and rates are also important but it is the food that clinches it for me. If a restaurant achieves its primary goal flawlessly then one needs to consider it a highly rated restaurant and give it due credit. The same goes with Little Tangra, which is relatively a small food joint located on Raja Subodh Chandra Mullick Road at Garia. I walked into this place purely by accident.

Little Tangra is a restaurant in the true sense as it never compromises with its food quality, no matter how much it lags in ambience compared to other eating hubs near it. There is nothing much to talk about its ambience (hence the 3 out of 5 rating) because although this food joint provides dine-in options the seating arrangements are very poor. The only good thing about its ambience is that the place is clean and maintains basic hygiene. I would suggest – opt for take-away.

Now, if anyone considers this a huge drawback they will surely miss a great chance to pacify their taste buds with some awesome Chinese preparations. I did this the first time I was there, but when I tasted their preparations, my notion about this place changed and I have now become a die-hard fan of this restaurant. The credit for this goes to the chef of this simple restaurant. Many top rated Chinese restaurants will come up short when it comes to food when compared this relative less popular and small food joint.

Try their Szechwan Fried Rice (chicken or veg) with Hunan Chicken; you will fall in love with this combination. Some other delectable preparations include Roasted Chilli Chicken, Fish Manchurian, Golden Fried Prawn, Chicken in Black Bean Sauce and Singapore Rice Noodles. Apart from experiencing top class culinary art, you won’t mind paying the meagre amounts they charge. Try some take-away from Little Tangra for some nice authentic Chinese!

Blue Sky Café serves everything you need

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

After managing the huge crowd of New Market, whenever I feel the need for some real refreshment, only Blue Sky Café comes to mind. Located in Sudder Street, this café is something more than a normal restaurant as it offers a lot of options on its menu, from Chinese to Indian, Continental, Italian as well as light snacks, desserts and beverages. Compared to its small size and off-beat location, the menu is quite lengthy and the food is good.

Whenever you step into this café cum restaurant, you will come across a lot of foreigner diners; sometimes you will find you’re the only Indian among the other diners (barring the staff and your companions). This is a common scenario here. Coming to the ambience, there is nothing extraordinary to talk about. The tables and chairs are arranged in rows so this small food joint can accommodate a larger number of diners. So, if you are planning a private lunch or dinner with your date, you’d better avoid this place because you may have to sit beside a stranger to have your meal here as this place is always full.

Service is very fast and effective, with a homely touch to their service. To start with, the food is really good. I haven’t tasted many of their main course dishes, although I have been there many times. So far, we’ve ordered Chicken Momo (in all the three forms), Pan Fried Chilli Chicken, Barcetta Pizza, Penne Grilled Chicken Salad, Tandoori chicken and chicken reshmi and tikka kabab. Every item on that list was really wonderful and Blue Sky Café demands repeat visits. I have realized that this place is really the “Jack of all Trades”. In addition, when it comes to paying the bill, you will never have to worry as their prices are really on the lower end. This place deserves a better rating than its peers as Blue Sky Café can always tantalize your taste buds with its delightful preparations.

Must Go to Yogo!

Rating: 3 out of 5

For a long time I have been planning to get some flavoured yoghurt – I almost never get to eat frozen dessert and avoid them as I am very prone to catching a cold.  I got this opportunity yesterday when I was on my way home from B.K. Market. I stepped into Yogo, which has recently opened at Nilamber Building on Shakespeare Sarani. I have visited Yoforia on Loudon Street a couple of times but had not eaten at Yogo yet.

The interiors are bright and quite appealing for a dessert store like this but the place is definitely not spacious. Though the place claims to provide a dine-in option, it is practically not possible to accommodate more than a few people here. However, when you are in a store like this, it is better to ignore such minor issues and concentrate on wares displayed here with a wide range of tempting toppings. I was unsure about what to choose for my frozen yoghurt (along with toppings) and was amazed at their service. The person at the counter was so helpful that he guided me through every step to get my order placed. 10 different flavors of yoghurt are available - I tried their vanilla. Various other fruity flavors are available; however, the most interesting thing is that whichever flavor you choose, you have to pay only 65p/gram, which is quite impressive considering the prices charged by many of its competitors.

Now, coming to the toppings, the range is vast with over 30 options, from which I chose kiwi, raspberry, blackberry, cherry, almonds, raisins and Oreo. The froyo creation was a marvelous treat for my eyes and sweet tooth as well. The real fruits mixed with this frozen dairy product are a real treat for your taste buds. This is a delightful value-for-money dessert place that gives real joy to your mind and soul.

Fillers - Really fills the stomach!

Rating: 3 out of 5

A popular joint among teenagers, Fillers is located on Jatin Bagchi Lane in Southern Avenue, near Vivekananda Park. This place always remains crowded, especially in the afternoon and mainly includes young couples from Rabindra Sarobar, the lakes and young cricketers or footballers from Vivekananda park (or other sports club there). A little food joint with (mainly) takeaway service, it also has very basic dine-in service available on the footpath, so it is better not to sit-n-dine here.

When I used to eat here a long time back, I loved the Submarine sandwiches and hot dogs because of their super yummy taste. Recently, I was in that area for some office work and felt like visiting this place after many years. As I walked in, I felt the same atmosphere I used to feel years back - it was nostalgic. No change in ambience – it was absolutely the same, with a few minor additions in the menu which were good.

This time, I stepped out of my shell and instead of ordering a hot dog or sandwich I opted for some paw bhaji along with nimbu pani-soda. Both were good. The paw bhaji was made very nicely, maintaining a perfect balance in its ingredients to bring out a lovely taste without being too spicy. The place maintains decent standards and prices are absolutely pocket-friendly. Their service was quick as always.

Get wholesome food @Foods

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Whenever an average restaurant enjoys the benefit of a prime location, business runs soundly. This is what has happened with Foods, located just opposite Padmasree Cinema in Garia on the main road. Movie viewers at Padmasree Cinema are primary customers at Foods and on weekends, this small take-away center does brisk business.

Offering both Chinese and North Indian delicacies, Foods provide wholesome meal at very reasonable rates – a site common in this part of town. With no seating arrangements (barring a few plastic stools placed on the footpath – not a capital proposition), hot selling items here include momo’s, fish fry, fish kabiraji and chicken pakora. Generally sold in the evening, their fish fry and fish kabiraj are really worth mentioning. Be there after 8 PM and you will be told that these items are all sold out.

Unlike their fish fry or kabiraji, the momos lack in heavy chicken stuffing. For my main, I tried the Chicken Biriyani accompanied with Chicken Butter Masala and Chicken Bharta. The biriyani was well prepared but the chicken preparations were too oily. However, both the chicken preparations had a generous dose of chicken in them. The only thing that is needed is to make the food here less oily.

The service is quite prompt and the rates are budget-friendly. So, with a bit of tweaking, this place could become more popular among its customers.

No Alladin’s magic in the cuisine at Chef Alladin

Rating: 0.5 out of 5

The name is quite appealing but the food is not appealing enough to go with the name of the restaurant. Located at Garia Station Road near 45B Bus Stand, Chef Alladin is a small takeaway joint with two tables and a few chairs placed on the sidewalk to provide basic dine-in. Eating on the road can be very annoying but one can ignore this if a restaurant serves you really mouthwatering food. But after tasting their food once, you won’t feel like returning here again.

I had the displeasure of being there few weeks back, and I was very unsatisfied with their overall service. They serve both Chinese and North Indian platter but cannot prepare either of these properly. I ordered a Chicken Roll while they were preparing my takeaway order. Firstly, the roll was too oily with very little chicken and lots of onions and sauce; left me wondering if I’d ordered an onion roll!

For takeaway, I ordered Murgh Biriyani, Veg Hakka Chow and Chicken Hakka Chow along with Chicken Bharta and Chilli Fish. None of the items in my list were up to the mark; in fact, much below average. Next - the Chinese preparations were very oily and were not prepared properly. In addition, they did not have any Chinese flavor in them and were absolutely tasteless. Oiliness is a huge problem in any item made here. The same goes for their Biriyani and Chicken Bharta. The biriyani was edible but not too great, and the Bharta was swimming in oil and not well prepared at all! Overall, the food was very badly prepared and very unhygienic as well as oily.

Despite my terrible experience, I saw this place overcrowded. Don’t know how or why - but I guess it’s good for the owner. I am never going back though!

Decent fast food at Campari

Rating: 3 out of 5

I have visited Campari many times and they haven’t changed their quality and quantity over the years. For me, Campari is a place with a lot of nostalgia. Situated on Rashbehari Avenue, Campari is a little food joint with very little dine-in space that serves really tasty food. Though there is nothing catchy about its ambience and it has very little space to accommodate diners, this eating hub remains overcrowded with diners every day. By very little dine-in space, I mean a few plastic stools and chairs to sit on with no tables (hence the lower rating)!

Apart from locals, shopaholic Gariahat hoppers die to get a bite of the rolls or cutlets served here. The magic of their Spl. Chicken or Mutton Rolls will have you ordering another. Chicken pieces mixed with various spices and lemon juice to bring out a heavenly taste – if you like roadside food, you will enjoy their rolls. Moreover, their paranthas are prepared very nicely without the use of excessive oil. There is a lady at the cash counter who always smiles at you. The rates are very moderate compared to the awesome taste. Their Chicken cutlet and Fish fry are also good.

Do visit Campari but remember to be there by 8 PM because after that they start running out of food due to high demand.

Real Indian flavor at Indian Spice

Rating: 4 out of 5

Step in, manage a table by a window and the rest will automatically flow brilliantly! This one statement is enough to describe a place like Indian Spice. Nestled in one of the busy commercial areas in Jaipur at JLN Marg, Indian Spice is located on the 1st floor at UDB Corporate Towers with a corporate tinge in its entire interior décor. We reached there around 9 PM to have our dinner. Even though all four of us are not dramatically fond of veg preparations, when it comes to Rajasthani culinary art, we were all happy to compromise with our die-hard non veg taste buds and chose this destination to satiate our taste buds once again with the finest Rajasthani veg dishes one could have in Jaipur.

During our stay in Rajasthan, we had been to a number of veg restaurants but Indian Spice is probably the best among all of them in all respects - ambience, food and service. We parked our hired car in the valet parking area of the building and went to the first floor. The walls are designed in a sophisticated traditional art décor style with broken tiles. The tables and chairs are also quite simple but classy and stylish to look at. The walls are decorated with detailed Rajasthani paintings to showcase the rich heritage of the state along with simple yet elegant lamps that drop down from the ceiling, giving this place a romantic tone. On one side, tables are arranged along large windows, which is the best place to sit and dine here if you want to enjoy the beauty of the city. We took a corner seat by the window to get the glimpse of the city at night while relishing some superb Rajasthani delicacies.

We directly moved into main course which included Chhena Roti, Stuffed Kulcha, Hyderabadi Biriyani, Jodhpuri Chakki and Marwari Gatta. To accompany the Biriyani, we ordered Veg Raita. Every item was so delicious and prepared with such expert hands that you will literally lick your fingers till all the food is gone!

Unique and lovely, Jodhpuri Chakki is prepared with wheat gluten. Gatta is again my favourite among the Rajasthani preparations of this area. We spent some quality time there, relishing their superb preparations while enjoying the cityscape. The service is also really good – worthy of a 5-star rating. Whether you need them or not, the staff is always there to serve you better. Well skilled and active, they know how to treat guests, especially tourists, in a place like Jaipur that attracts people from all across the globe. Once you are there, everything is top class. After experiencing such royal treatment, the amount we spent seemed well worth it.

Relish Bangladeshi cuisine @ Padmaparer Rannaghar

Rating: 3 out of 5

Some restaurant names really beckon you strongly and Padmaparer Rannaghar is one of them in South Kolkata. Situated in Gariahat, the entrance of the restaurant is really very annoying - it barely looks like a proper food joint because of the roadside clothing stalls in front of its entrance. One will really have to look to find signage with the name of the restaurant on it. It’s probably because of this annoyance that this food joint has not yet gained a lot of popularity among foodies, despite of their quality service.

I have crossed this place several times while shopping in Gariahat but never got the opportunity to check it out. Finally last month, I managed to go there with one of my colleagues. There are many renowned eateries in Kolkata that offer authentic Bengali cuisine and I can’t place Padmaparer Rannaghar in the same category. Due to its ambience, this place falls far behind when compared to places like Oh! Calcutta, Aaheli, Tero Parbon, etc. But when it comes to the quality of food served here, Padmaparer Rannaghar stands out due to its real Bangladeshi style of cooking with its spicy curries, typical of O PAR BANGLA (East Bengal). We ordered white rice and misti pulao (sweet rice) with mochar chingri, Barishaler illish jhol and illish paturi. Along with these, we had aamer sharbot. The fish preparations were truly outstanding with a perfect blend of spices and chillies to balance the preparation perfectly with spices without making them too hot to relish.

Now, my third method of comparison - the prices; extremely reasonable compared to other Bengali cuisine eateries, especially as they offer really very good quality as well as quantity of food. Overall, this place surely calls for a high rating and popularity but lacks any form of ambience simply because of its appalling entrance and non-existent decor.

Tide your hunger over with Hungry Tide

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

It is not always possible to drop in to a high rated restaurant to appease your appetite with some scrumptious food all the time. Sometimes, you need to satisfy your hunger at decent restaurants that please your heart and soul while providing you a superb meal without burning a hole in your pocket. Hungry Tide at Gariahat near Hindustan Park is one such restaurant that will give your appetite a grand treat when you are running short on money.

To be honest, I basically love to explore such average food joints in our city that offer customers a wide variety of choices without overcharging them. A very small food joint, with absolutely no dine-in options available except a few stools to sit on, this place offers a variety of Chinese and continental options at very reasonable prices.

As it is such a small space, there is hardly anything to talk about its ambience but the place is clean. In the starters section, I have always tried their crab cakes and chilli sausages. Though it is a small food joint, they really know how to satisfy their customers with delicious preparations and that too in sufficient quantities. The sausages are so succulent and soft (along with the tint of hotness of the chillies) that you go with the flow. Chicken Stroganoff is another item that is a must try at this place, and is served with a yummy and creamy sauce along with a small quantity of herb rice. Their momos were quite good too.

If you are there for light refreshments, you can always gorge into their salads or sandwiches because both are really nice and prepared with loads of yummy add-ons like cheese or mayonnaise.

Do not look at Chung Wah – No matter how hungry you are!

Rating: 0.5 out of 5

It really hurts you when an old favorite starts deteriorating day by day in all respects and becomes a dreadful place for you to visit. Now, as I sit down to write about this place, it is difficult to find the appropriate words, as Chung Wah restaurant in Chadni Chowk was once one of the popular Chinese restaurants in Kolkata, though now it is truly a horrible place to visit!
The last time I was there nearly three years back, the place was average at best but this time, it was a horrible experience for me. Last Saturday, I went there with a few friends and was so shocked to enter the place. How badly the décor and ambience has deteriorated. There was no one to welcome us, all the waiters were busy gossiping and laughing.
We seated ourselves and asked for the menu. This time, they showed some activity and handed us a menu quickly. We ordered Chicken Chow (Gravy) and Chicken Chow (Hakka) along with Chilli Chicken and Manchurian Chicken. After placing our order, we had to wait for over 20 minutes to get our orders served on the table despite no real traffic. Chicken Chow (Gravy) from Chung Wah restaurant once used to be a heavenly preparation; so I ordered it thinking that it will bring back some good culinary memories (on my recommendation, one of my friends also did the same), but the gravy chow they served us was a fry cry from the one that Chung Wah used to serve earlier. I was embarrassed in front of my friends a wee bit as I had suggested we go there for lunch. The Hakka chow was barely edible, while the chilli chicken and Manchurian were truly appalling with very little chicken and too much stuffing. To make matters worse, they didn’t even taste like Chinese preparations!
I wonder how a once-reputed Chinese joint like this can prepare such poor Chinese preparations (sorry, I cant even describe them as Chinese preparations!). The staff has absolutely no manners and seriously need to learn some etiquette. The place rubs you on the wrong side in every respect. Its only advantage is perhaps its location which is the only explanation why such a horrible restaurant is still running.

True experience of Bengali food and culture at Tero Parbon

Rating: 4 out of 5

A few weeks back, at a weekend outing, we dropped in to Tero Parbon, situated at Purna Das Road near Hindustan Park. We don’t frequent restaurants that serve Bengali cuisine very often but try to visit different places every time to get a different feel.

Yes, they serve the same preparations as other restaurants in the city, but taste and other culinary factors (including the visual representation of each dish) vary a lot, and to experience such wonderful culinary art, one must visit restaurants like Tero Parbon to experience Bengali culture and food more intricately.

As we entered the place, the ambience really vibed with me. The place was so simple yet so wonderful, delivering a homely feel.  The interior décor and arrangement of dining tables and chairs resemble a Bengali house where all the family members of a large joint family would sit together at least once a day to have their meal. Everything here was so homely that not once did I feel that I was sitting in a restaurant.

Their service was quite fast and helpful. Now let’s talk about the food! There’s only one word I would use to describe all their preparations - ‘Excellent!’ Like with usual Bengali thalis, we started with white rice, shukto, echorer dalna, koraisuti dhokar dalna and mochar ghonto. With Bengali thalis, these items generally serve as appetizers. These were followed by macher moong dal with hanser dimer devil (for non-vegeterians) and cholar dal with mochar chop (for vegetarians).

With Bengali food, the dal appears as an intermediate item between appetizers and the main course. In true Bengali culinary tradition, our main course included daab chingri, bhetki gondhoraj, ilish macher paturi, kakrar jhal, and chanar kalia (for vegeterians). This huge lunch party finally came to an end with aamer chutney, rabri and malpua as a grand Bengali thali can never come to an end without misthi (dessert).

Every one of us relished each of their items. Even if you don’t try the other dishes, order their koraisuti dhokar dalna, mochar ghonto and bhetki gondhoraj. You will surely love them. And when it comes to paying the bill, you will be equally pleased as it is very well priced as well. Overall, Tero Parbon won my heart and I want to come back here again.

For non-Bengalis who want to stimulate their taste buds with the real flavors of Bengali cuisine, I give a big thumbs up to Tero Parbon!

Get some true refreshment at Tapri

Rating: 3 out of 5

Wherever you go, light refreshments in the afternoon are always desirable. So while hopping around from one tourist spot to other throughout the day in Jaipur, we were so tired that we were dying for some refreshments and that was when we came across Tapri where we stopped to enjoy our ‘chai-break’. Situated at Lal Kothi on Tonk Road, Tapri is a beautiful cafeteria with both indoor as well as outdoor seating arrangements.

Though outdoor seating in cafeterias always attracts me, this time, we preferred indoor seating to relieve our exhaustion by sitting and relaxing in an air conditioned area. Like most cafeterias here, space is quite limited and as the place remains crowded most of the time, it is a common scene here that you have to wait at least for 10-15 minutes to get a table. Luckily, we got a chance to wait inside the cafeteria enjoying the cool and refreshing air of the AC while we were waiting.

The ambience and décor is just perfect for a place like this which adds color to one’s refreshments. As you scroll through the menu, the style of writing the names along with the backdrop of the page automatically starts refreshing your mind and soul. We had Masala Chai (not the kettle but single cup), lemon tea and green tea.

To accompany the tea, we had grilled cheese n chutney sandwich and curd and coconut sandwich. Orders are served very fast but the waiters need to be a little more efficient to handle the huge crowd that clusters here during the peak hours of the day. Once you will get your orders served on your table, you will rarely get a waiter for further service. It is not like they don’t bother to pay attention; they just can’t manage every table as well as customers waiting properly.

Their tea preparations were simply awesome. We revived our lagging energy and stamina with each sip of the lovely tea. The add-ons were also super – I great place to visit if you are in Jaipur though overly crowded.

All you need to satisfy your hunger is there at Kanha

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

If you are used to places like Gupta Brothers or Haldirams in Kolkata, then Kanha will be absolutely a familiar place to you when you are in the Pink City of our country.  A perfect place to feed your hunger with a lot of varieties starting from chatpati snacks to heavy main courses and sweet desserts, Kanha is a perfect place for all foodies who love to gorge into various delicacies while being economical. Even if you simply want to quench your thirst while giving a tinge of heavenly flavors to your taste buds, Kanha is ready to provide your glasses of amazing mocktails, shakes or other refreshing beverages.

Now the question is - why am I comparing this place with Haldirams or Gupta Brothers? Firstly, the ambience and décor. Without exaggerating the décor, the entire area (both floors) is arranged with plenty of simple dining tables and chairs made from steel and MDF. Spacious and elegantly decorated with contemporary decorative pieces, diners need to do self service from the counter of their choice. Secondly, the food items and quality almost resembles what we are used to in Kolkata at Haldiram’s. So, while I was roaming around inside Kanha, I had a strong feeling that Kanha resembles Haldiram Food City at Ballygunj very much.

The snack, sweet and dessert counters are on the ground floor with a lot of tall height tables for diners who need to stand and swallow their food hurriedly before going back to work. However, for toursits like us who needed to sit and relish North Indian, South Indian, chatpati chaats or pav bhaji, the 1st floor was a better option.

We ordered the North Indian Special Thali, Chinese platter (Chowmein, Fried Rice, Chilli Paneer and Veg Manchurian) and Masala Dosa in our main course, and for appetizers we went in for Mango Tango, Blue Lagoon, Aaloo Tikki and Papri Chaat. As I have mentioned earlier, the items here are very similar to Haldirams’, even in flavour. We gorged on our respective preferences and relished every item till the very end.  With a full stomach, we left the place satisfied, happy with the ambience, food quality, hygiene factor as well as the price. However, as we were really full, we could not satiate our taste buds with the sweetmeats or other desserts peeping through their glass showcases.

Enter a world of chocolate @ Nibs The Chocolate Workshop

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

After experiencing a hearty meal the day before at Tapri, we planned to visit the same place for evening refreshments, but finally ended up at the Nibs - The Chocolate Workshop. A wonderful place to enjoy your evening refreshments with loads of chocolaty snacks, spicy snacks and an assorted range of coffee, tea and other beverages, the name of this place is the first thing that appeals to any foodie. As we were crossing Tonk Road at Lal Kothi near the new Bidhan Sabha, we came across this place and the name forced us to change our decision instantly and enter this place.

Stepping into Nibs means stepping into a world of chocolate. Molten chocolate drops from the ceiling, choco bars are all over the wall - the ambience is exactly as I mentioned except it is constructed artificially to look like real chocolate, so don’t lick the walls! Coming to the rest of the decor, the dining table and chairs are simple yet elegant, made from wood and varnished in a chocolaty color to add flavor to this chocolaty-theme based food joint.

We forgot about tea and jumped into chocolaty stuff instead. We ordered a Chilli Cheese and Tomato Baguette, White Sunday Mood Pasta, Dark Fire and Ice, White Chocolate Chai (yes, chai!) and a Tall Dark Handsome Mocha. None of us had ever tasted these chocolate items before and our first experience moved us. I hope Nibs The Chocolate Workshop opens an outlet in Kolkata for people like us who crave chocolates, especially these types of preparations, rarely found in Cal.

The White Chocolate Chai prepared with Masala tea (with a perfect blend of white choco sauce) was awesome! One sip, you get the flavor of the white chocolate; the next sip, the flavor of masala tea seems to dominate – really interesting! With soooo much chocolate in the Tall Dark Handsome Mocha you will get lost in a pool of chocolate - Dark chocolate with scoops of choco ice-cream which was again blended with milk and coffee – a sinful delight. To experience hot and cold flavors together, Dark Fire and Ice is the best choice – their take on vanilla ice-cream scoops with hot choco sauce. Every item was tempting, especially with their prices!

I liked the place so much that I requested the owners of this chocolate workshop to come to Kolkata as well – a great choc-perience.

Rock on KFC!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Whenever your hunger is a bit carnivore styled, one can safely drop in to KFC. I needed some fast food, and that’s why I came to the KFC outlet on MI Road alone, leaving my friends at Hotel Janak Palace when they refused to accompany me. KFC is so popular in India now and you will find most of the cities maintain the same standard and quality.

There is nothing new to talk about the ambience at KFC. It is always fair and satisfying in terms of decor and hygiene. The same goes for this outlet as well. In this outlet, you will find enough seating, so there is no problem if you want to dine-in. I was alone, so I took a 2-seater table in one corner. I went to the counter and ordered some Hot and Crispy Chicken along with a Choco Peanut Bolt Krusher. The service here is really fast and the staff is (as usual) very well trained. I sat down with my ordered meal and enjoyed the succulent chicken. Soft and juicy inside with a crispy coating outside - a perfect combination if you’re craving some tasty chicken! The pieces were also enough to make me full. Along with these juicy chicken pieces, if you get a Choco Krusher you really don’t need anything else.

KFC is a popular good joint for vegetarians in Jaipur as well, as they offer a number of veg snacks along with krushers, ice-creams and choco lava cake.

Food and “Fusion”!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Fusion near Star Theatre is one of those places that looks pretty on the outside but still requires some amount of improvement on the inside. It is a smart looking place with comfortable and well arranged sitting arrangements. The place has a certain amount of natural feel to it due to the glass walls. The service can be inconsistent sometimes; prompt and efficient on the one hand and slow and incompetent on bad days. On days that you are not in a hurry such inefficiency can be overlooked. There is also lack of consistency with regards to the quantity of the food served to the diners. The quality on the other hand is fresh and healthy. Both their Chinese and North Indian preparations are satisfactory. The price of food is also acceptable and within a reasonable range.

From their very limited soup options, you can savor some nice chinese flavors with their chicken hot and sour soup, chicken manchow soup and sweet corn soup. Their Chinese starters (like chicken 65, crispy chicken, chicken drumsticks and golden fried prawns) are delish items.

They can be very generous with their fried rice and noodle staples. You need to keep this in mind while you order them. Some top noodle and fried rice picks to be had from here can be their mixed Sichuan Hakka chow, chicken Hakka chow, mixed Sichuan fried rice and mixed fried rice. Some of the side dishes to go with these dishes are the usual Chinese basics like chili chicken, sweet and sour prawn, Manchurian fish and Sichuan prawn.

Their north Indian preparations are worth a shot though I didn’t much care for them. Kebabs like chicken tandoori, chicken reshmi kebab and mutton bare kebab were well prepared and can be had as starters.

Tasty food from a local eatery!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Of the many food outlets in Wellesley, Arafat Chinese restaurant is a value for money kind of place. This very simple looking food outlet creates decent Chinese fare. Despite their name, their north Indian dishes are delightful preparations. Their speciality might in fact lean towards their north Indian delicacies (strange but true). The comfortable sitting arrangements only serves to further enhance your dining experience. The prices are reasonable and justify the kind of food served here. The food does not take very long to arrive at your table; you will always get piping hot food here.

They make very flavoursome and light soups that are well seasoned and contain a good amount of meat and vegetables. Whether it is their hot and sour soup or Thai soup, all of them have a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness, spiciness and sourness. Even their sweet corn soup is tasty and heart warming.

Some of those delightful preparations that you can sample are chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken, Manchurian chicken and Sichuan chicken. Their one plate of fried rice and Hakka or gravy noodle will prove quite a task for people with a very small appetite to demolish.

The place is essentially a great place for having north Indian dishes. Their biryanis (though not like the ones that you get in north Indian restaurants Shiraz or Zeeshan) are definitely satisfactory in taste and flavour. Thus, do not hesitate to try out their light but aromatic chicken and mutton biryanis. For meat lovers, their juicy and succulent kebabs are one of a kind. Chicken tandoori, chicken reshmi kebab and chicken tikka kebab are some dishes that you have to order here. Even their mutton rezala, mutton chhap and chicken masala are mouth melting options that go really well with their rotis.
