New Zealand and England, both the teams started their SuperEights round in ICC T20 World Cup 2012 with disappointing defeats against their
opponents, Sri Lanka and West Indies respectively. The 1st Super
Eights match was between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on September 27, where the
former smashed the Kiwis in a Super Over and got a nail-biting victory. In that
match, both the teams tied at 174 and went for a Super Over. On the other hand,
in the second match of this qualifying round that held on the same day, West
Indies defeated England by 15 runs.
Now on September 29, England and New Zealand are heading
each other for the 17th match of this tournament and the 5th
match of Super Eights at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The match
will start at 3.30 PM local time and at 10.00 AM GMT. This match is important
for both the teams to continue their existence in this tournament. So both the
teams are heading for a resurrection and in a comparative scale between these
two teams, the Kiwis are undoubtedly in a higher rank than the English.
Chris Gayle played brilliantly in the last match to outsmart
England and he is the only player in the team who is responsible for England’s
defeat. On the other side, New Zealand was fabulous in the 20 over match and
managed a winning score of 174. Veteran Kiwi openers, Martin Guptill and Rob
Nicol did a fantastic job to initiate the match with a good score and the third
placed Bredndon McCullum continued the trend to reach 174. While fielding, the
Kiwis needed more consistency to create pressure over Sri Lankan batsmen.
Skipper and Captain Ross Taylor could have done more but whatever he did that
day is praiseworthy.
Contrary to the performance portrayed by the Kiwis,
England’s performance was disheartening. From the beginning, British players
failed to extend their dominance in the ground and an array of losing early and
important wickets took a serious toll on the team’s success. Kevin Pietersen is
out of the team and this became a serious issue for the team. So this team has
to struggle seriously in this match to get over the Kiwis because their opening
pair as they are lacking Pietersen’s powerful presence and New Zealand has a
record of punching on top of their weights. But to win this match, England has
to improve their batting order whereas New Zealand’s poor bowling can threaten
their position in this match.
