Just a few days to go and the Olympics 2012 will grab the
attention of the entire world. Starting on July 25, 2012, this event will
continue till August 12, 2012 featuring three dozen games. On the first day of
this historic sports event, a set of women’s football matches have been
scheduled and the first one is between the host country, Great Britain and New
Zealand which will be played at the Millennium Stadium. This match will start
at 16.00 hours GMT.
In Group E, besides the host nation, there are three more
countries, New Zealand, Cameroon and Brazil. Brazil has always been placed in
the top four positions in this category in previous four occasions. But they
have never won the Olympics gold. In 2004 and 2008, they won the silver being
the runners up team and in 2000 and 1996, they occupied the fourth position.
However, this time they are the only team in this group to end the Olympics as
a No. 4 team.
Among these four teams, the winner of this group will be in
the quarter finals to play against the third qualifier from Group F and Group
G. Great Britain’s Women’s Football team is participation in this event for the
first time and since they are the host nation, they got an easy entry in this
event without going through any qualifying round. This team has reached the
playoffs of Fifa Women’s World Cup in 2011 and lost to France in that round.
But in recent times, this team has been playing quite impressively to create
some marking in this Olympics. The team coach Hope Powell is quite confident
with her team and she is hopeful that in the inaugural match, England will maintain
their dominance over the New Zealand to prevail over them.
On the other hand, the Kiwis are comparatively in a leading
position with respect to England on the basis of their earlier appearances in
this sports event. In 2008, New Zealand Women’s Football team participated in
the Olympics for the first time and they ended their campaign from the group
stage with a single point from a draw match against Japan. This time they
played the pre-Olympic qualifying match against Papua New Guinea and defeated
their opponents in an outstanding way in 15-0 score line to make their way to
London Olympics 2012. Sarah Gregorius became the star of the match scoring
three goals. The Kiwi Coach Tony Readings is happy with his team girls and is
looking forward to be the group topper.
