Preview: 1st Women’s Singles Semi Final Match in Wimbledon 2012

After a series of exciting and challenging quarter final matches played among the tennis queens, the four semi-finalists are now ready to rock their semi final matches in this tournament. The first semi final match in Women’s Singles category is between Agnieszka Radwanska and Angelique Kerber. The third ranked Radwanska is in full form to take over eighth seeded Kerber to make a golden period in tennis for her country.

Agnieszka Radwanska is the first tennis queen from Poland to step into the Grand Slam semi final when she knocked down her Russian opponent, Maria Kirilenko in 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 score line in the quarter final to fix a spot in the semi final round. This win over the 17th ranked Russian has brought an end to her four years long frustration and has also helped her to regain her lost confidence. Since Wimbledon 2008, she has suffered eight losses in a row in different Grand Slam quarter finals which includes Wimbledon 2009, and three losses in Australian Open. So finally she has come out of the Grand Slam quarter final spell in this tournament to face the German lady for a position in the final.  In her way to this quarter final, she has not missed a single set but in the last eight, she lost the second set but finally sealed the third one to get through this error strewn match. The match took 7 and ½ hours to complete as it was delayed due to rain.

On the other hand, Angelique Kerber ousted her compatriot fifteenth seeded Sabine Lisicki in the quarter final in 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 set to set a match against third seeded Polish. Kerber is in full swing in this tournament and the way, she clashed down top seeded Maria Sharapova is something that can upset Radwanska in the upcoming match. Her consistency in the court is helping her to win these matches in a row. She has continued her campaign in this tournament with minimal errors. But surprisingly both these semi finalists, Radwanska and Kerber have lost one set during their quarter final match to set a meeting between the duo in the next round.

In their earlier encounters, they are tied in 2-2 and when they met the last time in Tokyo in 2011, the match was in favour of Radwanska where she won all the three sets. Both are equally competent to call for a position in the final but although Radwanska is the favorite in this match, Kerber’s superb form in the last few matches reveals that she is the only deserving candidate.
