Sarson

A somewhat latest addition to the posh restaurants at South City Mall, Sarson is immensely popular among food lovers for offering exquisite delicacies. Their service is impeccable; the place boasts of its fabulous ambience and classy décor. The walls of this restaurant are decorated with exquisite objet d'arts. The restaurant is elegantly lit with delicate chandeliers and LED lights. Those who prefer buffet will find an array of preparations, displayed near your dining area. The plush interior, artful ambience and delicious food make Sarson one of the best restaurants in Kolkata. The best part is this restaurant is reasonably priced with a weekday regular lunch buffet costing Rs.495 and dinner buffet costing Rs.545 each. You can also opt for their weekday regular combo buffet and weekday premium combo buffet. Special buffet is arranged on the weekends. From regular lunch and dinner buffet to lunch and dinner premium combo buffet- everything is available at Sarson.

Those who do not want to go for their weekday or weekend buffets can taste some of their awesome preparations offered at pocket-friendly rates. I always prefer tasting a few preparations from their menu instead of opting for weekday or weekend buffets. During my last visit, I actually got the taste of real north Indian delicacies tenderly cooked and flavoured with aromatic spices and herbs. Our order consisted of chooza angaare (lip smacking tandoori chicken), surkh lal murgh tikka (a preparation where boneless morsels of chicken are marinated in hot spices, hung curd and whole red chillies), lasoni jalpari (fresh jumbo prawns marinated in spices with yogurt and garlic), murgh tikka lababdar (a unique preparation of tender chicken tikka morsels which are immersed in a mildly spiced tomato and onion gravy) and murgh handi biryani. The chicken pieces and prawns were soft and juicy. Although I often eat out, I must say that I've never had such good food for years.  Sarson prepares a few but nectarous desserts. I tried some flambeed kesari gulab jamun and fig and honey kulfi which were simply awesome.

To taste their delish preparations you have to find your way to the South City Mall (2nd floor). Book a table beforehand because there are chances that you’ve to wait for your turn, especially on weekends.

Italy's Gelato Italiano in Kolkata

If you have a sweet tooth for yummy desserts, then try out some at Gelato Italiano, located on the 3rd floor of South City Mall. Soft, luscious and nectarous, the gelato ice creams practically melt in your mouths.  What’s more you can get a wide variety of flavours ranging from strawberry, blue berries, chocolates, yogurt and butter scotch here at Gelato Italiano.  In these summer days nothing will be more temping than a luscious gelato dessert served either in a cone or in a cup to weary shoppers! You can also choose your flavours and dig into a unique sundae without burning a hole in your pocket.

True it is difficult to find proper seating arrangements on the 3rd of South City Mall as that floor is always jam-packed with food lovers, occupying almost all the tables and enjoying mouth-watering delicacies, offered at various food joints. But don’t worry you do not need to find a separate table to enjoy your luscious gelato. You can have it anywhere- standing in a corner or walking about peeping into the designer stores and outlets. Whenever I’m in South City I never forget to taste one or the other gelato dessert. Till date I have tasted Black currant, vanilla choco chips, blueberry cheesecake, forestberry cheese cake, choco fudge brownie, royal kulfi, limoncello ice and chocolate fruit &nut. It's true that you can enjoy your gelato anywhere -standing or roaming around. But, when you are having choco fudge brownie or blueberry or forestberry cheese cake, it's better to find a proper table, sit comfortably and then dig into your dessert. In this way you actually get the heavenly pleasure of a real gelato dessert, ruminating with closed eyes and savouring the soft cream in your mouth.

For a change try gelatos instead of the typical ice cream that you have every time. Any gelato ice cream is soft and creamy; it melts in your mouth and you experience the real pleasure that any ice cream lover looks for when he takes his first lick.

Horrendous experience at Coffee World

One thing that I hate most is paying high prices for snacks and beverages that taste awful! But that was a kind of bitter experience I had in Coffee World. Tucked up in a corner on the 2nd floor of South City Mall (beside Star Mark), Coffee World offers a seating arrangement for 12- 15 people comfortably. From inside Star Mark, I cast a glance at this small coffee shop and find most of the seats occupied by coffee lovers. I had a feeling that probably they serve truly delicious coffee or hot chocolate and yummy cakes, muffins and cookies.  One day I decided to pamper my taste buds with some snacks and munchies from Coffee World. It was Thursday and a few coffee lovers occupied three tables. I seated myself comfortably in one sofa and ordered a doughnut, one smoked chicken & pepper sandwich and some mocha frappe.

Either my expectations were too high or my taste buds are far too delicate for I just abhorred the taste of the doughnut, sandwich and frappe. I had a feeling that the doughnut was stale, the chocolate sauce on the doughnut tasted awful. They could not prepare the chicken sandwich. Due to extra use of pepper, the sandwich tasted bitter. The sandwich was served with a few Lays potato chips (unasked) and I thought it was complimentary. But when I asked for my bill I found that they charged me extra 30 rupees for a few potato chips, which I didn’t even order.  I also did not like the taste of my mocha frappe, which had a typical pungent flavour. To make matters worse, there was leakage in the ceiling and constant dripping of water droplets on the table made it impossible for me to sit and enjoy my food.

When I complained the waiters coolly told me to change my place. I never had such a horrendous experience in any coffee shop and I regret eating at Coffee World and paying my bill (exorbitant). In addition, they extracted extra 30 bucks for a few chips that I did not even order. Avoid trying this place next time you are in South City Mall!

Pamper your taste buds with Chinese and Indian cuisines at reasonable rate at Zaika

Calm and pleasant ambience with dim illumination to create a romantic atmosphere, Zaika is a Chinese and Indian restaurant located at 132 B, Southern Avenue, Kolkata, beside HDFC Bank. When you crave for a delicious meal and your pocket does not permit much, this is a perfect destination in South Kolkata where you can savor delectable Chinese and Indian cuisines at reasonable range. Situated very close to Gariahat, one of the prime shopping areas of Kolkata, Zaika is a small restaurant perfect for hangouts with friends.

Often, when I visit Gariahat for shopping or to have a chit-chat with friends, we prefer Zaika, mainly due to its pleasing ambience and also for its delicious eateries available at pocket friendly price. Recently, in this month, I went there with four of my friends just to spend the evening together with some light items for evening snacks. But finally we ended up with a full dinner. The day was Thursday and I always have veg preparation on this day of the week. Initially I ordered Crispy Chilli Baby Corn and my friends ordered Chicken Drum Sticks and Chicken Sweet Corn Soup. All these were perfectly prepared as they always use to do. Then as we decided to have our dinner together, we placed our orders for Veg Schezuan Chowmein and Sweet-n-Sour Paneer for me, Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Fried Rice, Sweet-n-Sour Chicken and Chilli Chicken for the other four. Their delicious preparations added more charm to our chit-chat and we all enjoyed the evening party, especially when our appetite got satisfied.

Besides the wide array of scrumptious Chinese and Indian dishes that Zaika serves in its warm and cozy atmosphere, you can also enjoy a cold feel here with its special sundae ice-creams. Different types of sundae ice-creams are available here with different toppings and the price starts from only Rs. 45/-. Last day also, we ended our dinner giving a cold and sweet taste to our taste buds when we ordered for Tutty Fruity, Choco Caramel, Choco Delight and Blind Love.

Simplicity prevails everywhere in Zaika’s interior décor. Less than ten dining tables complete the set up of the dining area in two separate rooms. The place is not so spacious and therefore, not ideal for those people who prefer dining in privacy. The walls are decorated with pieces of mirror which reflect the lights to create a wonderful effect in its interior.

Pocket friendly & yummy delicacies at Yummee

If I am nearby Short Street, nothing can keep me away from Yummee. Yes! The name of this place is perfectly justified. Situated at 3B Short Street near St. Xavier’s College Back Gate, Yummee is a Chinese restaurant serving a wide range of Chinese as well as fast food preparations at reasonably low rate. Nothing much to talk about the ambience, Yummee is a small restaurant with limited outdoor seating arrangements. The ambience may disappoint many but when you will look at the menu card along with the rate chart, you will understand that this ambience merely matters as you are getting Mixed Chow@ only Rs. 50 and so on. Where on earth you will find such?

Now considering such a low price, many may doubt about the quality as I did when I was there for the first time. Truly speaking, my first experience has returned me to this place many times. It is true that preparations served here are not obviously like Mainland China or Jimmy’s Kitchen but not too bad to swallow. The preparations are by and large mediocre. Whenever I am there, I prefer to have chow or rice preparations along with some side dish. One thing about side dish, I need to mention. The taste is fine and the item is also perfect when it is a veg preparation, especially paneer. But whenever it comes to chicken preparation, you will find very small pieces of chicken. The chicken balls in Chilli Chicken, Hong Kong Chicken etc are filled with corn flour coating with very small chicken stuffing. And one more thing, it is always better not to try any kind of soup here. It is better to rename soup as spicy boiled water. However the roll section is fine. The parathas are thick and are well stuffed with the fillings. So whenever I don’t have a plan to sit and dine here, I prefer to have Chicken or Veg roll.

Flavours of North India at The Restaurant on The First Floor

On 23rd December, 2012, five of us, means our friends group went to The Restaurant on The First Floor to celebrate one of our friend’s promotion. He gave us a grand treat there. This restaurant is situated at 50/1B, Purna Das Road, near Golpark, Gariahat. The Restaurant on The First Floor is a typical North Indian restaurant with a tinge of royal style in every preparation, starting from the nomenclature of the dishes to the taste and culinary art. As it was Christmas and New Year time, the entire interior decoration reflected a festive and joyous mood, beautifully decorated with stars, balloons and sparkling ribbons.

We took our seats in a large round table and after we were comfortable at our seats, the waiter approached us to give the menu card. While selecting the menu, we were a bit confused with the unique styled names of the preparations but the warm hospitality of the waiter guided us perfectly to get the right choices for a lavish North Indian dinner. For the appetizer, we ordered Murg Banjara Tikka, Lahsuni Murg Tikka and Fresh Sweet Lime Soda. Both the chicken starters were prepared in a unique style with totally different spices. Both were boneless and as the name suggests, garlic flavor was very much prominent in Lahsuni one and the other one can be described simply as hot and spicy. These mouth watering starters were followed by Murg Awadhi Korma and Chicken Biriyani. Both of these items were served in copper plated serving bowls. As guided by the waiter, we ordered three plates of Biriyani for five of us as one bowl is sufficient enough for two persons. The taste of Biriyani is not exactly the same as served at conventional Biriyani houses. But the taste was too good to relish and when it was complemented with the chicken preparation, it became awesome. The chicken main course was prepared in a typical Lucknow style with hot spices and cream. Our tummies were so tight with all these heavenly dishes that we hardly had any space in our tummies to taste any dessert there, though our taste buds longed for it.

Lip smacking North Indian dishes only at The Funjabi Tadka

If you really love to sit and relish some lip smacking North Indian dishes in a warm and bright ambience, then The Funjabi Tadka is the ultimate destination in Kolkata where you will get a wide variety of North Indian choices to satiate your taste buds. Situated at 19A, Southern Avenue in Kolkata near Rashbehari Crossing, this AC restaurant is almost like a new invention for a super foodie like me. This January, on Republic Day, I along with my family members went to The Funjabi Tadka for a relishing Republic Day special lunch. This is the first time we visited the place and after reaching there, we were delighted to receive such a warm welcome from the restaurant staffs.

Beautifully decorated with bright lights, exclusive decorative pieces and simple yet elegant dining tables, the interior decoration of this place really amazed me. We adjusted ourselves comfortably on a 6-seater dining table and started rolling our eyes across the menu chart. Finally we started placing our order with three glasses each of Cookie di Lassi and Cappuccino Lassi along with one plate of Lawrence Road ka Tandoori Murgh and Fish Amritsari. These appetizers were followed by a mind blowing main course which included Paneer Highway Butter Masala and Patiala Shahi Murgh along with TFT Special Chicken Matka Biriyani. We put an end to our order with Malpua Rabdi and Malai Pista Kulfi with Rabdi Falooda. Both the varieties of Lassi were amazing…full of thick milk cream and well processed curd, very tasty and very yummy. And when the taste of these beverages are complied with the delicious and spicy tastes of Lawrence Road ka Tandoori Murgh and Fish Amritsari, it became impossible to resist my taste buds from going on savoring the taste. Finally when the Biriyani reached our table in a large earthen pot called ‘Matka’ covered with a semi-baked roti, we were delighted to see the culinary art and presentation. Quantity of biriyani in one matka was more than enough for two people. In the chicken preparation, there were boiled egg pieces. Finally the typical spicy North Indian taste was complimented by sweet and yummy desserts. Price was reasonable, approximately it amounts to Rs. 350-400 per person.

The 6 Russel Street: Chat-pata and tasty!

Located at 6 Russel Street, Kolkata near Maidan Metro Station, The 6 Russel Street is one of my favorite destinations to get my tummy filled with some of the mouth watering veg eateries at pocket friendly rate. I often visit this place as it is on my way to home from office. So my evening hunger is frequently satisfied by this small take-away restaurant. Situated at a prime location, at the junction of two streets, The 6 Russel Street is almost like a road side restaurant serving authentic South Indian preparations and street foods. No seating arrangement for dine-in service but still this vegetarian eating hub remains crowded throughout the day.

Specialist in South Indian preparations, I think the cheese masala dosa is one of the best cuisines it serves. So yummy and so tasty that you will love to relish the cheesy flavor on and on. Also the wide range of chats is simply mouth watering. Chat-pata and tasty! The mixed chat and dahi vada are the two of my favorites in the chats list. Aloo tikka is also a delicious item here. I have tried paw baji once or twice but to be frank, I don’t like this preparation here. The curry for the paw is not so good. Not a spacious and high grade restaurant but The 6 Russel Street is surely one of the favorite hang outs for college students and working people. I have often come across a gathering of St. Xavier’s College students there, chatting and enjoying the spicy and yummy preparations of this eating hub. At such a reasonable rate, they offer sufficient quantity to satisfy the taste buds with mouth watering flavors and the tummy with enough quantity. Next time if you are somewhere near this place, try the chats of this place to give a spicy treat to your taste buds.

Never again at Spice Garden

Without any prior planning, I along with one of my friends rushed into Spice Garden as we both were too much hungry after a long shopping at AC Market and Emami Market. Situated at 1, AJC Bose Road, Kolkata, this restaurant was nearby Emami Market and so without a second thought we visited this destination. It was around 7 PM and we found that only two tables are left vacant. As we entered, one waiter guided us to one of those vacant tables. All the tables were 4-seater. He requested us to occupy the seats on the same side of the table and at this request, we got a bit surprised. However we did what he said and placed all our shopping bags on the opposite side.

After we were comfortable in our seats and rolling our eyes through the menu card, a stinking smell reached my nose and it gradually grew louder and louder as time passed by. Very soon we realized that it is the smell of the hard drinks. I have been to a number of bar-cum-restaurants but I have never smelled such a stinking smell anywhere. This happened mainly due to the improper ventilation system and congested seating arrangements. Gradually the smell became just intolerable for me. However, amidst all these annoying features, we placed our orders which included Chicken Noodles, Chicken Szechwan Fried Rice and Lemon Honey Glaze Chicken. They did not take much time to serve our orders. While we were concentrating on our dishes and chatting, much to our surprise we saw an aged person requesting us to shift our bags aside so that he can sit in the same table at our opposite side. We were more surprised to see the same waiter beside him who guided us also. He also requested the same thing and when we expressed our doubt about this seating style, he replied that it was a common system there. We were helpless and did what he said. In front of us, the man sat with a bottle of vodka and some snacks and continued his drinking session comfortably. But we were uncomfortable in this situation. We literally forgot to sit and relish our dishes. We just gulped. Spice Garden has given me the most horrible dining session in my lifetime.

Plunge into the pool of cakes, pastries and delicious snacks at Skyline Confectioners

I feel like jumping from the 10th floor of my building to dive into the pool of cakes, pastries and delicious snacks! You may be wondering, if I have gone crazy? And the answer is yes, I have gone crazy and anyone who loves confectioneries will go crazy when the person will have a confectionery store like Skyline Confectioners right at the opposite side of his or her home. Situated at 101/1A, Karaya Road, Kolkata-700019, Skyline Confectioners is a brand new snacks bar which has opened this July.

Located right in front of our 12 storey building, Skyline Confectioners always gives me a welcome call whenever I look out from my balcony. If you have been to famous confectioneries stores like Kookie Jar, Cakes and The French Loaf, you can definitely realize that you can savor the yummy desserts and snacks giving a good punch to your pocket and if you want to cut down your budget, you need to compromise with the taste. But, step into Skyline Confectioners once and see how they fill your mouth with heavenly and yummy confectioneries, exactly similar to the above mentioned renowned stores but at reasonable rate. The minimum price starts from Rs. 10. So now you imagine.

Fully vegetarian snacks bar, Skyline Confectioners offers an array of mouth watering snacks and yummy cakes, desserts, pastries and cookies. On the inaugural day, I visited the store to buy pastries and as soon as I entered, they welcomed by offering me to taste any pastry or dessert of my choice before I place any order. That heartiest welcome just swayed me away. Moreover, they also gifted me a box of chocolates. This warm welcome and a wonderful way to bid good bye with a box of chocolates won the hearts of every customer who visited there. After its inaugural I bought different eateries on different occasions. This September, I celebrated my brother’s and my father’s birthday with birthday cakes ordered from this store. On my brother’s birthday, I ordered Choco Fudge Cake and on my father’s birthday, we ordered Black Forest Cake. Both were amazing to taste, so soft and so yummy that you feel like having more and more until the last bite disappears in your mouth. And I don’t know whether you will believe or not, one pound cake costs only Rs. 260/-.

Besides these two special occasions, I visit the store frequently for Pizzas, Patties, Choco Tarts, Pastries and Sandwiches. Each of the items is prepared with delectable and eye-soothing culinary art. Fully air conditioned with friendly staffs, the store is small without any seating arrangement.

Walk into to Sher-e-Bengal and dine at reasonable rate

Sher-e-Bengal is a restaurant situated at 200/2B, Rash Behari Avenue, Kolkata. It includes North Indian and Chinese cuisines in its menu chart. It is a dining hub of Bedouin group. It is one of the famous and old dining houses in the major shopping area of South Kolkata, well known as Gariahat.

I have been in this restaurant many times because this is a place where an array of eateries is available at reasonable rate. You can make your choices from Chinese, North Indian and Bengali dishes. The restaurant is itself spacious but the arrangement of dining tables and chairs has made the both the dining halls on first and second floor, very clumsy.

I visited the restaurant recently with my family on a Sunday evening after a lot of shopping for upcoming Durga Puja. When we entered the dining hall, we found many other families like us, enjoying or placing orders for their dinners after a lot of shopping. One of the staff guided us to a table for four.

Once we were comfortable, the same person came and asked for the order to be placed. After a little discussion among ourselves, we placed our order. As we knew that Chinese is our only option here, for starters we ordered Dry Chilli Chicken for three of us (my father, brother and me) and for my mother, we ordered Crispy Babycorn and Mushroom. For the main course, we ordered Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Fried Rice and Veg Chowmein along with Salsa Chicken and Chilli Fish. The food was good as usual.

Sher-e-Bengal’s Chinese is good and can be rated as mediocre but after tasting North Indian once or twice here, I came to a point that this is simply not their cup of tea. I am a regular diner at popular North Indian houses like Zeeshan and Arsalan and after tasting at those places, you will not feel like having North Indian at this restaurant.

Moreover, the service here is also not up-to-dated. Although there are a number of waiters, often I have seen that after giving a number of calls to the waiter, they finally respond. The waiters are also not well trained. Once, it also happened to me that while dine-in I placed an order for take-away and they served that item on the table.

To be frank, this is not a perfect dining hub if you want to enjoy a lip smacking and luxurious dining experience.  But within pocket friendly budget, you can surely enjoy average quality of service and food here.

Experience the delight of eating and enjoying at Mainland China in Avani Riverside Mall, Howrah

Whenever I visit Mainland China at Avani Riverside Mall, 32, Jagat Banerjee Ghat Road, Howrah for lunch or dinner, I get the feeling that I am on cloud 9. It is revered for the exquisite lunch and dining experience it provides to its customers. It’s a fully air-conditioned restaurant. No sooner do I step into the restaurant than I get the feeling that I am at home. Food servers, waiters and hosts are hospitable to their customers. They possess the right decorum of receiving their customers in a nice and formal way.

It is going to be very unfair if I am not going to talk about their mushroom starters. The Stir Fried Mushroom Ginger Chilly was awesome. A delighted smell went into my nose when they served the dish on my table. I got lost within the “yummilicious” taste of fried mushrooms marinated with ginger and chilly and garnished with coriander leaves. This mouth-watering starter must be tried by every food lover who goes to Mainland China on and often to satiate the hunger of their taste buds with spicy and hot dish. Chicken Taipei is another appetizer I am going to recommend to all chicken lovers. I really loved the way they garnished the dish and served me hot with Ching’s sauce. The fish items in main course are fabulous. I have tasted almost all of them and my mouth gets watered as and when I sit on my couch and think about the soft, hot and spicy pieces of fish … melts in mouth! I am getting lost again! The main course dish Maoshi Chicken in a Clay Pot goes well with Chicken Fried Rice and I got lost so much into the taste of Mainland China’s Chicken Fried Rice that last time when I visited the restaurant, I was about to engulf the spoon with which I was eating the fried rice! Mainland China serves authentic and tasty cuisine from China. A Chinese food lover should opt for slipping in the branch of Mainland China at Avani Riverside Mall, where they will be getting authentic Chinese cuisine at a much cheaper rate, compared to the other branches of Mainland China located in Kolkata.

Badshah’s chicken rolls can be good appetizers

Badshah in Lindsay Street has kept on providing me a good space for rest, chat and drink during my college days. The calm and cozy atmosphere of the bar in first floor of Badshah allowed me and my close friend to have tete-a-tete. It offered me and my friends to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Kolkata, talk among ourselves and plan what to do and what not to do. We had white rum with chicken fingers. The cost of per plate chicken fingers was Rs. 75.00. It was not so reasonable. We needed to pay a certain amount as VAT along with actual price of the dish, which eventually gave us a bit jerk and we felt that we could easily access a better quality restaurant in Esplanade area. Youngsters do love to visit Badshah for its exquisite kebabs, which are really yummy and chicken rolls. Badshah is famous for chicken rolls. Most people order chicken rolls and eat them up standing outside the restaurant. Even I sometimes opt for eating outside Badshah when I am too hungry to engulf one or two rolls at a time and do not have much time or money to move into a quality restaurant. Recently they are giving small quantities of chicken pieces inside rolls and the parathas have also got thin but the taste remains all the same. Mutton preparations are also great to eat in Badshah. The aloo and paneer rolls are not so great. They did not care to marinate the paneer pieces with the right kinds of spices that are essential for making vegetarian rolls. Among the main course meals I like Chicken Do Piyaza with rice. They are delicious and spicy to eat. That is the one main course of Badshah I cherish for till date. The surrounding of the ground floor, which happens to be the restaurant is too clumsy to sit and enjoy lunch with family.

Machaan is irresistible

Howrah has recently got a small stretch of sophisticated jungle – flora and fauna surrounding the land, long trunked elephants trumpeting and trying to grasp you, birds chirping around, strange and mysterious sounds reverberating in the land. This stretch of land is known as Machaan. It’s the name of a restaurant. One of its outlets has recently been opened at Avani Mall, Howrah. The restaurant has all the mystery, suspense and magic of wild jungle. It is a themed restaurant and I love to spend time in Machaan with my family. The ambience of this themed restaurant can create magic even over a cup of coffee. The atmosphere can have a titillating effect on you if you plan to hang up with your sweetheart. The restaurant has brought together different kinds of rare and long forgotten dishes and appetizers from Ranthambore, Duars, Gir and Kanha.

Every dish is cooked with enthusiastic seasoning to acquire perfection. If you are a figure-conscious person then you can jolly well slip into Machaan for nutritious and tender dishes, cooked with extreme care and served with decency. My thirteen year old brother never gets bored with Machaan and loves to hang out over there with me. Junglee Chaas happens to be my favorite thirst quencher in Machaan and I never fail to order this thirst quencher made of chilled and fresh buttermilk, Indian spices and garnished with fresh coriander leaves.  Ajwaini Fish Tikka and Chandni Tikka are my favorite appetizers. These North Indian dishes are slowly cooked in Tandoors after fish and chicken pieces are being marinated in cream, yoghurt, ginger and onion paste. I have experienced true North Indian flavors in Machaan. Biryani was simply great and yummy over there. Machaan uses high-quality basmati rice as the main ingredient of biryani and layering of rice are being done with utmost care. They serve biryani in metal pots. I ordered Dahi Methi Murgh to have it with biryani. Yoghurt was the main material of Dahi Methi Murgh and cooks in Machaan fried chicken lightly in oil with cardamom and added fenugreek leaves for garnishing. The desert Apple Jalebi with Rabri was really delicious. Machaan has become one of my favorite haunts! Just cannot resist visiting Machaan whenever I wish to spend some quality time with my family.

Ralli’s, the budget friendly refreshment bar

If you want to sit and relax with your friend or somebody special for long hours with a glass of refreshing drink in a cozy little restaurant or café, then nothing can be better than the Ralli’s at Golpark. Situated at 56 Ballygunge Gardens, Kolkata, Ralli’s is one of my favorite destinations to hang out with friends. I have been here a number of times but recently, I was there in the last week on Sunday evening. The interior space is very limited with only four dining tables on the 1st floor and only seating arrangement in the ground floor.

We were five all total and so we moved upstairs to occupy the table for six. The waiter knows us as we are frequent visitors. He offered us the menu chart. As it was Sunday evening, there was a heavy rush at this restaurant. So, after we placed our order, it took some time to serve our orders and hence we got enough time for our friendly chit-chats. Firstly we ordered five types of refreshing syrups; Sweet Lime Syrup, Rose Syrup, Badam Syrup, Mango Syrup and Blue Lagoon Syrup. My choice was Badam Syrup and it is always very tasty and refreshing. I mostly prefer this one but often I opt for Sweet Lime Syrup also. I don’t prefer the other choices in syrup but when the same syrups come in Shakes, the taste becomes more lip smacking. These were served almost instantly but the later orders took some time to appear in our table. Apart from syrups, we ordered Singara Chat, Plain Kachori Chat, Mixed Chat, Plain Dosa and Masala Dosa. Mixed Chat was my preference but we all shared each other’s choices. As always, Ralli’s never disappoints me because of its simplicity and mouth watering preparations. So, if you are planning to hang out with friends, don’t miss the name, Ralli’s.

South Indian taste in Kolkata: Nu Variety

If you are a pure vegetarian, Nu Variety is one of the best food plazas in South Kolkata that offers a wide range of options at pocket friendly budget. Located at 1, Sarat Bose Road, Kolkata, near Minto Park crossing, Nu Variety is an authentic South Indian restaurant which remains open every day in a week from 8.30 in the morning till 9.30 at night.

I am a crazy lover of South Indian foods, especially Dosa and Utthapam and so, this is my favorite destination where I visit frequently. This place is located near my residence, so whenever my mouth craves for South Indian flavors, I rush to Nu Variety. The price of the wide range of Dosa preparations starts from just Rs. 35. Among the varieties of Dosa, my favorite is Cheese Chilly Paper Masala Dosa. I have hop around at many South Indian restaurants but at very few destinations, I found this type of preparations. Here, Masala of the Dosa doesn’t mean stuffing with potato only. Although Cheese Chilly Paper Masala Dosa is my favorite, but mostly I try Masala Dosa. The Dahi Vada here is also superb and totally different, soft, a little spicy and the quality of Dahi is very excellent. The Mixed Utthapam compliments itself due to its culinary look and taste.

Besides these mouth watering South Indian dishes, a wide range of snacks, chats, pizzas, burgers and sandwiches are also available here. The Mixed Pizza and Mix Chat is a must have here if you are here for having snacks. For breakfast, I don’t think, there is any better option than Grilled Veg Cheese Sandwich and a glass of Lassi. The Lassi is fabulous here. Anyone who tastes it will feel the rich cream of the milk in every sip. Thick and heavy, this Lassi is the best refreshing drink that you will miss, if you don’t try.
The menu chart also includes different lunch packs, prepared with different items for every single day, seven days a week. So many items and so many variations, but the restaurant is very small actually. Nu Variety resembles like a cafeteria. Two or three dining tables are arranged in that small area and there is a place for stand-and-dine. Decoration is very simple and normal but its culinary preparations supersede all its other features. So if you are ever at Minto Park, don’t forget to have a meal at Nu Variety, a super and authentic Veg restaurant!

At least no momo at Momo Plaza

Momo Plaza is a mediocre restaurant situated at 2A, Suburban Hospital Road, near Elgin Road, Kolkata. It is a typical Chinese and Tibetan restaurant serving a variety of preparations. It is located at the ground floor of a house. So the entrance is nothing appealing, neither the interior also. The dining tables are arranged in three sections partitioned by walls. The place seems to be very congested and dingy due to the discolored and dull walls with a few dirty antique decorative pieces and limited lighting. You can even ignore these flaws if you get a better service from the staffs. But still this place remains crowded and I am also a frequent visitor here because this is one of the best eating hubs in Exide area at affordable range.

Though it offers a wide range of Chinese and Tibetan dishes, they don’t know how to prepare Momos. I love Momos and so I have tasted Momos at various destinations but I must say the road side Momo stalls prepare at least much better Momos than Momo Plaza. Twice I have ordered Momo here and both the time, I was very much disappointed. So dry and rubbery..that I literally had to put effort to tear a piece. Moreover, the stuffing is also very less. More onion than chicken in the stuffing. However, they are expert in thukpa, soups and other Chinese preparations. The Dry Chili Chicken is really amazing. Another thing that I really never want to miss whenever I am here is the Chicken Thukpa. Healthy, tasty and enough in quantity to satisfy my tummy along with the taste buds! Russian Salad and Chicken with Kaju Salad are also two of my favorite preparations here. Though the ambience, service and momo preparations have always disappointed me but still, this is one of my favorite dining destinations.

Southeast Asian flavors are now in Kolkata at Mavirek- The Little Bistro

A few days back, I saw an email from Groupon in my mailbox. As I opened the mail, I saw an amazing offer which I grabbed immediately. The offer is on a meal for two persons at Mavirek- The Little Bistro. The meal of Rs. 565 is available just for Rs. 175. The menu mentioned in the offer was:

·   2 Non-Veg Pan Rolls OR 2 Veg Spring Rolls
·   1 Veg OR Non-Veg Letho Salad
·   Main Course: Any One of the Following:
a)   1 Napla Chicken with Rice
b)   1 Chicken Red Curry with Rice
c)    1 Veg Green Curry with Rice
d)   1 Veg / Non-Veg Khowswey + Condiments
·   2 Slices of Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce OR 2 Soft Beverages

So tell me why I won’t grab such a catchy offer immediately when I am such a big foodie. This restaurant is located at 19/5, Saharpur Colony Block 'J' New Alipore, Ground Floor, Kolkata 700053. As soon as I made the online payment, I received the voucher via email. Soon after that I gave a phone call to my best friend residing at New Alipore and told him about the offer. We planned and finalized the date and timing of exploring this food plaza. We visited the place around 8.30 PM for our dinner.
Mavirek is an authentic Burmese and Thai restaurant. As we entered, we received a traditional Southeast Asian welcome from the doorman. One of the well dressed and properly groomed waiters approached towards us and listened that we are there to avail the Groupon offer. With a pleasing smile in face, he guided us to our table. Both of us sat and gazed at the silent interior beauty of this gastronomic enclave. The interior décor represents a touch of indigenous artwork of Southeast Asia. There is no concept of chair in the dining area. We sat on cushioned Burmese stool.

Then the same waiter came and took our order. We ordered 2 Chicken Pan Rolls with Garlic Sauce and 1 Chicken Letho Salad for starters. Both the dishes came almost simultaneously and just from the culinary appearance of these two dishes, we two almost jumped upon them to savor the Southeast Asian flavors.
Both the preparations were awesome, especially the pan rolls. I have never tasted Letho Salad earlier and so its taste was totally new and tempting for me. Then we had one plate of Napla Chicken with Rice. Although it was one plate, but the quantity was just perfect for two! And the taste….it is simply awesome. This main course was followed by 2 slices of vanilla ice cream with hot chocolate sauce.
We had a great time there savoring all the scrumptious Thai dishes at an amazing price. This restaurant has increased my desire for Thai dishes and so I am planning to visit there once more.

Yummy yummy Chinese delicacies at Freak Out

Recently one of my college friends returned to Kolkata from Chennai in a leave after a long time and we all planned to have a lunch together. Finally on last Saturday, four of us went to Freak Out to have a gathering together while celebrating our togetherness through a lunch. None of us have been there ever but as we were near Elgin Road for a little shopping there, we ended up at this restaurant at 89, Chowringhee Road, Kolkata, near Rabindra Sadan Metro Station.

The restaurant is not spacious and seating arrangement is also quite congested. The 4-seater tables are not enough to serve four plates, serving bowls and glasses for four people. Serving area is very much limited.  So the ambience, especially the dining arrangement disappointed me a lot. I started doubting about the preparations. However, after tasting all the items that we ordered, all my annoyance disappeared. As it was nearly 2.30PM and we were too hungry, we skipped the starters and directly made our choices from main course. We placed our orders which included Vegetable Fried Rice, Szechwan Fried Rice(Veg), Mixed  Chowmein(Gravy),  Szechwan Chicken, Honey Chicken and Chilli Chicken Dry. Each of the preparations was really good. I tasted Honey Chicken for the first time and the mild sweetness of honey in this preparation tasted really very good. And as usual, I always love Szechwan preparations and contrary to my expectation and opinion about this place because of its ambience, Freak Out won my heart with its fabulous Szechwan preparations. I didn’t taste Chowmein but my friend’s appreciation reflected a positive answer. At the end, the Dry Chilli Chicken simply gave a flavor to enjoy for my taste buds. Mainly the capsicum flavor in this preparation was too good.

After such a relishing lunch, it is quite obvious that we will be worrying about our pocket. But as the preparations satisfied us just like anything, the bill also pleased us as the total bill was nearly Rs. 700/- which is quite appealing.

Vegetarian delicacies at Bombay Shiv Sagar

Last week on the day of Saraswati Puja, I along with my two other friends went to Bombay Shiv Sagar to have a typical vegetarian dinner on this auspicious day. According to me, Bombay Shiv Sagar is the right place to have authentic as well as delicious vegetarian meal at reasonable rate. So I suggested them this name and finally we ended up by reaching there around 7.30PM. Located in the eastern part of India at 22, Camac Street, 1st Floor, Block D (Pantaloons Building), this restaurant is ready to serve everything from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari  starting from Chinese, typical North Indian, South Indian, fast food to road side chats.

We started our dinner with Sweet Corn Mushroom Soup and Baby Corn Mushroom Chilly. Hot and spicy, the Baby Corn Mushroom Chilly made a perfect combination with the sweet tasting soup. The starters were followed by Chana Masala, Aloo Paratha and Handi Dum Biriyani and Szechwan Fried Rice. Aloo Paratha was heavily stuffed with mashed potato preparation and therefore tasted too yummy. Even I did not need Chana Masala for having added taste to have it, because the taste was too good to have it separately. Chana Masala was good, nothing special about it. However, I felt Handi Dum Biriyani was more like Vegetable Fried Rice rather than Biriyani. The taste was almost similar to Fried Rice. But there is nothing to complain about the taste. Taste was really good. The Szechwan Fried Rice was really amazing. Perfect taste and perfect amount of Szechwan spices made this cuisine really lip smacking. I really enjoyed the dinner here as this place never burns a hole in our pocket after giving us a great opportunity to savor mouth watering preparations. At the end of the dinner for three, the total bill amounted to about Rs. 700/- only.

Bangali bhoj at Bhooter Raja Dilo Bar

On one Sunday last month, I went to Dinabandhu Andrews College of Technology at Patuli for an entrance examination. My exam ended at nearly 1 PM and after leaving the examination hall, I met one of my school friends after so many years. She was also a candidate for this examination. We both were delighted to see each other and soon we decided to celebrate this meeting with a lunch together. She knows that area quite well as she is a resident of Garia and she only suggested the place Bhooter Raja Dilo Bar which is located very near to our examination center.

Bhooter Raja Dilo Bar is a typical Bengali restaurant, serving every item which is prepared regularly in a traditional Bengali family. We entered there at high lunch time, around 1.30PM. The ambience was good, nothing amazing but well organized and in every element, there is a reflection of Bengali tradition. We comfortably took our seats and asked for the menu card. As we both have an excellent idea about Bengali cuisines and at that time we both were too hungry for lunch, so we decided to take two plates of Basmoti Rice along with Dhokar Dalna, Chanar Kofta and Chicken Posto. As always, I preferred Lassi for beverage though my heart longed for Aam Pora Sorbot but as this is not the perfect season for mangoes, they could not serve that beverage. After placing the order, they took very little time to serve the placed orders. Each of the preparations was awesome and we literally sat and relished the items. I loved the Chanar Kofta the most because the “chana” was prepared from pure milk and the creamy delicious taste simply asks for one adjective “wow”! I have rarely been to such typical Bengali restaurants but I really loved it. The lunch was really a great experience because of the lip smacking preparations and of course due to my old friend’s presence.

Bangaliyanar Sholoana at Aaheli - The Peerless Inn

Last year, I along with my parents and brother visited Aaheli - The Peerless Inn for dinner during Bengali New Year’s Season. Basically we visited there because it was my dad’s official party for Bengali New Year. As we reached there and parked our car in the parking area, the ambience of the place simply amazed me. I went on gazing at the beautiful interior decoration of the lobby. Suddenly the warm and caring hospitality of one of the hotel staff distracted me as he guided us to Aaheli. It seemed that he knows us for long time.

As the gateway to Aaheli opened with a traditional Bengali welcome saying “Namaskar” in folded hands, we entered into a totally new world. Really it seemed like that. All the male staffs were dressed in typical Bengali fashion statement, Punjabi and dhoti with chappal (slippers). This dining hall is totally decorated in Bengali style, with Bengali hand fans made from palm tree leaves, lantern and teraccota designs. The dining table decoration also reflected a Bengali style. After we were comfortable in our seats, one of the waiters, dressed in Bengali attire, came to us and offered us four plates and glasses, all made from “Kasa”, a common and costly golden colored metal alloy used to made utensils in traditional Bengal. I was awe-struck to see this. As we were not there for normal dining, we did not require the menu card to decide our menu though we had it in our table. The first item (the appetizer) that decorated my shining Kasa plate was Rui Macher Patisapta. Unlike conventional patisapta, this patisapta (a conventional Bengali dessert) was totally stuffed with Rohu fish fillings. It was followed by a bowl of Bengali Pulao and Parser Jhal, Chanar Dalna, Posto Chingri, Chingrir Malaikari, Bhetkir Paturi, Bhapa Ilish and Dab Chingri. Finally the main course came to an end with one bowl of white rice along with Kochi Pathar Jhol. In the desserts also, everywhere there is an authentic touch of Bengali culinary art. Chanar Payesh followed by Rasogolla, Chanar Sandesh and Rabri were all we had in desserts. It was one of the memorable dining experiences in my lifetime, not only for the superb and heavenly preparations but also for the hospitality and ambience.

Simply Sizzlers will just make you sizzle!

Awesome sizzlers at Simply Sizzlers will just make you sizzle! A gastronome would love to taste the savoury sizzlers at Simply Sizzlers, which are seasoned with aromatic herbs and spices. The best part is you get to eat everything hot and fresh. SimplySizzlers is one of the many food stalls that foodies love to visit in South City Mall. Situated right on the 3rd floor of the South City Mall, this food stall attracts a whole lot of food lovers every day. The only problem is it is hard to find a vacant table, especially on weekends when people throng on the 3rd floor of South City Mall to taste temping delicacies.  But, once comfortably seated you should surely taste some of the sizzlers offered at Simply Sizzlers.

The person manning the food counter is quite friendly and starts preparing your sizzlers the moment you place your order. He never fails to serve liberal chunks of potato, tomato and chicken pieces on your platter. I particularly like their roasted chicken sizzler and sizzling grilled masala bhekti which are just so delectable. Believe me you’ll always find a soft, juicy chicken piece seasoned with special spices or a generous piece of flavoured bhetki on your sizzler. Apart from these two delicacies, the presence of veggies such as potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage and some noodles, mixed in tangy sauce make the sizzler a complete and wholesome preparation. If you are a vegetarian you can try some veg mix grilled, paneer shashlik, corn & cheese ball and stuffed cottage cheese roll. Simply Sizzlers has some other delicious non-vegetarian delights in their menu. Though I did not get a chance to try their black pepper chicken, masala bhetki, sizzling jerk chicken and non-veg mixed grilled, I'm sure these items are equally lip smacking. Try some of their preparations someday and you'll surely know the difference.

With a meal for two costing Rs.500 approximately, eating out at Simply Sizzlers is not at all a pocket pinch for a food lover. So, enjoy your next meal at Simply Sizzlers!
