The Women’s Singles category is the first one in Wimbledon
2012 to set up its quarter final matches. The first match in this category is
between third seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and World No. 17 Maria Kirilenko. This
match will be held on July 3, 2012 at 10.30 PM.
In the fourth round, Agnieszka Radwanska outsmarted her
unseeded opponent Camila Giorgi in a straight set victory in 6-2, 6-3 score
line. This has made her to fix a spot in the final eight where she set a match
against Maria Kirilenko who guaranteed her position in the quarter final after
clashing down Shuai Peng in the fourth round in an impressive way. Now it is to
see, who gets her one step ahead to the semi-final.
In her long run to this quarter final, this Polish lady has
not dropped one set and compared to other female contenders for this round, she
has undoubtedly moved through the easiest track to book a spot here. Now her
rival is Kirilenko whom she had defeated four times in 2010 but in these two
years Kirilenko has turned into a solid player to take revenge. However, in
this tournament, Radwanska is looking ahead for stepping into her first Grand
Slam semi final because she is the only player in first ten world ranking who
has not yet stepped into any Grand Slam semi-final. So far she has passed
through a smooth way but now she is under pressure because this win will make a
record in her tennis career but will also inch her position in world ranking.
If she makes through this round, she will set a semi-final match against Kerber
or Lisicki. So a golden opportunity lies in front of her.
On the other hand, Maria Kirilenko slammed China’s last hope
in Wimbledon 2012 when she crushed down Shuai Peng in 6-1, 6-7 (8/6), 6-3 set
in just 2 hours and 20 minutes. This Russian had made her last Grand Slam
quarter final in 2010 in Australian Open and after that this is her second
appearance in Grand Slam final eight. In the final set, she made a 3-2 lead
which has made her way to the next round. In this three set match, she has
committed a dozen mistakes whereas her quarter final opponent has committed
only 6 which has placed her in a leading position in the upcoming match. These
two players have never confronted in grass ground before and so this can affect
the outcome of this match.
Whatever be the
result in this upcoming match, both of them will again face very soon in
Olympics 2012.
