“The Best South Indian Food Joint in Kolkata?!?”

3.5 out of 5

A South Indian Restaurant that can easily be compared to YUMMRAJ’s favorite South Indian Restaurant, Murugan Idly Chennai is Jyoti Vihar, Kolkata. Located at Ho Chi Minh Sarani, near Theatre Road, the place is always full of shoppers, families, office goers and students. The secret to this is the superior quality of South Indian food they serve here.

Jyoti Vihar is a small South Indian restaurant which now is a part of kolkata’s heritage. The vintage (in the true sense of the word!) interiors of Jyoti Vihar with mosaic flooring, the wood paneling and old style table and chairs will remind you of your childhood days, probably because they are the same chairs you sat on then! This eatery breathes nostalgia, great memories and heritage in its every corner. If you don’t believe me, ask any regular here and they will tell you.

Well, their service is quite fast and courteous. The restaurant is clean and hygienic. They serve delicious South Indian food at slightly steeper than earlier prices – I know as I visit this restaurant every week! During lunch time, at around 1:00 in the afternoon the place full of people, and you WILL have to wait for your turn and get a token.

Their idly with sambhar (that they serve hot) is fresh, soft and beautifully steamed – some say it is the best in Calcutta if not the country (I’ve eaten all over the south and believe me, it is not an exaggerated claim at all)! Their wadas are crispy outside and soft inside. The ghee Butter masala Dosa they make will drive you crazy, and is easily the best butter sada dosa one can have this side of town. Jyoti Vihar serves you the most piping hot food - their milk upma and the dahi vada are outstanding!  The coconut chutney is excellent. It is thick and grainy, topped with roasted urad dal. Their paper dosa’s are crispy and light on your stomach though not their strong point. One special mention here - they also serve no-onion sambhar on request, so if you don’t like onion you can always ask for their no onion sambhar.

To complete your South Indian meal, they serve some nice filter coffee as well. I would highly recommend Jyoti Vihar to all food lovers. Even if you don’t like South Indian food, try South Indian food here - you may just fall in love with South Indian cuisine.

“Open Oven – A Decent Bakery With Fair Prices”

My last visit to Camac Street introduced me to the King of bakery and desserts there called The Open Oven. They make excellent desserts at decent prices. Their cakes are fresh and delicious. It is one of the better bakeries in town.

It is a nice place with polite and courteous staff. The ambience is just like any other bakery. They serve good desserts just like their namesake in Delhi.

After I came to know about Open Oven, Kolkata, I order cakes on all occasions here. I have become a big fan of their cakes and frequently visit this place. This is by far the most pocket friendly bakery I have ever visited.

Their Chocolate truffle cake and Butterscotch cake are undoubtedly the crown jewels of this confectionary shop. The truffle cake easily melts in your mouth giving a rich heavenly taste of pure chocolate. Being a die- hard chocolate fan, it suits my palate perfectly. The texture of this cake is very smooth and the chocolate truffle cream is heavenly. A hint of bitterness in the butterscotch cake along with their amazing icing decor adds a compliment to its taste.

The other cake options available there like Black Forest Gateaux, Chocolate cake, Coffee gateaux etc, are also popular though I have not tried them yet. In the pastries section, I am a big fan of their Black forest Pastry. Their chocolate truffle tart is also good.

Their chicken quiche and chicken croissant sandwich are exceptionally good and great for tea time or later in the evening. Their paneer pattie and Lebanese roll are also fresh and well prepared.
Pretty much everything I have tried I liked. They also have pretty decent prices when compared to other bakeries.

“Luscious Food At Decent Prices”

Mission Café (located adjacent to the chandni chowk metro station) is a place which is hard to miss. It is a fast food cum standing restaurant very famous among both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. This food joint is visited by all the commercial locale of central Kolkata. They have a vast menu which includes Chinese, North Indian, South Indian and Fast food.

It is a decent place with reasonable prices and awesome food. I have visited this place a number of times but the taste of their food remains unchanged in the last twenty years – a truly amazing level of consistency! The staff is very courteous and attentive. The service is generous and fast. The only drawback of this café is that its ambience is too old, though it is a small but neat and hygienic eatery.

My top pick at Mission café is chole bhature and plain cheese dosa. For beverages I love to pick cold coffee with cream and their kesar tea. They are amazing. The pindi chana which they serve with bhature are a treat to my taste buds, the bhature are wafer thin but too oily. The cheese dosa has lots of cheese filled in it and is very yummy – you will be hard pressed to find a better one in Central / North Kolkata.

The garden chop served during breakfast is a hot seller here and they run out of stock very soon. Also, one can try their paneer butter masala, baby naan and idlis which are very popular. The rose milkshake is nice and has had the same taste over years.

I will highly recommend this place to all foodies who haven’t tried their food that are in the area during lunch or tea time. Situated in the heart of the city’s business hub, this place serves delicious food which is light on your pocket and serves 100% value for money.

“Excellent south Indian food at an authentic south Indian lunch home”

3.5 out of 5

Being a die-hard fan of South Indian cuisine, I have explored most of the South Indian food joints in Kolkata over the years, but Ramkrishna Mission Lunch Home at Sarat Bose Road, near Deshpriya Park has been an old haunt for many – my tryst with it began over two decades back in school. Famous among early morning walkers, and more prominently, among young early morning college bunkers, RM Lunch home has been a regular favourite for many of us and continues to serve quality south Indian food at honest prices.

Ramkrishna Mission Lunch home has been a basic eating house serving authentic South Indian food. The place is noticeably clean and hygienic. The interiors are simple with tables fitted with marble tops. While entering the building it does give you a feeling of being in a lunch home. With a calm and peaceful atmosphere this place has a homely feeling. They have polite and friendly staff with quick and courteous service.

They have a short and simple menu with fewer varieties of dosa when compared to other lavish restaurants. However, their butter masala dosa has a tantalizing aroma of being freshly baked and urges you to gorge on it without stopping. The crust was crispy and perfect. Their idlis are soft and fresh – and if I may commit some culinary Calcutta South Indian blasphemy – probably better than its cousin Jyoti Vihar on its day (yes, JV lovers - boo me now!). The medu vadas are crispy outside and soft inside. Their uttapams are also tasty and nice to eat though uttapam is not one of my favourite dishes to order. Their USP is their special chutney with the special tadka on top. It is a must try at Ramkrishna Mission Lunch House. They also serve excellent South Indian filter coffee to complete your meal.

To sum up – Good food to pamper your taste buds at pocket friendly prices. You will leave this place with a happy stomach every time.

“Cakes – A Place Which Serves The Pleasure Of Life”

“STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS.” Being a big foodie, desserts are a favorite and are a must have in my food list. Cakes at theatre road is one of my favorite confectionaries place. I prefer it over Kookie Jar as they deliver the same quality at much more honest prices, a fact that is clearly visible if you go to both these side-by-side outlets during school give-over time!

Cakes at theatre road serve desserts, bakery and fast food, and is one of the best and the most popular confectionaries in the city. The place is very spacey and serves yummy bakes. They have polite and friendly staff with nice interior décor.

I love the cakes they make and always order my birthday cake from Cakes. I love the truffle cake they make as it melts in my mouth and has a rich taste. But you can also try their mango cake and fudge cake. They also make special birthday cakes in the form of comic characters, whether it’s chubby, lazy Garfield or mischievous Tom and Jerry. There cakes are smooth and have a heavenly taste and I never get tired of eating them. You also get a variety of chocolates and breads there. Their lemon tart, nut square and chocolate boat are a must have.

The non-vegetarian items they serve are also nice. Their chicken and mushroom patties, quiches and sandwiches taste really nice. The Turkish chicken pizza and the chicken focaccia are also good.
The cookies which they make are all right – you can get better elsewhere. The same goes for their Chocolate Brownies and Choco Ganache.

Cakes have maintained their standard really well over the years, and give you no place for complaints.  It is an absolutely delightful place which serves value for money. A must visit for all dessert lovers.

“Bibi of Taaja’s – Delicasies From All Around The Globe”

3.5 out of 5

The Sarkars have been a part of the culinary culture of Kolkata for over two decades now (albeit in different avatars). Bibi of Taaja’s located at Dhakuria is the latest offering by the Sarkars and possibly one of the most promising in the area. I came to know about Bibi of Taaja’s and instantly made my way there hoping that they had the old dishes that I loved in Taaja’s over the years – and I wasn’t disappointed!

Bibi of taaja’s is an offshoot of one of the oldest culinary offerings bringing cuisine from different parts of the globe to the city for many years now. Bibi of Taaja’s is not a typical restaurant which one would visit regularly. It’s in a lane below the Dhakuria bridge on the left side accessed by taking a U turn around the right side. Yes, it is slightly confusing but worth the turns. The ambience is very homely and I felt at home as soon as I entered the restaurant.

No major changes have been made to the menu of Bibi of Taaja’s to retain the old identity which was loved by everyone. Yes, there are a few additions but I am happy to report that they have retained the old charm of the previous avatars well. Overall, they have an excellent menu with cuisine from all around the world to pamper your taste buds.

They have courteous and friendly staff but the service was slightly slow. We ordered Shepherd’s pie, Sesame Fish bites, steamed prawn balls, Khowsuey, Fish Florentine, Thora sin moo, Paella with Joyee’s cookies and cream, lemon souffle and chocolate passion for dessert. The paella was fresh and beautifully cooked. Thora sin moo is a dish my in-laws really like and order every time – they liked it. The Khowsuey was excellent but you need to add all of the seasoning they give you for extra punch. The Fish Florentine was great as was the Shepherd’s Pie which is probably one of the best in town.

The chocolate passion was nice, the lemon soufflé was super, but the star of the evening was a dessert created by a chip of the ol’ block – Joyee’s cookies and cream – it was absolutely fabulous. I also love their regulars - capsicano, oriental and cheesarella, and would highly recommend them.

Bibi of Taaja’s is a truly global restaurant with cuisines from over 20 places. Their prices are pocket friendly and they serve good food. Yes, I will definitely visit this place again.

“Amini – South Indian Food With A Difference”

Want to visit a little Kerala in The City of Joy? Ammini at Monohan Pukur Road, near Sarat Bose Road area is the place to step in. A 22 seater restaurant driven by Ramani Menon serves authentic Kerala and coastal cuisine at honest prices.
It is a small cozy place with nicely done up ambience which gives you the Kerala feel. It has hues of brown and ochre elegantly understated to give the feel of Kerala. It has an open kitchen with a nice simple décor.
The menu is refreshingly original and offers enough to satisfy both vegetarians and meat lovers. Their menu is not very extensive but they do have specials every day. They serve food in banana leaf plates and earthen glasses which give their service a personalized touch. Their service is very courteous and reasonably quick. Their staff is friendly and polite. Their prices are worth paying for the delicious authentic Kerala food they serve.
The potato stew was a delicious preparation and was quite light. I loved it and highly recommend it. Appams with Kerala Kozhi Curry were very well cooked and tasted nice. The Kerala parathas were soft and fluffy though not the best in town.  The chicken roast and the dry spicy mutton were simply out of the world and tasted amazing. The cuisine is spicy but it also had a very distinct flavor which is good enough to tantalize the taste buds.
Amini overall is a refreshing change from the standard South Indian food found in Kolkata. I loved the food on offer and will definitely care to drop in here the next time I want to have authentic South Indian food.
P.S. After your meals don’t forget to have the unique Southey flavored betel nuts!

"Kookie Jar Café – Not Worth The Money"

Rating: 1 out of 5

Kookie jar Café located at a fabulous location in Kolkata at Rawdon Street is one of the most visited café of the city. The décor of this café is nice and relaxed. It has an elegant seating arrangement, with warm focused lighting with sunlight gliding in – so far so good.

The food served is average but the service is very poor. They have ill trained, haughty and uncooperative staff. They delay a lot in getting orders served – and I mean a lot! The take away section of the Kookie Jar café is also quite busy and is pretty slow in taking orders. Interestingly, they serve many of the same dishes ready to eat on the ground floor as above, but the dishes took over an hour to be served when we went there on the third day after it had just opened the restaurant above!

The top floor of the café costs nearly 40% more and many things which were available downstairs are not available upstairs. There is a huge price difference in the menu of the top floor of the same café which is very rare and creepy.

Coming to the food, the food is decent but did not fulfill the expectations I had from Kookie Jar café. It’s a far cry from their other offering Mangio. The dessert served is pretty good but the continental, thai and Italian dishes served are disappointing. The roast chicken in their Onion Focaccia was moderate whereas their chicken stroganoff was downright depressing and distasteful. It did not taste anything like a Strognoff should. The pot pie is extremely unsatisfying and will not live up to your expectations. The side orders like cheese garlic bread and French fries are extremely overpriced. The mango smoothie is good but the Darjeeling tea served was pathetic with a Tata Tea Gold teabag dipped in it.

If you are a diehard Kookie Jar fan and you visit kookie jar café then you will be definitely disappointed with this place. The lack of service in such a high end café will disappoint you and the place also lacks warmth. The food leaves you with quite a lot to desire and the menu is excellent for burning a hole in your pocket. Give it a thought before visiting this place as visiting Kookie Jar’s Loudon outlet for desserts and bakes is a better and more pocket friendly option than visiting Kookie Jar Café.

KJ café is average but not worth the money, though it is located in an awesome place of Kolkata which will ensure that it does well anyway.

“Lebneh – A Good Place To Pamper Your Tastebuds”

Rating: 4 out of 5

With so many new Lebanese food joints opening up in the city frequently, my latest tryst with lebanese food was at Lebneh. It is located at a very convenient location near Hazra crossing beside Jatin Das Metro Station.

The place is divided into two portions, the ground floor and the first floor. They have simple seating arrangements with a calm and composed environment on the ground floor and cozy couches with red and black theme and dim lights on the mezzanine floor. The homely décor sets a relaxed mood helping you enjoy the food though it is really very simple and functional - not too fancy. The staff is well trained, polite and courteous, though the service is a little slow because all of the food s made fresh for you, which is good if you are not in a hurry.

The open kitchen area allows you to see you food being prepared, and adds a positive speck to its interiors as well.

The Lebanese dishes they serve will simply make you fall in love with Lebanese food all over again! They have some excellent presentations - Devil’s Chicken Shawarma along with garlic vegetables was a delight as was their Ultimate Shawarma. The pita bread and falafel bites tasted really great. The sish touk wrap was well presented in shot glasses of pickled beet and a tahini dip just like it would be presented in a boutique restaurant which was seriously unexpected from this small restaurant. Lebanese Grill Chicken Herb Rice had a taste of mild garlic accompanied with a cheese dip and was a treat to our taste buds.

The prices are decent and very reasonable when compared to their competitors. The combos and Royal Lebanese are great value for money. The menu of Lebneh has quite a lot to offer and provides wider choice of dishes than most other Lebanese restaurants in town. They also have a take away counter which allows enjoying Lebanese food on the go – I would seriously recommend this as a regular home delivery joint for the quality of the food as well as their honest prices.

To sum it up, the restaurant is a great place to try Lebanese food at decent and affordable prices. The ambience is relaxing and calm. The service is good with friendly and helpful staff. They have a wide variety in their kitchen for you to pamper your taste buds. The shakes and sandwiches served are also excellent. It is overall a good place to drop in with friends and family for a simple but tasty lunch or dinner.

Garam Tawa: A small but decent eatery

Ratings: 2.5 out of 5

Anyone bored of having the same food at home and currently planning to have Tandoori dishes somewhere in North Cal can visit Garam Tawa once. It is located at Shyambazar Five point Crossing, Kolkata. Take any Shyambazar-bound bus and you will find it near Golbari. The location of the restaurant (being central) attracts people.  It is essentially a multi-cuisine restaurant but also offers various Tandoori dishes. This is an ideal place for non-vegetarian people.  Being a small restaurant, Garam Tawa has very simple décor. Though it is a non-ac food stop one can also avail of their dine-in facility. But due to its small space and difficulty in accommodating many customers people prefer to opt for its home delivery facility, which is much appreciated because of its promptness.

Garam Tawa is best for middle-class customers. The food is very reasonably priced. The staff is humble and makes you feel at home. Food coupons are not accepted here. As it is a small restaurant, valet parking is not available. This problem will be faced by all customers who come in a car. Credit cards are also not accepted. Payments can only be made in cash. Another thing that they do not offer is alcohol. Essentially, this is a pocket-friendly restaurant for people who want to grab a bite at reasonable prices.

“GANGAUR – The Indian Food Hub of Kolkata”

Ratings: 3 out of 5

Gangaur restaurant, situated at a wonderfully central location in Kolkata at Russell Street is one of the most unconventional vegetarian Indian food hubs here. It is best known for its delicious Indian cuisine but also serves mouth watering snacks and south Indian cuisine. The renovated interiors  give you an essence of Rajasthan with luxury and comfort but the restaurant is a little cramped, as waiters move up and down to serve you your delicacies.

The service is pretty good but you have to wait for a long time if it is their peak time. Students and ladies generally drop in for breakfast and lunch, whereas it is very famous for families coming in for a wholesome vegetarian family dinner. Cleanliness and hygiene are kept in mind and well maintained by the restaurant, which is always nice.

Some famous, rich in taste dishes served by “Gangaur” include chole bhature, dahi puchka, dahi kebab, veg zafrani and corn methi malai; choices of breads range from cheese naan, masala kulcha, missi roti, pudina naan to some common options like butter naan and roti. The dessert options in the menu are that impressive unlike their main course and starters, though one item that truly stands out is their Raj Bhog (if you can get it).

To sum it up, the restaurant serves fresh food at affordable prices and has a comfortable ambience. The location is wonderful and always lively. Conveyance is not a problem at any time of the day, so the next time you are in that area and want to pamper your taste buds with some rich Indian vegetarian cuisine drop in at Gangaur.

Climb up to Terraza Jardine for a wonderful dinner under the night sky

Rating: 3 out of 5

I have been to Terraza Jardine a number of times and whenever I am there, I’ve been really very happy and satisfied. It is a food joint located on the roof top terrace of the Rainey Court Residency building on Ballygunj Circular Road. I always look for roof top seating arrangement in restaurants, especially for dinners as it feels great to have dinner with warm company sitting under the night stars.  Terraza Jardine is one of my favorite destinations in Kolkata, not only for its ambience but also for the quality of food that it serves at reasonable rates.

The service here is quite slow but I enjoy this slow pace because of the ambience. If you don’t turn up here leaving loads of work behind, then this slow pace is as an additional advantage if you are looking to enjoy the calmness and pleasantness of the place under the open night sky. It is an ideal romantic after-hours dinner destination. Though located in the heart of the city, you will enjoy total calmness here, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The restaurant opens at 11AM but I have never been there in daylight. I have tried a number of dishes there and each one of them was really excellent. North Indian is good here. Machhli Begum Bahar is a unique item here which you will rarely find elsewhere. Dry fruits and khoya are used to prepare the stuffing which is then stuffed inside a Bhetki fillet. With each bite, the heavy stuffing of nuts and khoya oozes out to fill your mouth with its creamy and delicious taste. Another item that’s pretty good here is their flavored lemon marinated chicken which they’ve named Gandharaj Kathi Murgi. The boneless chicken pieces is marinated in flavored lemon juice (gandharaj lemon) and then grilled. These two items are a must try recipe of this terrace restro.

If you are fond of continental dishes, then try their salads. Not a huge range of options but they’re good. To end your meal with something sweet, you can always go in for one of their desserts - their Baked Malai Chumchum and Hot Gulab Jamun with ice-cream are mention worthy. There is nothing special about their hot Gulab Jamun with ice-cream so avoid that.

North Indian delicacies at New Step Inn beckon you again and again

Rating: 3 out of 5

Simplicity is a major part of New Step Inn’s USP but when it comes to their culinary art, this restaurant surpasses the standards set by many top notch restaurants in Kolkata. Situated in New Alipore (near the Petrol Pump), New Step Inn is well known for North Indian, Chinese and Sea Food. I have been to this place a couple of times and really love to gorge on their North Indian delicacies. Their Chinese is average at best, but their North Indian is really excellent.

Their decor is very simple just like a dining hall at home. Simplicity prevails everywhere in this eating hub, giving its customers a homely feel. Their service is also very warm and moderately fast. But it is the quality of their food where they truly excel.

Their Chicken tandoori and reshmi kabab are a must try. For the main course, Butter Chicken and Chicken Bharta are the best options with any varieties of pulao or breads. Their rotis are so soft that you will surely prefer roti over rice. Dahi chicken is also a fantastic preparation here. The North Indian delicacies are really well made at New Step Inn and it is one of the few restaurants in Kolkata that serves good North Indian food.

Next, the Chinese - as I always prefer ordering Chinese, I tried their Chinese delicacies when I was at this place the first time (something I will NEVER be doing again!). I had Chicken lemon coriander soup with Dry red chilli chicken as a starter. Both were nice, especially the chilli chicken, but nothing outstanding. I had Chicken Hakka Noodles and Chicken kampao. None of the Chinese preparations can be described as bland but they were not particularly worth talking about. I was satisfied but have no plans to order Chinese here again. So, while I give a 2 rating for their Chinese, I will go up to 4 for their North Indian cuisine.

Bhavesh Bhatia loves to taste various preparations at different restaurants and updates his blog regularly with restaurant reviews. He also updates his blog with other website content writing. So for any information on 100% original SEO content, get in touch with him.

Delicious Chinese food down south!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Naktala in the south of Kolkata really surprises you with some really good food outlets. Mimi’s Kitchen is one such place that rustles up simple and tasty Chinese fare. No matter how many times you eat at this place, the taste remains the same. About three months back, I got the opportunity of ordering Chinese fare from this place. The place offers Chinese delicacies at moderate prices.

Above all their offerings, it is their soups that simply make my day. Their spicy soup dishes, namely hot and sour and manchow soup are my clear favourites amongst all their soups. The flavours and the meat along with the vegetables leave you feeling full and energised in no time. Having begun your meal on such a note, the other preparations did not disappoint either.

Their starters (like chicken drumsticks, golden fried prawns, and pepper fish) are terrific. Equally appetizing is their momos (whether steamed or fried); they do not disappoint you with their generous and juicy meat stuffing.

Similarly all the other meat dishes are juicy and succulent. Though they may be covered in a thick gravy, they are never soggy. Quantities are good and a person with very small appetite will find difficult to finish one dish. Yet their dishes are value for money especially regular chilli prawn, sweet and sour prawn, hot garlic chicken, Sichuan chicken and Manchurian fish. Though they can be had with fried rice and Hakka or gravy chow, it is their mixed Mei foon that deserves the place of honour on your table. Their light, long and soft textured Mei foon is cooked to perfection.

It is always a pleasure to have food from this restaurant; the comfortable chairs, the cosy atmosphere and the polite and well mannered servers make this place a must visit.

Really - A snack bar that serves some super snacks!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Very close to New Alipore Petrol Pump and New Alipore Railway Station, Super Snack Bar is one of the favorite hang outs for many who love to gorge into delicious vegetarian delicacies that pacify the taste buds while providing a wholesome meal (and at reasonable rates!). The ambience is quite soothing as well as stimulating because of the tempting images of desserts, beverages and other foods all across the wall. Quite spacious but with limited seating arrangements - something they can improve by adding more chairs and tables without cluttering the place because on weekends diners literally have to stand in a queue to get a table.

This place has gained much popularity among foodies because of its quality service as well as excellent food. Though they serve both North Indian and South Indian food, according to me this place is extremely good for South Indian food with an average rating (at best) for their North Indian cuisine.

They have many options in dosas starting from sada to masala and rava. I generally prefer masala dosas of different varieties and all the dosas that I have tasted here are really awesome. The cheese onion masala dosa, paper butter masala dosa and rava masala dosa are a must try here. Mixed utthapam is another thing that like here. Their sambar and chutney are good and have lots of south Indian flavor.

In North Indian section, one can try paw bhaji followed by mixed or papri chat. It is my suggestion – do not order any pizzas here because they are horribly prepared here and you will be disappointed. However, the chats are good though the prices are not in line with the quantity and taste that they provide. According to me, the rates of their chats are a bit high. You will find many juices here, and this section really rocks. Their healthy fruit juices will quench your thirst, leaving you refreshed. Among the other beverages, I always prefer cold coffee with ice cream.

Their service is quite fast and no one will feel unattended. The waiters are always around you to serve you, even when your table is filled with South Indian food and you need to get your samber and chutney bowls filled from time to time.

One thing - if you are driving a car to this place, parking can be an issue to worry about.

Enjoy natural frozen desserts from New Zealand

Rating: 3 out of 5

Just opposite the Golpark Post Office, New Zealand Natural Ice Cream is really one of best dessert parlours in South Kolkata and offers some super smooth, rich and creamy ice creams. A great place to hang out with your friends, according to me this place is a much better option to hang out at for younger crowds than some of the popular air conditioned cafeterias that have cropped up around it.

New Zealand Natural Ice Cream offers a wide variety of options of ice-creams featuring some innovative culinary artistry. A few weeks back, I was there with my friends and was swayed by their awesome selection of ice creams. Though I try not to eat ice creams too often due to health reasons, I sampled a few spoons of their Maple Walnut, Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Mocha Almond Fudge and Kiwi Pavlova. Kiwi Pavlova was the flavour for me. They serve their ice creams in a beautiful way to give a visual treat to your eyes as well as taste buds. The ice creams are very creamy with a rich texture and feel smooth on the tongue. Another thing that is a must try here is their sizzling brownie sundae, which is so chocolaty and creamy that you will not want to share it with anyone.

Their service is quite prompt. This is a small parlour with a pleasing ambience that goes perfectly with a place like this. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but when you get quality you should be prepared to pay more for it.

Food not fit for us commoners!

Rating: 0.5 out of 5

Lords Restaurant, located on Ultadanga Main Road is not a place that makes you feel very lord-like. Though it is conveniently located at a busy thoroughfare, the food and the environment make it a miss and blink wonder. The place is too small and cramped for comfort. Even inside an air conditioned room, the stuffy and suffocating environment just ruins the whole dining experience. Considering the poor food quality and quantity, this is definitely not the place you want to spend your hard earned money at. At such prices, there are other much better restaurants that you can go to. Though they offer all kinds of dishes, it is better to stick to regular Chinese basics. One should avoid experimenting here, especially with pork and mutton dishes. The only positive was their service, which was prompt and efficient.

Their Chinese fare is decent and preparations are average. Though they offer all kinds of soups; some of them seem to lack adequate seasoning and some were really bland, yet their sweet corn soup (As I mentioned earlier stick to the usuals here!) was well prepared. Among their meat items, chicken is the only meat that they seem to cook properly and that tastes satisfactory. Of all the chicken side dishes, try only their chicken lollipops, drums of heaven and chilli chicken. Seafood dishes can be given a miss entirely as they do not taste the same no matter how many times you send it back (we tried thrice!). Sometimes, all their dishes taste almost the same. Regular fried rice options like mixed fried rice and chicken fried should be ordered. The same goes for their chow items too.

Though they offer desserts to round off the meal, by the time you have eaten your meal you will not stick around for desserts anymore.

Get to Igloo to relish their super icy, creamy igloo-ish flavours

Rating: 3 out of 5

Well named, Igloo Cafe & Ice Cream Parlour is probably the one of the best dessert parlours in Behala and offers really awesome ice creams; it is definitely worth a visit. Situated in James Long Sarani at Behala, this parlour offers varieties of sundaes along with snacks. It is an old ice cream parlour with a homely ambience, simple decor and a pleasing lady always around to serve her customers with a smile. I had been to this place after a long time, and every time I have been here the service has been really friendly. Nothing can disappoint you about this place if you can compromise with its simple decor, which is no way comparable to the modern interior decor seen in today’s ice cream joints.

I tasted a couple of their sundaes along with their sandwiches but have never opted for anything else because their tempting sundaes don’t allow me to do so. Their Chicken Cheese Grilled Sandwich and Russian Cold Sandwich are the best sandwiches here.

All the sundaes are well made. Pure Ecstasy will surely take you to a world of ecstasy as soon as you taste a spoonful of it. It is delicate, rich in whipped cream and hot fudge chocolate, and the ice cream scoop melts in your mouth, leaving you wanting more. Their Chocolate Dark Temptation, Brownie Bites Sundae, Crumbled Chocolate Sundae, Irish Coffee Delight and Amazing Black Forest are all really good options one can order here. If you love fruity flavours (I don’t!), then order As you like it, apparently the best fruity treat available for your taste buds here.

Rolls at Ice Berg – well done!

Rating: 3 out of 5

People like me who are quite frequently in Golpark are well aware of the very popular roll centre Ice Berg, situated adjacent the Golpark Petrol Pump. A small food joint with outdoor seating, this place remains overcrowded with people at any hour of the day. I have been visiting this place often when I used to go to Golpark for any work. Till date, this place has never compromised with their quality and quantity, a lesson many other roll outlets should learn from them. Whenever I am there, this food joint has always satisfied my hunger pangs with its excellent preparations.

Though their rolls are most popular, they also serve Chinese and kababs. I always prefer their thick and heavily stuffed rolls because of their awesome taste. Their super taste is what has helped them to run their business so successfully for decades. My favourites are Chicken Special Roll and Chicken Tikkia Roll. The generous dose of chicken along with other ingredients makes their rolls a really wholesome experience. I have also tried their chow and rice a long time back but they’re nothing great unlike their super gorgeous rolls.

If are not too conscious about the ambience of a food joint that offers good food, Ice Berg is surely a must try for you for their rolls.

An unknown eatery in the heart of Kolkata!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Haju’s Darbur on Bentinck Street is one of those places that rely on word of mouth publicity. Though it is located in the central business district, this place still has miles to go before it can rival Aliah (situated nearby), though both of them specialise in two different cuisines. The place rustles up well cooked Chinese fare. The items are available at affordable and moderate prices. The quality of food served is always fresh and healthy. The service is commendable; the servers are a polite and efficient bunch of people. They are attentive to every need of the diner and are at your side without a minute’s delay. They have a very extensive and exhaustive menu. All the items listed on them are available and if not they let you know beforehand. The food does not take very long to reach your table; the food is served fresh and piping hot.

With spicy soups like tom yum soup, hot and sour soup and manchow soup, you get to taste all the flavours. You have well balanced flavours; there is sweetness, saltiness, sourness and spiciness. Their momos (both steamed and fried) are delightful and scrumptious treats. The meat or vegetable fillings are generous and the size of the momos will not disappoint you.

Likewise, the quantity of fried rice and noodle staples might need two people to finish a plate and contain rice or noodle and meat in equal quantity. Some of the side dishes that are equally popular and equally filling are their chilli fish, chilli chicken, hot garlic chicken, sweet and sour prawns and Sichuan prawns. Even their vegetarian dishes are mouth watering preparations and make this restaurant a wonderful option for vegetarians too, especially during lunch.

For office goers they have moderately priced special lunch packs on offer.

Get 5-star food at road side Anamika Roll Center

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

A good friend of mine stays at New Alipur and hence I have explored a number of food joints in this area. So this time we went to Anamika Roll Center. Situated at Triangular Park adjacent to Azad Hind Dhaba, this is a road side food joint that sells a variety of rolls. Previously, it owned two stalls, one for rolls and the other for Chinese, but for some reason they have shut down the Chinese one and are only running the roll center.

I have had the pleasure of trying both their rolls and Chinese and believe me, their Chinese used to be pretty good. I have seen people drop in here driving their cars from distant places like EM Bypass, Ultadanga etc. a number of times to eat Chinese food and rolls here.

Though it is a road side small eating hub, this food joint attracts diners from local as well as distant areas because they never compromise with quality I guess. They don’t make any of their preparations too oily, and their hygienic way of preparing food (for a roadside stall!) is a big plus for this place; something rarely found in other road side eateries.

As Chinese is not available any more I better move on to their brilliant and wholesome rolls that are also the main money spinners for the owners. Imagine – with a neighbor like Azad Hind, Anamika’s is still doing very brisk business! The rolls offered here are delicious to taste. The thin paratha of the roll (fried in very less oil may I add) is really the unique thing here that you won’t find elsewhere, and this is the reason why people throng to this place instead of its neighbors. Moreover, the marinating process of the chicken, mutton or paneer pieces is really unique and you won’t need a microscope to find pieces in your roll. There is a generous portion of chicken, mutton and paneer pieces in the rolls.

Being a vegetarian, my friend always gives a thumbs up to their Onion roll though I haven’t tasted it yet. I love to gorge on their double egg double chicken or mutton rolls. The meat pieces are so succulent and soft that your taste buds will be more than pacified. Moreover, due to the double filling, one tends to relish the meat pieces more. I have also tried these rolls with potato stuffing and they are also good. The mashed potato prepared with spices gives a real treat to the taste buds. I just hope that they open the Chinese counter once again.

Note: Avoid weekends because the place is overcrowded and if you are there at the wrong time, you may find that there is nothing left to order. They are open generally from 4-9 PM but on weekdays, you will find the stall open till 9.30-10 PM. Car parking is not a problem here.

Dig in to Brewberrys’ Sizzling Brownies!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Today, I am really happy to review a nice café which is close to my place but one I had never visited before or noticed earlier. I am talking about Brewberrys located close to Elgin Road, near Northern Park. This is the only problem with this place - its location. If you are not very familiar with the area, it is quite difficult to find this place and that probably why I never visited this wonderful cafeteria earlier.

Brewberrys is a typical vegetarian cafeteria with the interior décor and ambience resembling a western café. A guitar hangs on the wall, a book case displays a number of books on various topics you can read here, there are animated paintings on the wall; overall, the ambience is cool and goes well with a café. Like other modern cafes, there are a lot of options to try, among which I went in for a Hazelnut Shake and Sizzling Brownie with vanilla ice cream topping dipped in choco sauce (the topping idea was given by the staff), whereas my friend (who loves spicy treats) went in for a Mexican Burger along with The Dark Horse Mojito. Among these 4 items, the Sizzling Brownie was the most tempting and will surely leave you asking for more - creamy and yummy to taste. The super soft hot brownies are arranged in pieces one on top of the other topped by a scoop of vanilla dipped in a generous helping of dark brown choco sauce – can’t really go wrong here.

It was good enough to influence my friend to order one more. The drinks, the hazelnut shake and mojito were also very refreshing. The burger was also tasty, especially the homogeneous distribution of jalapenos and salsa added real flavor to this big bite snack. I will soon be back to taste some other items but my obvious favourite here is their Sizzling Brownie with ice-cream.

Forgot to mention one thing - the rates. The rates are very pocket friendly and relatively cheaper when compared to many other cafés that have cropped out in recent years across the city.
