Bangalina Kolkata truly describes the spirit of our city. From khaddorosikgrandpas to petuk grandchildren, food forms an integral part of every citizen here. From Chinese dishes to street side food, eateries and restaurants engulf every nook and corner of the city. But even if hundreds of Chinese and Italian restaurants try to attract the masses, the soul of Kolkata will always remain dedicated to didur hather macher jhol and alu poshto. So, saluting the true spirit of Kolkata, here is a restaurant where bangalis will love, live and relish every item and get a nostalgic taste of their grandma’s delicacies.
BHOJOHORI MANNA, the name derived from a famous Bengali song, is a restaurant truly dedicated to the real babumoshais and didis of kolkata. The restaurant has 2 branches one in Hatibagan, just adjacent to the famous Star Theatre and another close to Sarat Bose road. Thus Bhojohori Manna aims to bring about a fusion in the food culture of bangals and ghotis by targeting the masses of two portions of the city. The northern branch being closer to my house prompted me to pay a visit there during last year’s Dura Puja. As I entered, I was mesmerized to see the ambience totally dedicated to thebangalina spirit. The walls were decorated with pictures of Howrah Bridge and Victoria Memorial as well as the main food attractions, which were engrafted on the walls. There were mud plates covered with banana leaf kept on every table. The waiters caught my attraction immediately as they were dressed in dhotis to mark the closing day of Durga Puja (dashami). But amongst all this, it was the food which tinkered my senses to the utmost. From bhaat, alubhaja, bhindi poshto, mooger dal, ilish mach, golda chingri to mangsho kosha ,chatni, mishti there was not a single item you could compare any foreign dishes to. Even the price range was quite affordable. There were meals starting from Rs.200 as well as single food items within an affordable price range. It saturated my tummy and enriched my taste buds.
So, if you are bored of monotonous Chinese dishes and need a break from boring home food, here is a restaurant where you will get that pet bhore khawa feeling, and on top of that if you love Bengali food, Bhojohori Manna will satisfy you from head to tummy.
