“Open Oven – A Decent Bakery with Fair Prices”

Rating – 3.5 out of 5

My last visit to Camac Street introduced me to the King of bakery and desserts there called the Open Oven. They make excellent desserts at decent prices. Their cakes are fresh and delicious. It is one of the better bakeries in town.

It is a nice place with polite and courteous staff. The ambience is just like any other bakery. They serve good desserts just like their namesake in Delhi.

After I came to know about Open Oven, Kolkata, I order cakes on all occasions here. I have become a big fan of their cakes and frequently visit this place. This is by far the most pocket friendly bakery I have ever visited.

Their Chocolate truffle cake and Butterscotch cake are undoubtedly the crown jewels of this confectionary shop. The truffle cake easily melts in your mouth giving a rich heavenly taste of pure chocolate. Being a die- hard chocolate fan, it suits my palate perfectly. The texture of this cake is very smooth and the chocolate truffle cream is heavenly. A hint of bitterness in the butterscotch cake along with their amazing icing decor adds a compliment to its taste.

The other cake options available there like Black Forest Gateaux, Chocolate cake, Coffee gateaux etc, are also popular though I have not tried them yet. In the pastries section, I am a big fan of their Black forest Pastry. Their chocolate truffle tart is also good.

Their chicken quiche and chicken croissant sandwich are exceptionally good and great for tea time or later in the evening. Their Paneer Patty and Lebanese roll are also fresh and well prepared.

Pretty much everything I have tried I liked. They also have pretty decent prices when compared to other bakeries.

Bhavesh Bhatia loves to taste various preparations at different restaurants and updates his blog regularly with restaurant reviews. He also updates his blog with other website content writing. So for any information on 100% original SEO content, get in touch with him.

"Kookie Jar Café – Not Worth The Money"

Rating: 1 out of 5

Kookie jar Café located at a fabulous location in Kolkata at Rawdon Street is one of the most visited café of the city. The décor of this café is nice and relaxed. It has an elegant seating arrangement, with warm focused lighting with sunlight gliding in – so far so good.

The food served is average but the service is very poor. They have ill trained, haughty and uncooperative staff. They delay a lot in getting orders served – and I mean a lot! The take away section of the Kookie Jar café is also quite busy and is pretty slow in taking orders. Interestingly, they serve many of the same dishes ready to eat on the ground floor as above, but the dishes took over an hour to be served when we went there on the third day after it had just opened the restaurant above!

The top floor of the café costs nearly 40% more and many things which were available downstairs are not available upstairs. There is a huge price difference in the menu of the top floor of the same café which is very rare and creepy.

Coming to the food, the food is decent but did not fulfill the expectations I had from Kookie Jar café. It’s a far cry from their other offering Mangio. The dessert served is pretty good but the continental, thai and Italian dishes served are disappointing. The roast chicken in their Onion Focaccia was moderate whereas their chicken stroganoff was downright depressing and distasteful. It did not taste anything like a Strognoff should. The pot pie is extremely unsatisfying and will not live up to your expectations. The side orders like cheese garlic bread and French fries are extremely overpriced. The mango smoothie is good but the Darjeeling tea served was pathetic with a Tata Tea Gold teabag dipped in it.

If you are a diehard Kookie Jar fan and you visit kookie jar café then you will be definitely disappointed with this place. The lack of service in such a high end café will disappoint you and the place also lacks warmth. The food leaves you with quite a lot to desire and the menu is excellent for burning a hole in your pocket. Give it a thought before visiting this place as visiting Kookie Jar’s Loudon outlet for desserts and bakes is a better and more pocket friendly option than visiting Kookie Jar Café.

KJ café is average but not worth the money, though it is located in an awesome place of Kolkata which will ensure that it does well anyway.

Dig into the delights of sandesh and doi @ Mithai

Rating: 4 out of 5

If you are a die-hard lover of sweet meats and yoghurts, explore all the sweet meat shops in the city but I bet you won’t find any such shop in the city that can come close to Mithai when it comes to misti doi, the most unique item of this store. There are many big names in the world of sweet meat stores in Kolkata like Balaram Mullick, Ganguram, Bancharam, Gupta Brothers and more, but when it comes to misti doi, Mithai is always right up there at the top.

I stay close by, and Mithai is a local sweet shop for me. Every morning, I find that the store is overcrowded with customers getting out of the shop with large packets of sweets and snacks from the store. By 12 noon, you will find that their shelves are almost empty with some less popular items still occupying a few trays. It’s the same in the evening. On some days, if you go and ask for Singharas at 6PM, they will say – ‘all sold out’. By 9 to 9.30 PM all the shelves are almost empty. Moreover, they never sell any leftovers; even if there are one or two items left, they offer them to the beggars at the end of the day before closing the store.

Now - coming to their hot listed items. Apart from misti doi, another unique item sold here is their bonde (bundi). Here, the bonde is totally different to look at. Light yellow with a crystal clear look. As I mentioned earlier, Mithai cannot be compared with any renowned sweet shops in Kolkata (neither in ambience nor in the wide variety of options they serve), but people still come from distant areas to try their sandesh’s. Sankha and padma are the only two designer styles they offer in sandesh apart from the normal square and round ones, though I am not a huge fan of these types. Though, they also offer rose, mango and elaichi flavored sandesh’s these are not the best here. In winter season, when fresh ‘gur’ (jaggery) comes into the market, they prepare Nolen Gurer Sandesh and Gur Rassogulla both of which are truly outstanding.

Owing to the huge popularity of the original store at Beck Bagan, Mithai has opened a second outlet at Gariahat a few years back, maintaining the same quality in both the outlets. If you haven’t been to Mithai yet, make sure that you visit the place soon because this store will never ever disappoint you (in quality or price).

Some titbits at The Street @ The Park!

Rating: 4 out of 5

Eating yummy sandwiches and hotdogs with a pint of wine in a plush hotel is a delightful experience in its own right. You feel relaxed and invigorated as the light music playing in the background transports you to a different world, and this is the reason why I would head to The Street at The Park if I wanted to relax after a hectic day. The dimly lit interiors (the only source of light being classy LEDs), the plush décor and the chequered flooring are a unique combination.  The place boasts of many street food counters, each offering something special.

I must say that places like The Street have modernized the concept of making and serving street food. The place is spotlessly clean and food is served in the most hygienic way. Here, you can savour a wide assortment of vintage wines and beer with a selection of some of the best wines in the country. Whenever I’m at The Street I prefer flaming fajita wrap (a yummy delicacy of fiery chicken and pepper wrapped in a tortilla), dodger dog (special hot dog with bacon, salsa, grilled onion, jalapenos) or mush puppy (served with cheddar melt, grilled mushrooms and pepper) with a glass of terzas altocab sauvignon blanc (Argentinean wine) or nivole moscato d'asti mischele chiarlo. It’s a heavenly experience!

One can settle for melon apple and ginger juice or a cappuccino along with mushroom and spinach crepes, stewed seasonal fruit pancakes or golden waffles if they’re looking for a snack. This luxurious eatery has excellent seating arrangements so you will not be left standing in a corner with your munchies and wine. Drop in here once for some of the best international street food in the city!

Indulge in yummy treats at The Donut Baker!

Rating: 3 out of 5

For a person who has a sweet tooth, it is indeed difficult to follow dietary restrictions, especially when it is matter of not indulging in sweets for long stretches of time. The world seems like hell and staying alive is a punishment! Due to some health problems (read lose weight), my doctors suggested that I should avoid sweet meats, cakes, pastries and cookies. Oh, what a painful existence it was! No sweets around, no cookies in hand, only got to stare while others ate!  Finally, when my health conditions improved and doctors gave me a green signal to indulge in sweet meats and desserts, the only place that I thought of visiting was Donut Baker.

Donut Baker has six outlets in Kolkata, but I choose to visit the one at 57, Park Mansion, Opposite Mocambo, Park Street, Kolkata, as it’s near my place.  After my six months of restrictions, I gorged on the best donuts in town. My all time favourites are chocolate bavarian, chocolate fantasy donuts, cappuccino, bluberry net, cookie crunch, chocolate fudge, double chocolate chip, chocolate sprinkle, white chocolate chip and chocolate bavarian.   I tried some of these at The Donut Baker outlet (the one at Park Mansion has got proper seating arrangement) and packed some for home. This time I also tried some other yummy delicacies- varied soft chocolate balls and other types of donuts like strawberry feast, smiley donuts with a yellow creamy layer on top, mango net (having a unique flavour of mango in it) and pista frost that tasted awesome!

Mama Mia – Not the same it used to be!

Rating: 1 out of 5

As I have a sweet tooth, I used to just head for any Mama Mia! outlet in Kolkata. If I remember, Mama Mia! has total seven outlets in Kolkata but my favourite hang-out joint is the one at Park Street near Music World.

What I love about Mama Mia! is the way their desserts are served to customers- the very sight of a gelato ice cream or sundae is just so irresistible. I have almost lost count the number of times I have eaten here over the years. Sadly the quality has really gone down. The last time we were here we tried some Tropical Fruit Burst (a succulent assortment of exotic tropical fruit topped with French Vanilla gelato and whipped cream), double chocolate twist (a yummilicious dessert made from Belgian chocolate mousse and accompanied with gelato [whichever one you want] and drizzled with chocolate sauce) and cafe mocha – none of them tasted nice at all except the double chocolate twist (no surprise there!).

Apart from the above, I have also tasted their other chocolate delicacies (being a great chocolate fan myself). I liked their muddy lava cake (a hot gooey mud cake with “chocolate lava" at the centre). You can have it with your choice of gelato. I did not like their chocolate overload (warm mud pie served with hot fudge, nuts, cream and your choice of gelato) as well as their sizzling brownies & gelato.

I would suggest – don’t visit this place unless you are a die-hard fan of their desserts. There are many better options out there these days.

Get your bagful of sweets from Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Growing up in Bengal, I always had a chance to dig into mouth-watering sweets meats, offered at local sweet shops.  But when I speak of sweet meats, the only name that crops up in my mind is of Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick. You can call them the most innovative sweet-meat makers, who experimented with a wide range of ingredients from gur (jaggery) to chocolates. Use of chocolate in Bengali sweets (popularised after the advertisement Cadbury and mishiti wedding) found their way into Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick outlets. Here, you will come across a whole lot of chocolate sweet-meats such as chocolate mud pie, chocolate spring roll, chocolate paan etc. You can call these fusion sweets made from cottage cheese as well as chocolates to tantalize your taste buds.

Since I am a die-hard fan of sandesh and kulfis, I make it a point to drop in at Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick at least twice a month. Apart from gorging a variety of sandesh every time, I just love to dig into their yummy mango doi, and malai rabri. Kesar kulfi and nolen gurer kulfi are my hot favourites. The best range here is easily their Nolun Gurer range of sweets. They are simply awesome and I have not found any other place that can give you Nolun Gur sweets virtually throughout the year.

If you cannot have sweets (out of compulsion or choice), you can still drop in at any Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick outlet to enjoy delectable dahi vada, raj kachori, papri chat, kachori chat, phuchka chat, phulkopir singara, kochuri, radhabollobi, dhakai porota, lachha paratha, dosas, uttapam, burger, idly, chowmein, chowmein & chilly paneer combo and sandwiches.  Visit any of the 4 Balaram Mullick & Radharaman Mullick outlets and enjoy their sumptuous spread any hour of the day!

Gorge on some tasty munchies and sweets at Tasty Corner!

Those who are raking their brains to find out where this food joint is located, let me help you out – it’s on 18, Anil Moitra Road, Mandeville Gardens, Kolkata. It is not surprising at all that a very few people know about this outlet. But Pathak Bhavan students and South Pointers are mad about this place. Why? Well, just try their samosas, kachoris, gulab jamuns and jalebis and you’ll know why.  My courtship days were filled with regular visits to Tasty Corner.

What makes Tasty Corner different from any ordinary sweet shop is its food quality. Whether it’s their hing kachori, khasta kachori, matar kachori or paneer kachori- all the items are immensely popular (though REALLY oily). My favourite was their hing kachori which was served with a delicious sabzi (vegetable curry) and sweet chutney. There are three varieties of curry you can have with your kachori - allu matar sabji, aludam or chollar dal. I always used to have my kachoris with allu matar. Apart from kachori, Tasty Corner offers some mouth watering samosas, dhokla and dahi vadas, which are students’ favourites.

I have a sweet tooth, so I never failed to try some of their luscious sweets. Their gajar ka halwa, moti pak, kalakand and gulab jamun are my all time favourite. Even now whenever I get time, I make sure I drop in at Tasty Corner to try their lip-smacking sweets and savouries.  Unlike other sweet shops, where you often get to eat stale sweets and savouries, people at Tasty Corner like to serve fresh munchies and sweets to their customers (something I really appreciate as a foodie). Fresh food is prepared every day since leftovers are served to beggars and needy people at the end of the day. Their policy is never to serve leftovers of the previous day to their customers, and that is what makes Tasty Corner a reputed sweet shop in the Ballygunge area (and in my book).

Drop in at Kookie Jar for some yummy delights!

Since I have a sweet tooth I am always on a lookout for yummy pastries, cakes and cookies in popular cake shops and pastry outlets. However, I can say for sure that I never appreciated the taste of real chocolate cakes and cookies till I tasted some at Kookie Jar as a kid.  I always experienced a feeling of great contentment after eating a lot of their cream cakes and pastries. I don’t mind gorging as many pastries and cakes as I can because delicacies prepared at Kookie Jar are always served fresh and never mar my appetite.

Kookie Jar prepares a whole lot of pastries and cream rolls. Try their chocolate nougat pastry, chocolate evasion pastry, chocolate truffle pastry and black forest pastry to know the real taste of pastries. I particularly like their mixed fruit pudding which just melts in the mouth. You can also go for their fudge brownie which is just so delectable! You can get the best cakes and gateaux at Kookie Jar. I simply love their black forest gateaux, chocolate truffle cake and mocha mousse cake. Their butterscotch cakes and rich chocolate cakes are always lip smacking. If you are not a fan of cream cakes, you can simply settle for tea cakes like chocolate marble cake, chocolate chip cake, chocolate chunk cake and cocoa fudge cake.
Kookie Jar also prepares a whole lot of savouries like cheese roll, chicken envelope, chicken mushroom puff, mutton patty, chicken tikka patty, spinach risotta puff, sandwiches, burgers and pizzas for those who cannot have or do not want to savour their sweet and yummy delights. Served hot and fresh, their mouth watering savouries are my favourite. If you want to take home freshly baked plain or flavoured bread you can get it from Kookie Jar.

Please note – the deli outlets are not to be confused with their KJ Cafe on Loudon Street. A separate review of my experience there last week for that cafe will follow soon.

Plunge into the pool of cakes, pastries and delicious snacks at Skyline Confectioners

I feel like jumping from the 10th floor of my building to dive into the pool of cakes, pastries and delicious snacks! You may be wondering, if I have gone crazy? And the answer is yes, I have gone crazy and anyone who loves confectioneries will go crazy when the person will have a confectionery store like Skyline Confectioners right at the opposite side of his or her home. Situated at 101/1A, Karaya Road, Kolkata-700019, Skyline Confectioners is a brand new snacks bar which has opened this July.

Located right in front of our 12 storey building, Skyline Confectioners always gives me a welcome call whenever I look out from my balcony. If you have been to famous confectioneries stores like Kookie Jar, Cakes and The French Loaf, you can definitely realize that you can savor the yummy desserts and snacks giving a good punch to your pocket and if you want to cut down your budget, you need to compromise with the taste. But, step into Skyline Confectioners once and see how they fill your mouth with heavenly and yummy confectioneries, exactly similar to the above mentioned renowned stores but at reasonable rate. The minimum price starts from Rs. 10. So now you imagine.

Fully vegetarian snacks bar, Skyline Confectioners offers an array of mouth watering snacks and yummy cakes, desserts, pastries and cookies. On the inaugural day, I visited the store to buy pastries and as soon as I entered, they welcomed by offering me to taste any pastry or dessert of my choice before I place any order. That heartiest welcome just swayed me away. Moreover, they also gifted me a box of chocolates. This warm welcome and a wonderful way to bid good bye with a box of chocolates won the hearts of every customer who visited there. After its inaugural I bought different eateries on different occasions. This September, I celebrated my brother’s and my father’s birthday with birthday cakes ordered from this store. On my brother’s birthday, I ordered Choco Fudge Cake and on my father’s birthday, we ordered Black Forest Cake. Both were amazing to taste, so soft and so yummy that you feel like having more and more until the last bite disappears in your mouth. And I don’t know whether you will believe or not, one pound cake costs only Rs. 260/-.

Besides these two special occasions, I visit the store frequently for Pizzas, Patties, Choco Tarts, Pastries and Sandwiches. Each of the items is prepared with delectable and eye-soothing culinary art. Fully air conditioned with friendly staffs, the store is small without any seating arrangement.
