Preview: West Indies Vs New Zealand in Super Eights of ICC T20 World Cup 2012

West Indies and New Zealand are ready to encounter each other at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium today at 3.30 PM local and 10.00 AM GMT. This is the third match for both the teams in Super Eights round of this ICC T20 World Cup 2012 and on the basis of current points table; West Indies is one step ahead of the Kiwis as West Indies have won their first Super Eights match against England and scored 2 points followed by a loss against Sri Lanka in their second match. New Zealand, on the other hand have lost both their previous matches and are at the bottom position in their group with null point in pocket.

In this match, New Zealand will play tooth and nail to retain their existence in this tournament as they are well aware that one more loss will shatter their dream of winning the ICC T20 World Cup trophy. Even if they manage to get a win in this match, their existence in this tournament is threatened as they have no point in pocket and their NRR is -0.268 which is the lowest rate in this Group 1. So to retain their existence in this tournament, the Kiwis not only need a win against West Indies but they actually need a big win to overcome their lagging NRR. Moreover New Zealand also needs England’s loss in their match against Sri Lanka which is the second match of the day to ensure their existence in this tournament.

Sri Lanka is almost in the semi-final with two wins from two matches and another win against England will make their way to the next round whereas the other group members- England, West Indies and New Zealand are still struggling to fix a spot in the semi-final. At the end of the Super Eights matches, the team with highest NRR among these three will accompany the host team to the next round.

Compared to the status of the Kiwis, West Indies are in a much favorable position with one win in hand and one more win against the Kiwis is very necessary for them along with England’s loss in the other match of the day to ensure their position in the semi final.

Batting in Kiwi squad is appreciable but their bowling is one of the main reasons behind their successive losses. The batsmen scored quite well but they repeatedly failed due to severely poor bowling. In their first match, they put up a challenging score in front of the host team but their poor bowling dropped them and snatched the winning crown effortlessly.

The strongest point in the Caribbean team is their batting but sometimes despite of their strong batting order, they suffer ups and downs in their batting and gather a relatively low score and this happened on last Saturday when they lost the match by 9 wickets against Sri Lanka. Chris Gayle, their veteran batsman failed to give his best that day and the run rate collapsed along with the team’s success. Their bowling line up is also consistent to outsmart their opponent.
