Buzz: A perfect place to go while satisfying your taste buds with all you want to eat!

Chinese and Tibetan delicacies are my all time favorite. So whenever I get a chance, I love to discover new food joints serving authentic Chinese or Tibetan preparations. A few days ago, three of us, my two friends and I were on our way to Metro Plaza and we found Buzz at Ho Chi Minh Sarani near American Consulate. We soon made up our minds to sit and dine there while returning from Metro Plaza and accordingly did just that.

The place is cozy with a quiet and familiar ambience. Three of us soon took our seats, discussing the day’s spoils. Soon, the waiter came and gave us the menu card. The prices of every food item here are reasonable and pocket friendly. For appetizers, we ordered Chicken Sweet Corn Soup and Chili Pepper Chicken, and for the main course, we chose Chicken American Chopsuey, Chicken Thukpa, Chicken Steamed Momo’s and Shredded Chicken with Cashew and Mushroom. The starters were served quickly and we literally jumped into the Chili Pepper Chicken due to its culinary look and flavor. Soup is generally decent everywhere but this one was just awesome. Both chilly and pepper were nice blended with the chicken and the flavor was prominent in every bite of the chicken. While we were on the last legs of the starter, the Momo’s was served. I love momos, so I was the first person to take one from the plate. The taste resembles perfect Tibetan flavor but the chicken stuffing is very less.  Instead of chicken, you will mostly find onion and other ingredients. As we were finishing the Momo’s, other items were served, which were quite good. The American Chopsuey was incredible. Delicious with a long lasting sweetness! Though the Momo’s disappointed me a lot but overall I liked this place. Apart from momo’s, other preparations were good enough to pull me here once more- especially the Chopsuey.

After a grand meal, we paid around Rs 600/- for three which is quite nominal for tasting so many items. The place is quite good for sitting and dining with all its yummy yummy Chinese and Tibetan delicacies.

I wonder how two outlets of SAIMA can be so different?

Saima is a North Indian restaurant with two outlets, one at Little Russel Street and another at Chowringhee Road behind Rabindra Sadan Metro Station. The first time I visited this food joint, I was not so disappointed as I was when I visited the Little Russel Street outlet. The ambience there is not appealing, but the restaurant has a small but proper seating arrangement on its first floor. I was there with one of my friends on my way home from office. When we reached there, there was only a couple dining there. So, among the four remaining tables there, we took one. We placed an order for Chicken Biriyani and Chicken Bharta. Prices are reasonable - Biriyani @ Rs. 80 only is unimaginable nowadays. Our orders were served almost instantly. The biriyani was not as awesome as Arsalan or Zeeshan - so so. Chicken Bharta was quite good, but nothing awesome; nothing to talk about and not too appealing. This outlet did not disappoint me at least because you can’t expect something out of the world at such reasonable rates.

Being satisfied with Saima at Little Russel Street, within a few days of visiting there, I planned to check out their Chowringhee Road branch which I have often found overcrowded with people while returning home from office in the evening. I was there with the same company. We moved upstairs to sit and dine. As we were upstairs, the ambience shocked me. A food joint cannot have such unhygienic ambience, dirty tables, untidy walls and an awful ceiling. But still I saw more people here than Little Russel Street (perhaps due to the location). We placed the same order here as well, but when the food was served - my god, I lost my appetite! No properly cleaned plates and spoons and the taste was appalling - a total waste of money. We wasted a lot of the food as it was just impossible for us to have food at such an untidy food joint. However, it was our fault we choose this place, so we had to pay the bill. When we paid the bill and were about to leave, the staff member who served us almost forced us to pay him tips. They are not only untrained and unfriendly staff but also ill mannered.  This dine-out was a shocking experience for me.

Dawat-e-Arsalan!

Residing at the East of Kolkata, one gets ample access to the famous Mughlai and Chinese food joints of the city, be it ‘Shiraz’, ‘Zeeshan’ or ‘Beijing’. So when it came to reviewing ‘Arsalan’ Restaurant’s main branch, I gladly welcomed it. Now, why did I mention the other three eateries if I am to review the fourth one? The answer is pretty simple. Since 2002 when Arsalan started operatiing, it has axed the popularity of the former three. Arsalan serves Mughlai as well as Chinese delicacies but it is best known for its penchant in Mughlai dishes.

I went there to find out exactly why people preferred it to the others.

Situated at one of the busiest crossings of Kolkata, the Park Circus seven point crossing; Arsalan can be surely tagged as one of the landmarks here. The first thing to catch the eye is its name and the abundant space inside. It has nothing to do with the interior decor. After I had a chat with the owner I got to know that more than anything they are concerned about the quality of food they serve. According to him, people go to a restaurant for eating not to see its decor. If the food is good they will visit it again. Still, if someone prefers good interiors and food with equal interest they should seat themselves on the first floor of this joint.
Mughlai food is known for its richness. It is famous for the exotic use of spices, dry fruits and nuts with style and splendor. Here, the dishes start from a mere 80 bucks and can shoot up to as much as 7000! The dishes include Biriyani, Kababs, Tandoori, Noodles, Soup and much more, but the dish which I liked most was their ‘Kakori Kabab’. Made with mince meat, it’s so tender that it simply melts in your mouth, flavored with god knows what spices! Who cares when you are eating such delicious food!

Arsalan opens at 12 PM and serves customers till 1.30 AM on normal days. During festivities it remains open till 4 AM.I have personally never seen the entrance of this food joint deserted whenever I have walked past the place.

Am I being biased that I didn’t find anything to negate? Well, there are a few negative points as well. If you plan to visit this place, you better travel by public transport because finding parking is near impossible. Get something to pass your time in the queue; it may take as long as 45 minutes to get your order served!
But I think the people of Kolkata are still crazy foodies or else this food joint wouldn’t have run this well for 11 years with its 4 branches (one situated at Mumbai)!

PANNA'S KITCHEN – Decent food but it has many drawbacks

A plan to have a delightful lunch or dinner really can be possible in PANNA'S KITCHEN. If you are a lover of fast food and delicious North Indian food, your destination should be none other than 4/N D.H Road, Behala, Kol-34. Panna's kitchen is near Behala tram depot. A short review of Panna's Kitchen shows that it accept credit cards, which will be a great help for most people who prefer transactions through credit cards. Another plus point of this restaurant is that it is just beside Diamond Harbour road, so while passing through you can easily spent some time there in their Air conditioned room and enjoy the real taste of North Indian thick tasty gravies and mouth watering delicious fast food.

But Panna's Kitchen does not accept food coupons. It does not offer Home Delivery. Other modern amenities are also missing here. All these are some of the negatives of this restaurant. If the restaurant can start accepting food coupons, then it will attract many food lovers from far and near. The unavailability of home delivery is one of the major drawbacks of this restaurant  Many people cannot go to a restaurant and eat there, and many other people don’t like to sit in a restaurant and spent their precious time eating there, as it is much easier to order food on the phone. But as this facility is not available here, it is a great problem for those who want to eat packed food directly at home. It is also a loss for the restaurant as they are unable to reach lots and lots of people who want home delivery. Panna's Kitchen also does not have any car parking facility, which makes it far more inaccessible than any other big restaurant  (take for example YO FOODIES at High land park, Kolkata). Most of the top restaurants have a parking lot which proves a great help for those who have a car. Another major drawback of Panna's Kitchen is that it cannot satisfy those who are vegetarian. Panna's Kitchen does not have many vegetarian food options. In Kolkata, there are a large number of people who are  purely vegetarian and don’t like non-veg  food. Panna's Kitchen proves a great failure in this field.

There are many drawbacks of this restaurant, located at 4/N Diamond Harbour road in Behala. Avoid it unless you live close by.

A bitter experience at Tandoor Park

When you are served stale food in a restaurant you just feel like throwing a fit and blacklisting the restaurant by letting other diners know about the horrendous food there. At least, that’s how I felt when I was served rotten chicken and stale fried rice at Tandoor Park. Located on Gariahat Road, Tandoor Park is a restaurant cum bar that offers both Chinese and north Indian dishes. The cost of each item is a bit expensive compared to other restaurants in the same locality. But, if you compare Tandoor Park’s food quality with the other restaurants, you’ll probably give Tandoor Park 1star or 2 stars for serving stale, cold and rotten food to their guests.

It was during the Pujas 2 years back when we dropped in here to have our lunch. Tired after pandal hopping the whole day, we slouched on the cushioned chairs (I must say that Tandoor Park has a nice ambience) and placed our orders. We ordered some chicken butter masala, egg fried rice and chicken reshmi kebabs …and what awful food we had at Tandoor Park! The egg fried rice looked unappetizing. The reshmi kebabs were bitter and tasted awful. We tasted some chicken butter masala and it was just sickening! Those guys had served us rotten chicken in stale gravy.  We understood that we would surely fall ill if we ate their stale food. We complained about the rotten chicken butter masala, which was taken away, but they didn’t care to replace it with a fresh one.  What a bitter experience we had on such an auspicious day!

We finished our fried rice and kebabs half heartedly. We didn’t feel like paying our bills, but we had eaten some fried rice and kebabs and had to pay for those. Each item was unreasonably charged and we hated paying so much for such unappetizing, sickening and tasteless food, but what to do! It was our bad luck. I would suggest never enter this restaurant or else you’ll burn a hole in your pocket and get to eat only horrible meals.

Mirch Masala Restaurant & Bar, find out whether it is a roadside dhaba or restaurant?

Have you ever dined in a dhaba located on the highway? Well, never mind if you haven’t got a chance to dig into the mouthwatering food of a roadside dhaba. You can find a similar ambience and enjoy truly delectable north Indian and Moghlai dishes at Mirch Masala Restaurant & Bar. The quirky ambience of Mirch Masala, located at Gariahat Road truly makes it a perfect dining hub.

Gariahat, with so many apparel and bric-a-brac shops, is a shopper’s paradise. And I, being a perfect shopaholic, am often seen on the streets, bargaining and stuffing my bags with good buys. Just a few months back I got a chance to eat at Mirch Masala. Tired after our shopping spree, my friend and I entered this restaurant for some refreshments. But, its typical dhaba décor enhanced by colorful posters had its magical effect on us and we decided to have our luncheon here.

When you are sitting in a dhaba or rather when you get a feel of sitting in a dhaba, then it is always nice to dig in to some delectable north Indian dishes. We ordered some hara lasuni naan, Kashmiri kuchcha, subzi dum biryani, tandoori murgh and murgh lasuni. After this sumptuous meal, we made sure we had a glassful of sweet lassi (served at almost every highway dhaba). My friend insisted on having some Kesariya Jalebis, which were just awesome!

I must say that their service was indeed praiseworthy. On entering the restaurant we were greeted by their friendly staff who showed us to our table. The waiters were prompt and efficient. Food was served to us hot and fresh in metal bowls and plates. Who would believe that one could get the feel of a roadside dhaba on bustling Gariahat road! Mirch Masala has a separate bar for those who would prefer having hard drinks along with their sumptuous delicacies. Just drop in here next time when you are on Gariahat Road!

Bazeegar, really the champion

Do you want to enjoy a sumptuous dinner or a delicious luncheon at a nice restaurant without burning a hole in your pocket? Well, just drop in at Bazeegar on Central Road, (beside Cube Centre) Jadavpur. Tucked up in a corner of an alley, Bazeegar is one of the affordable and good restaurants in South Kolkata. If you have a few hundred rupees in your pocket and cannot afford to eat in an expensive food joint, you can easily enjoy a delicious meal at Bazeegar. While studying at Jadavpur University, we (my friends and I) were always on the lookout for some inexpensive restaurant where we could enjoy lip-smacking north Indian and Chinese dishes at nominal rates.

We have eaten in Bazeegar many times. The place is small and cozy and has a nice ambience. What makes Bazeegar different from any mediocre restaurant is its quality food. Sometimes we used to drop in there to enjoy some tasty snacks. Bazeegar offers some mouthwatering chicken cutlet, chicken lollypop, fish fry, fish butter fry and prawn balls. I particularly like their chicken biryani, red hot kaichi chicken, red hot pepper chicken and tandoori chicken. What else do you want when you can get delicious food in good quantities at very reasonable prices! Bazeegar also has a takeaway facility. Just place your order and get your steaming hot food parcels within half an hour!

Bazeegar has a special provision in their menu card - their office pack or home pack.  You can either get a non-veg food pack or a veg food pack at nominal rates. This place is perfect for all office goers and students, who look for food joints that offer mouthwatering tiffin packs at reasonable rates.  The next time you are near the Jadavpur area and feel ravenously hungry do not hesitate to enter this restaurant and try their mouthwatering delicacies!

Beijing Restaurant @ Tangra- a small China in Kolkata

Rarely do you get to visit a restaurant in Kolkata that offers authentic Chinese cuisine at very nominal rates. Yes Beijing Restaurant, located at Christopher Road, Tangra, Kolkata, is one restaurant where you can enjoy a plateful of authentic and mouthwatering Chinese delicacies at reasonable prices.  Exactly one year ago, I dined in this restaurant with some close relatives of mine. After enjoying our day at Science City and Nicco Park, we decided to take the road that led to Tangra. Tangra has a whole lot of Chinese eateries, most of which offer delicious and authentic Chinese dishes. And most important all, you do not burn a hole in your pocket while enjoying a three-course meal in most of these Chinese food hubs.

Beijing is one of the oldest and most popular Chinese restaurants in Kolkata. We got there in the evening. Voraciously hungry, we placed our orders, which included a-la carte meal- dimsums, soups, main course and yummy desserts. We had spring button mushrooms, chicken dumplings and spring prawns with Lung Fung Chicken Soup. Each item was awesome! Within forty five minutes of serving our dimsums and soups, the waiters arrived with steaming hot food. For our main course, we ordered some Cantonese chicken, Szechwan duck, chicken in black bean sauce, Chicken American Chopsuey and Chicken Cantonese rice. Served in good quantity, the food at Beijing restaurant was hot and delicious! The spices, sauces and herbs perfectly blended in each item, emitting a delicious aroma to excite our taste buds! Finally, the waiter arrived with our yummy dessert – a black forest sundae and Chocó brownies. The soft brownies and the ice cream melted in our mouths, leaving a lasting sweetness.

However, there are some disadvantages in dining at Beijing restaurant. If you plan to dine there, then avoid taking your car. Finding a proper car parking lot nearby is truly hazardous. I did not like the ambience of the restaurant. The dimly lit area looked unclean. But their food was really awesome. Overall, it is a nice place to enjoy authentic Chinese food at pocket-friendly prices.

Rose: One of my favorite restaurants which I preferably don’t miss out on during the weekends

We usually get a break from our office or our other diurnal work during the weekend, and feel like doing something which we like. I love visiting restaurants and dining out there with my family. In spite of visiting many restaurants in Kolkata, I personally like ‘ROSE’ the most.  It stands very true to its name. Their heart-winning satisfactory service to their visitors is why I probably don’t feel like dropping it out from the list of my favorite restaurants.

A restaurant is said to be a good one if the following things are positive in it.

Firstly, it should serve its customers with extraordinarily tasty food.

Secondly, it should be cost effective so that anyone can visit it at times with their family without checking their wallet several times and having second thoughts before going.

Thirdly, it should be hygienic enough with clean utensils, clean tables and well dressed clean waiters who are serving the food.

Fourthly, a restaurant should have a standard look and should suit your living standards well.

Fifthly, it should have quick service. The service of the restaurant should not be poor and make you wait for the ordered food to come for a long time so you literally start starving. The reason why I am emphasizing on the qualities of a good restaurant is because ‘Rose’ has all of them. The soul pleasing taste of the food, the extra-ordinarily quick service of hot and yummy food, the gorgeous look of the restaurant and the other plus factors pull me towards it.

Another thing which I like about ‘ROSE’ is their restrictions with the dress code. This also hikes their standards and symbolizes its loyalty. You ought to be well dressed up in formals before entering. Casual dressing will stop you from getting entry here. Rose also has a branch on the opposite footpath which mainly serves snacks and has recently started with meals as well. It’s not that I have never visited any other restaurant for meals with my family other than this, but I strongly feel that I can visit ‘ROSE’ without getting bored of the taste of its food. So, if you haven’t visited them, do so the next time you dine out with your family. It is located at Kankurgachi opposite Pantaloons.

Damur, a grand Chinese and North Indian food plaza at Dalhousie

I am surprised to see that no one has reviewed this superb restaurant, located in one of the busiest heritage business centers of Kolkata, yet. Located at 7, Old Court House Corner, Dalhousie, BBD Bagh in Kolkata, Damur is a fabulous restaurant I discovered near my work place a few months ago. My office colleagues and I planned a lunch party at Damur to celebrate the farewell of one of our colleagues.

Damur is a complete Chinese and North Indian restaurant with a wide range of preparations available in their menu. As most of the buildings in this area looks like century old heritage buildings, one should not judge its outer appearance. Around 1.00 PM, we reached in front of the restaurant - an old building with the name ‘Damur’ shining brightly and elegantly. As we stepped inside by opening a small door, the interior decor with soft light simply amazed us. The outer and inner appearance was just contrasting. The doorman welcomed our group and asked us to go upstairs to the second floor. The entire stair case was beautifully decorated. As we reached the second floor, one of the waiters approached towards us and guided us to a table of six. The six of us sat comfortably on our chairs.

In our group, there was one vegetarian. So, for the appetizer, we ordered two Chicken Sweet Corn Soup and Chicken Thai, one Chicken Noodles Soup and one Mushroom Noodles Soup. These were followed by two plates of Dry Chilli Chicken, one plate of Drums of Heaven and Crispy Chilli Babycorn. With all these superb dishes, we initiated our grand lunch party. As it was a weekday and that also in the afternoon, there was not much crowd in the large dining hall. Most of the tables were empty. As far as I remember, three more tables were occupied other than ours and we enjoyed our privacy. Every preparation was delicious. In the meantime, we placed our orders for the main course and beverages. Each of us opted for Lime Soda Water. And for the main course, we mixed and matched between North Indian and Chinese items. We tried one plate of Mixed Hakka Noddles and Mixed Fried Rice, both without pork, Peas Pulao, Butter Naan, Dal Makhani, Paneer Butter Masala, Garlic Chicken and Szechwan Chicken.

All the Chinese preparations that we savored were awesome. But truly speaking, I didn’t like their Dal Makhani and Butter Naan - probably because I don’t prefer those, though others appreciated them. We had a great and memorable lunch party at Damur at an affordable price. After such a lavish and enjoyable meal, the bill came to nearly Rs. 200 per head.

Chowman

Tucked away in a tiny corner in Golf Green, Chowman offers some tasty Chinese and Thai cuisine. Looking for a nice food joint nearby, we (my friends and I) accidently dropped in at this restaurant one afternoon. To be very frank, we were not happy with their seating arrangements. Although Chowman has a nice ambience and on entering you are greeted by friendly waiters, this restaurant lacks adequate space. At the most, ten people can sit in it comfortably. If you are the 11th one, you have to wait in a queue for your turn. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait. There were a few people and we (3 of us) were given a table.

Frankly speaking, we didn’t expect awesome food, especially after taking a look at their limited seating arrangements. But, we were proven wrong after 45 minutes. Voraciously hungry, we ordered some Manchow soup and for starters we had we had Schezwan Chilli baby corn and chilli shrimps. To our surprise, the soup as well as the starters tasted amazingly good. The spices were nicely blended to excite our taste buds. Finally, our sumptuous lunch arrived in hot bowls. Our main course consisted of mixed fried rice, chilli garlic rice and wok tossed hakka noodles (chicken), hunan chicken and Cantonese Chicken and fish Pak choi. The food was delicious; we were left licking the last morsels from our plates. All these items were served by well mannered waiters who promptly responded to our calls.

I know Chowman at Golf Green lacks space so if you plan to dine with your family then better not come here. You will have to stand in a long queue, waiting for your turn.  But, you can surely drop in at Chowman’s forty- seater, air-conditioned restaurant at 99 Ballygunge Place.

Believe me! Try their delicious Chinese and Thai dishes once and you’ll leave the restaurant licking your fingers!

Walk into Hongkong Express to get the authentic flavor of Chinese dishes ending with Darsaan

I am a food lover and I always prefer tasting dishes at different restaurants, cafes and snacks bars, regardless of how big or small the place is. In the Gariahat area, I have been at many restaurants (both big and small ones) but I was unaware of Hongkong Express, located on 70 B, Purna Das Road, Hindustan Park in Kolkata.

Recently, one or two months back, I discovered an amazing offer flashing on Crazeal’s website for dining at Hongkong Express: “A meal for two for Rs. 850/- is available for only Rs. 299/-.” I soon grabbed the offer and went there with my best friend for a lunch the next weekend to explore this Chinese and Thai world. Very close to Triangular Park, Gariahat, we did not face any hassles in finding our destination. As we entered, we felt the calmness and silence of the place. Simple but sophisticated, the interior decor is fully influenced by Chinese artwork. The manager (who is probably Chinese) greeted us with a warm welcome. Although we understood his English accent his gestures were totally different from what we generally come across in Kolkata.

While placing the order, the waiter assisted us with the best options that we could have. For starters, we ordered Crispy Fried Chilly Chicken, and then for the main course, we chose Mixed Triple Schezuan Rice and Chicken in Chilly Oyster Sauce. After a long time, I got the authentic flavor of Chinese dishes sitting in Kolkata. Their triple Schezuan Rice was a totally new item for both of us and we enjoyed having it. Their Triple Schezuan Rice is a mixture of three different types of ingredients: rice, fine noodles and thick noodles. Our meal ended with Darsaan, a special kind of dessert which includes our well known sweet dish, ‘gaja’ served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. This dessert topped the menu list that was served for us. A perfect combination of authentic Indian dessert and ice-cream, the hot ‘gajas’ were amazing to taste with frozen ice-cream.

Our stomachs were full and we had very little space for Darsaan but its heavenly taste did not allow us to waste any of it. We took our time, relaxed and finished it and my mouth waters even today remembering that superb and delicious dessert. I will love to go back to Hongkong Express many times in the future and if others are also planning to explore this gastronomic enclave don’t miss their Darsaan.

Krishna Ke Darbar Se

The recently opened food joint Govinda`s offers a religiously sumptuous treat for the vegetarian food lovers of the city.  Inaugurated on the eve of Janmashtami by famous Tollywood Actress Swastika Mukherjee, this restaurant is a wonderful amalgamation of both Indian and worldly cuisines. The restaurant on the Iskcon Temple premises where Lord Krishna is devoutly worshipped serves a large variety of cuisines and offers some of the best buffet deals as well. Not just the ambience but even the quantity and quality of their food will melt your heart. Located in the heart of the city at 11,Ho Chi Minh Sarani (the lane opposite Birla High School for Boys) this restaurant offers South Indian, North Indian, Chinese, Mexican, Italian and Continental food but one must try their Veggie Platter and Mexican dosas with different fillings to get a complete experience. The weekend Buffet Deals are also quite pocket friendly at Rs.99 per person and offer good portions of Starters, Main Course and Desserts.

But what they completely lack in is the service as the order might take more than 30 minutes to be served and the timings of the restaurant also will not suit everyone as the food joint shuts down at 10PM sharp. Another thing that did not suit my taste buds was the over-experimental menu where one can get confused about what to eat and what not to, and the lack of Valet Parking may also disappoint you.

However, Mr.Amarnath Desai the GM of the restaurant “promises to improve the services and give a contented experience” to the visitors. My overall experience was not that bad as their range of Eggless desserts were to die for  and with a sweet tooth I recommend trying out Govinda`s this weekend  if you want a taste of pure and sinful vegetarian delicacies and chanting ‘Hare Ram! Hare Krishna!’ (if you do not mind waiting really long) where a meal for two should cost approximately Rs.600.

Afza, a new destination for North Indian dishes, especially Biriyani

Cuddling in the heart of the so called ‘Biriyani para’ of this city, Afza is a new name in the list of famous Mughlai houses situated in Park Circus area. Located at 82, Jhowtala Road, Kolkata, a few steps away from Our Lady Queen of the Mission school, this 2-3 years old hotel cum restaurant includes both North Indian and Chinese cuisines in its menu chart.

A perfect place, spacious and well decorated to hang out with friends or to plan a family dinner, one will get a wide variety of choices at Afza’s menu chart to satiate their taste buds. After it started off, I have been there quite a number of times for dine-in and once or twice I have placed the order for home delivery. This dining hub is very close to my place and so whenever I feel the urge to dine out; this is always the first option for me. As of date, I have always been there with my friends and every time I have been there, I opted for North Indian cuisine except once when I ordered Chinese.

The north Indian cuisine here is simply awesome here and as I am a regular diner at nearby Zeeshan and Arsalan, comparison comes automatically, and on that comparative scale, this younger Afza is in no way inferior to well known Zeeshan and Arsalan. And why only me, any diner who has tasted North Indian preparations at Afza will agree with me because this gastronomic enclave leaves no space for dissatisfaction when it comes to their service, hospitality and preparations.

For starters, my all time favorite is either Chicken Tandoori or Chicken Reshmi Kabab which is followed by their yummy ChickenBiriyani. Afza prepares all these with its chef’s special touch which gives a superb taste to the preparations to delight the hearts of every diner. Their biriyani is a superb and heavenly combination with Chicken Bharta or Chicken Butter Masala. Every time I satisfied my appetite with Afza’s North Indian dishes, I have always gone home delighted. But once I tasted the Chinese when I was there with my building friends and I was very disappointed. We ordered Crispy Chilli Baby Corn, followed by Chicken Chowmein and Garlic Chicken but all of these were not up to the mark. We also felt that the Baby Corn item was not fresh.

So when I can give 10/10 points for Afza’s North Indian preparations, I will give it only 1/10 for the Chinese ones. I must say that Afza is basically a specialist in North Indian cuisine and if anyone has a plan to dine in here during the festive season, try North Indian and I am sure you will love to return again and again.

Kubay is best known for its Seafood cuisine. It still continues to serve up delicious and honest- to- goodness coastal fare its always been known for. There are no frills at this eatery that occupies a sparse room and no more.I found the service prompt and the waiters are ever helpful with their comments on the various dishes and their popularity amongst the diners. The seafood is the most popular order here and they do it in many styles viz. Butter Garlic Squid, Masala Prawns, excellent Fried Fish and more. The Manglorean Fish Curry  goes beautifully with Neer Dosa. They also do mouthwatering Pork Vindaloo which is served with Sannas or Idiappam or Panpole and equally they also do the most delicious of Masala Prawns.I also tried their Stuffed Crab cooked in a typical Coorgi style with added grated coconut and coconut milk. Found it to be a bit different from how we Bengalis cook yet a novel idea and delicious- not too spicy or pungent! For Dessert,if someone has a sweet tooth, they can order for Home Made Caramel Custard!

The interiors are well done up, with Aquariums and the walls depicting the Marine Life! Wonderful and has a calming effect! The lights are muted and there is the least of cluttering sounds! Good to visit for all age groups!

If you have a crush for a seafood fare then visit Kubay when in Bengaluru which is also easy on your pocket - the cost for 2 is only Rs.450 which is great value for money! Since my cousin stays at Koramangala, I make it a point to visit Kubay and I just enjoy seafood fare a lot!

Kubay also does home delivery in and around Koramangala, Madivala,100 ft road ,passport Office  and the list of places can be found from the Manager at the desk. I suggest that a branch should be opened at Kolkata and the rest of India!

Come and enjoy your lunch or dinner at Sher-e-Punjab

There stands a restaurant on the Mumbai Road. The eatery is a big one named Sher-e-Punjab standing bang on the Highway. It is crowded every time we visit as people dine or have lunch there while they’re either on the way or return from a trip.

On entering the restaurant you will find a large spacious lawn where men sit for drinks. There is a family corner where families can enjoy Punjabi cuisine. Previously, only Punjabi cuisine was available but nowadays this restaurant has transformed into a multi-cuisine one serving all sorts of varieties ranging from Indian, Chinese and Moghlai. After the food is ordered you will get a welcome drink at no extra cost. People watch television while the children play in a shaded space. The excellent ambience inside the restaurant will relax you. The air-conditioned atmosphere would make you feel sleepy and but the welcome drink might energize your spirits.

The food is served hot and fresh from starters to the main course. The children too will not have any problem because the food is less spicy and served hot. The lip-smacking tadka is something which you can enjoy here with thin-papery rotis. This is a very popular main course dish for any Punjabi meal. The Chinese food is also delicious. Since I have not got the chance to taste their Moghlai dishes so cannot comment about them. The service is prompt and people will be around to give proper service. There are about one hundred seats arranged in different ways to make the eating orderly and systematic. The delicious taste of Punjabi and Chinese food will make you feel like visiting the restaurant often.

The only drawback of the restaurant is that they do not accept cards and have to pay cash. When the world believes in plastic money, Sher-e-Punjab with its excellent service should also change to accept cards along with cash.

The Indian restaurant at Saffron- The Park rocks!

It had been a wish of mine since my college days to get inside The Park coffee shop and dine as well as to get the feel of the place, but I had to wait for the right moment. The moment when I got the salary from my first job .The day finally came, and trust me, holding my first earned money was a different feeling altogether. I decided to make the day a memorable one. I took my family out for dinner at this cool restaurant, Saffron - The Park.

The doorkeeper opened the door for us with a greeting ‘salaam saab’ (Indian way of saying hello). We entered. I was totally dazzled by the charm of its beauty. The lights reflecting all over gave the restaurant a magnificent look. It was indeed beautiful. Our table was already booked in advance. A lady in a black saree greeted us with a smile and guided us to our table. We sat comfortably on the cushion fitted chairs. Low power lights were hanging over the table making it look so pleasant. Beautiful wall hangings adorned the walls. We placed our order - the special for the day, a Rajhasthani thali.

While we waited for the food, I began to look around. There were so many happy faces around. People with their family and friends were enjoying their meals. The in-house band was playing a wonderful tune making the atmosphere serene. The food arrived. The waiter placed the shiny silver plates over the red tablecloth and served us the food with a smile. It’s needless to say that the meal was delicious. It was indeed a very pleasant experience dining over there with my family. And I can happily say now it was worth the wait!

Chelo Kebabs only at Peter Cat

Peter Cat, a renowned restaurant in Kolkata is a foodie’s haven. You can dig into mouthwatering Continental and North Indian cuisines without emptying your pockets. Rush to this place if you are ravenously hungry, and when your taste buds crave for juicy meat, seasoned with herbs and spices! What makes Peter Cat famous among people is their succulent Chelo Kebabs, a sumptuous dish of buttered rice served hot with tomatoes, poached egg, mutton dumplings and mutton kebabs. Delicious and nutritious, this dish is enough to satiate your hunger anytime. I heard a lot about Peter Cat’s chelo kebabs from my relatives and friends. This is one reason why I decided to have my lunch there one fine afternoon.

On entering the restaurant, I was greeted with friendly and courteous waiters, dressed immaculately in their uniforms. There was no need to check their menu card because I was sitting at Peter Cat to taste their lip smacking Chelo Kebabs. After about 30 minutes of placing my order, the dish arrived, piping hot emitting a delicious aroma. The tantalizing smell of the spicy kebabs seasoned with the melted butter was just too appetizing. I didn’t wait a single minute and started gorging on the delicious chelo kebabs the moment they were laid on the table.

Their Chelo kebabs are reasonably priced and it’s a filling dish. Unless you are a gourmand, I’m sure you can’t eat anything else after you’ve finished a plateful of chelo kebabs. You can also complete your chelo kebabs with their tasty pineapple blossom or a pint of beer. The choice is yours! Apart from chelo kebabs, Peter Cat is also famous for their delectable sizzlers. You can try their chicken sizzler, a perfect combination of chicken breast, vegetables and egg, flavored with sauce. I found their service efficient and prompt. But, what attracted my attention was the cute cat’s head on the menu card and the funny quotes on their cocktail menu.

I’m sure I’ll come back here again, but this time with family and friends if I can get a table free that is!

Haute Cuisine at Mainland China

A restaurant that prides on its authentic Chinese cuisine is Mainland China. A part of Speciality Restaurants, Mainland China has four branches in Kolkata- at EM Bypass, Howrah, Ballygunge and Prince Anwar Shah Road (at South City Mall).  I tried their haute cuisine at their South City branch.  After watching Life of Pi at Fame, my sisters and I booked a table at Mainland China (people are always thronging here, especially on weekends and you have to book your table beforehand to avoid waiting for an hour or so). Unfortunately, that day we didn’t have a plan of eating at Mainland China, but luckily few people were dining there that day and we didn’t have to wait for our turn.

Once seated and greeted by their well mannered staff we placed our order. If you are in Kolkata, you can dig into succulent Chinese cuisine at Mainland China. For our starters, we had mouthwatering Keong's Chicken with Green Chili and Spring Onion Hunan Prawns. The spicy flavors of these two dishes were enough to tantalize our taste buds and make us feel hungrier. Our main course consisted of Lobster In chilli oyster sauce, maoshi chicken, broken noodles with zucchini and golden garlic fried rice with iceberg lettuce. Finally, the waiter arrived with our mouthwatering dessert - Steamed coconut dumplings seasoned with honey butter sauce.  We didn’t get any opportunity to complain because the food and service at Mainland China was amazing.

If our appetites permitted we would have tasted each item here. I made up my mind to visit this place again to check out their succulent dishes, served hot and fresh to their customers. The ambience at Mainland China is also good, enhanced by its artful décor. You can also try their buffet served in the afternoon at specific rates. Trust me - once you taste Mainland China’s awesome Chinese cuisine you will want to come back to this place again and again!

Mocambo – Old school cooking at its best!

Where do you think you can get authentic Chinese, lip-smacking Italian and mouthwatering north Indian cuisines at affordable rates? Well, just visit Mocambo at Park Street when your gut craves any of the above delicacies! As you walk in, you can see a cosmopolitan crowd inside Mocambo - tables occupied by foreigners, Anglo-Indians and of course, food loving Bengalis who are ready to taste delicious dishes. The restaurant has become even more popular all over India after being shown in the super-hit Bollywood movie Kahaani released last year. People rush to the place where Vidya Balan was seen sipping coffee in the movie.

Well, I got a chance to taste the food at Mocambo before Kahaani hit the silver screen. We were a group of four friends who were tired after a shopping spree at New Market, dropped in at Mocambo to taste their delicacies. Mocambo’s colorful and elegant décor impressed us. The dimly lit lamps hanging from the ceiling creates a warm, romantic and cozy ambience. We had ordered Devilled Crab, Angels on Horse Back, Chicken A La Kiev (my favourite!), Chicken Pavlograd, Spaghetti Bolognaise and Mixed Fried Rice. Our desserts included delicious Coupe Mocambo and Chocolate Delight.

Each item was just perfect! The chef knows what spices and herbs to add to make each dish delectable. We could not taste their north Indian dishes, though I have heard that Mocambo prepares some exotic north Indian cuisine.

Satisfied after having eaten perfectly flavored Italian and Chinese dishes, we have decided to eat here time and again. The money that you spend here is worth the food that you get to taste here. And what shall I say about their service! The reputation of any restaurant depends on the competence and efficiency of its staff. Mocambo employs competent and efficient waiters who responds to your needs promptly.

So, the next time if you are in or around Park Street do not forget to taste delicacies at Mocambo!
