The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Review

Summary: the moral of the story – age is not a factor when it comes to fall in love, to enjoy your life or to bring out the best in you. The movie is a masterpiece which teaches us to be our best and live life to the fullest.

The movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is set in India. It’s the story about a group of old men and women with a love for life. The movie is a landmark for director Madden and also for the great group of British legends.

The story is a great mix of comedy, romance and high-voltage drama. Impressed with the advertisement, seven old Britishers, living on their pension, decide to spend the rest of their lives in the retirement home for the old at Jaipur. The group includes Judy Dench (Evelyn), a housewife who realizes the monetary debt she has to live with after her husband’s death; Tom Wilkinson as Graham, a retired judge of the High Court, whose not only motto was to stay at the Hotel during his visit to India, but also a deep dark secret that he was holding close to his heart; couple Douglas and Jean played by Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton respectively, who lost their retirement benefits trying to start up an internet company for their daughter; Madge (Celia Imrie), an ageing beauty who is still on the lookout for a rich husband; Norman (Ronald Pickup) who is looking for THE girl who wouldn’t call him dirty and old; and Muriel (Maggie Smith) is a fussy xenophobic ex-housekeeper, who has decide to get her hip operated in India knowing that the same would be shelved in Britain. Other than the fantastic seven, we also have Dev Patel as Sonny Kapoor, who plays the role of the manager of the Marigold Hotel.

They are greeted by surprise as they enter the hotel. Not all was as exotic as advertised. What was advertised as the dream hotel from the British Raj, the hotel was far from being complete. The rooms are incomplete and most of them do not have any telephone and some of the rooms are already inhabited by pigeons. To make matters worse, they encounter the ever-day-dreaming manager Sonny and his mother (played by Lillete Dubey). However, they decide to stay. Only Norman is not disturbed by the ruckus around him as he is hell bent of finding a girlfriend and nothing could stop him.

There are some funny moments in the movie. For example when Norman is seen reading the Kama Sutra with utmost dedication; it reminds us of the fact that the old have a thing or two about sex as well. However the movie deals with the emotional turmoil of every character. The most notable is Judy Dench, who is vulnerable and stoic at the same time and does not back away from trying new ways to seek happiness. Her chemistry with Bill Nighy is noteworthy and one of the most memorable moments of the movie is when the couple roams around the streets of Jaipur in a motorbike.

All the characters have done a noteworthy job in this movie. However, the one actor that stands out is Penelope Wilton, who essays the character of an old woman dying to be listened to but lacks attention and audience is a class apart.

The movie, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, is a movie that breathes a fresh lease of life in both young and old. Set in the beautiful locales of Rajasthan, the movie shows new ways of living life to the fullest even when the days are numbered. It teaches us an important lesson – old age may not always be imposed by Nature; most of the time it is a state which is imposed upon us by the circumstances surrounding us. One does not need to be young, but needs to feel young at heart to enjoy the gift called Life. Madden’s masterpiece “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is the celebration of life which cannot be missed.

The Expendables 2 – Review

In the sequel to the previous edition of The Expendables, we see the cigar-chewing Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his chosen gang of mercenaries romping around the world to finally take on the sadistic Jean Vilain played by Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Couple of new faces that bring some freshness to the gang that was otherwise filled with ruthless looking aged people with muscles are Hemsworth, who essays the role of a young sniper Billy and Nan Yu – only female assassin in a all-male mercenary squad – who plays the character of Maggie. Coincidentally she was chosen to step into the shoes to Jet Li (Ying Yang) who retires in the beginning.

There are a few points that prevent The Expendables 2 from being an action lover’s dream. Firstly, the movie is fast paced right from the start when we see the group going to rescue a Chinese Millionaire from Nepal by executing an excellent plan of action.

As the plot thickens, the quality and superiority of action that one expects from an action-packed movie of this kind starts to lag. This can be seen especially when scenes depicting hand-to-hand combat are executed. The movie also lacks some charismatic second leads and Stathom is under-used. The comic relief and the rivalry between Jason Statham and Mickey Rourke were missing.

Actually, the comic relief that was provided by Lee Christmas (who portrayed the picture of a lover boy who was heartbroken) was overshadowed by the humor provided by the trio of Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris.

Jean-Claude Van Damme comes to the party with all the required sniping and an I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude towards all that was breathing. His only aim was to get his hands on the Plutonium. Director Simon West could have used more of his martial art skills rather than just sticking to the trademark round-house kicks in some scenes. Jean-Claude Van Damme could have been portrayed as a villain with a lot more physicality by making use of his fighting skills as compared to Eric Roberts (the bad guy from the previous installment).

While Expendables was all about larger-than-life guns, men with muscle and ready to fight and explosions, Expendables 2 tries to keep their fans close. References to Lundgren’s chemical engineering past, Chuck Norris facts, Rambo, the Terminator and Die Hard all make their way in the film. This makes the dialogues anything but inspiring. We also get to see a dig being taken at Schwarzenegger’s real life political aspirations.
Above all, The Expendables 2 will remain like the altar for the fans of action movies from the 80’s and 90’s. They will eagerly wait for the 3rd part to be released. However, Gen-X viewers might not wait as eagerly as their predecessors because they are not used to seeing actor—who are no longer as fit as they used to be – carrying out dare-devil stunts.

Lastly, the movie is worth watching with all its action packed scenes. However, as an observer, one might feel that the characters could have been made a bit more interesting. The fact that the film seems like a cartoon in some parts also does not look good to the eye.

Shirin Farhad ki Toh Nikal Padi – Review

There is nothing safer than to make your first movie designed on the Hrishikesh Mukherjee brand of movies. Debutant director Bela Bhansali Sehgal, daughter is Sanjay Leela Bhansali has done the exact same thing. The result is a sweet, short and uncomplicated story with many funny and feel-good moments.

As mentioned earlier, Shirin Farhad ki Toh Nikal Padi is based on the kind of movies that we were used to when Hrishikesh Mukherjee was in his prime. Shirin Farhad ki Toh Nikal Padi has many good characters with a heart of gold. You get the chance of seeing their lives, how they deal with their problems and how easily they resolve any issue without making a fuss.

Sehgal tries to fill some Bollywood moments like dreamy songs and occasional drama in her movie about two Parsis in their forties finally finding love. One might feel that Bela Bhansali Sehgal has tried to make a spoof of some popular Bollywood movies. However, it is advised to keep your logic at home before you watch this movie.

The story revolves around Shirin (Farah Khan) and Farhad (Boman Irani). They are middle-aged people who are still waiting to find their true love.

Farhad is 45 years old but he still is afraid of his mother and is shy when it comes to talk to people. Shirin is responsible to bring Farhad out of his shell and Farhad finally finds someone with whom he could share all his dreams and even his craze for Dukes’ Mangola. Shirin is impressed by Farhad’s simple nature and they evidently become a couple. However, they face trouble soon as their families are against this relationship.
The movie is filled with many laugh-till-your-stomach-hurts moments. For example, the scene when Shirin comes to meet up with Farhad’s family is one of the many laugh-aloud moments in the movie. The comic relief and humor is consistent and well spread across the whole film. Farhad as a character is entertaining more so because of the fact that Boman Irani has brought this character alive with his little touches and an effortlessly flawless performance. His interactions with Shirin are funny and at the same time romantic. At one point, Farhad spells out his matrimonial bio, as if out of habit, while expressing his love for her. “Name: Farhad, Age: 45,” and so on, before proclaiming: “First love: Shirin. Last love: Shirin.”

One will understand why Farah Khan was chosen for this role after watching this movie. She fits into the character of Shirin from every angle. Actually, the whole movie stands out just because of the chemistry between its lead pair. There are a few Parsi actors who give the movie a more ethnic feel like Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal and Kurush Deboo. We also get to watch the enigmatic Shammiji after many years of absence. She portrays the role of Farhad’s grandmother to the hilt.

A few points that could have been avoided or made better are the inconsistency in the storyline, production values not as high as one would expect from a Bollywood flick and unnecessary music. There are too many songs and they only slow down the pace of the movie. The Parsi-style jokes are funny in the beginning but they seem to become a drag by the end of the movie.

In almost two hours, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi delivers enough for a viewer so as to not grumble about wasting money and time on it. I will advise you to watch Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi for some truthful moments and an endearing performance by Boman Irani.

Resident Evil Retribution- Good action flick but you’ll wish there was a better plot!

Milla Jovovich butt-kicks her way into the undead territory in Resident Evil:Retribution, the fifth videogame-based zombie catastrophe movie in the franchise.

Milla Jovovich moves from her usual skin-tight leathers and ugly buckle wear, and dons a jeans, with blond hair and a sweet cute little girl.

One does not have to wait long for evil to strike, sending property sale values plunging as zombies run riot around the city smashing brains and looking for blood.

How that happens, along with the rest of the messed up plot, doesn’t really matter. Resident Evil was not always known for its story as much as it was known for its action-packed thrill-to-kill sequences. And the 5th edition does not disappoint. The flaws in the movie are covered up by narratives. It’s the same blood curdling carnage as the first four movies, with 3D effects spilling blood, blades and body parts into the audience amidst a non-stop bombardment of gunfire and explosions.

Once again, determined Alice stands against the evil with whips and huge rifles from a backpack holster and takes out monsters, drooling zombies and bad guys employed by the ugly Umbrella Corporation. The deadly virus Umbrella designed for biological warfare is still out in the open and is now being tested on overseas population worldwide. Alice ends up globetrotting along with new side-kick Ada Wong (Bingbing Li).
Fight scenes are thrown very generously throughout the movie. Slow-motion digital graphics make bullets dance while Alice literally flies, jumping from one victim to the next with her guns blazing and using their bodies as if they were pommel horses.

Alice is helped by a few good men, some of whom she knows from earlier movies. A computer called the Red Queen, designed not to take no for an answer, make life difficult for the little band of fighters.
Writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson was not content to stick with drooling zombies and fountains of blood and he takes the movie a level higher with x-rays that show bones getting crushed and hearts getting ripped off from the arteries as one gets hit.

The special effects are imposing but they tend to become a pain to the eye after some time, making Resident Evil: Retribution a movie shot on a stage with a bloody digital world created around it as a backdrop.
When we last see Alice, she is standing on the roof of the White House with her gang while D.C. is ravaged by winged zombies. Prelude to a sequel? Let’s wait and watch!

There’s nothing really secretive about Raaz 3 – Easily the worst in the series…

There's only one mystery about fame. Nobody gets to keep it forever, but everyone gets their share. Fame is very fickle minded and is easily pulled towards something which glitters more than the other. The theme of Vikram Bhatt’s new movie Raaz in 3D is the same. Shanaya (Bipasha Basu) is a superstar who is slowly tumbling down from the dizzying heights of fame, while the hot and fresh hopeful Sanjana (Esha Gupta) is bagging one movie after another. Sanjana gets rewarded for the efforts in the movies and she gradually rises to become the top heroine in the industry. The self-obsessed and brutally ambitious Shanaya will leave no stone unturned to cling to the fringes of her once prospering career. Even if that means playing with love, using her director-cum- boyfriend, Aditya (Emraan Hashmi) and losing faith in God. She take the help of Kali Vidya (black magic), tantric-mantra, meeting and sometimes mating with evil souls, seducing her boyfriend into becoming partner-in-crime and with a lot of exposing outfits and loads of sex. Sanjana is haunted by the spells of black magic, and in between shrieks, screams and steamy sex scenes, loses control over her mind and heart. In comes a bhatakti aatma (Manish Chaudhury) accompanied by some shocks, shivers and songs - and you have another sequel to the Raaz series.

With a story that's quite simple with crude characters, Vikram Bhatt, dishes out this horror (read “horny”) show in 3D, with sleek production values and clichéd elements like the usual fog, visit to the cemetery and crying voice-overs in plenty, spoonful of sex, horror and a few spine-chilling scenes. The 3D effect is not up to the mark, but a few ground-breaking scenes do impress. The music, however, is disappointing especially since it is a Bhatt film, with songs used to cover up insignificant scenes. The music, too, is a rip-off from the Bengali film Industry.

Bipasha looks dangerously stunning in this role of a soul possessed by the Dark. It's a challenge and she takes it on with a vengeance. Emraan brings out different shades of his character, but in the struggle between pecks, obsession and possession he comes across as a completely confused soul. Esha Gupta is an attractive package and strikes in emotional scenes. Esha’s performance was better and not a blink-and-you-miss type like that in Jannat 2.

It is a worthy movie for people who want to come out of the Ramsay Bros. era. However, watching Raaz in 3D is a risk that one should not take if they have other less risky options.

Krishna Aur Kans – Review

It will not be true to say that I was not excited about the prospect of watching a 3D animated movie with a tub of popcorn in my hand. Like any other tween, I was literally jumping with excitement as I sat to watch the movie. And honestly, the movie lived up to my expectation.

Krishna Aur Kans will definitely make you relive your childhood memories. Directed by Vikram Veturi, this two hours animated movie seems like a remake of Sri Krishna by Ramanand Sagar.

Krishna Aur Kans starts with the holy city of Mathura being ravaged and destroyed by King Kans. His ruthless ways, cruelty, wickedness, and the fact the he thinks he is superior to the others helps him to destroy the beautiful and holy city and transform it into a miserable and sad place. A divine voice warns him that he will be challenged, defeated and killed by his sister Devaki and his brother-in-law’s (Vasudev) eighth son. Krishna is born as the eighth son of the couple.

Well, what happened next was quite predictable thanks to the heavy dose of mythological tales, serials and movies that we, as Indians, get to see as we grow up. Kans holds Devaki and Vasudev in a dungeon and one by one, kills the first seven sons borne by the couple. After the birth of Krishna, Vasudev secretly takes the baby all the way to Gokul after crossing the river Yamuna on a stormy night.

Kans somehow manages to learn about this escape and sends the evil witch Putna to kill baby Krishna by breast feeding the baby with poisoned milk. But he fails in his attempt as Putna was killed by baby Krishna. Determined to get rid of his nemesis, Kans sends Bakasur, a cruel wicked bird with some attributes of a vulture to kill the baby. But he too fails making Kans more and more desperate and frightened. All this is already known to us as most of us have already watched the television series. However, viewing the same in 3D with a group of kids, most of whom are unaware of the turn of events, is an entirely different and exciting experience.

The movie end on lines similar to the TV series when Krishna comes face-to-face with Kans. He defeats and kills Kans, frees his parents from the dungeon, reinstates Vasudev as the King of Mathura and ends the evil and tyrannical reign of the wicked king Kans.

The animation is effortless yet a visual delight. The many scenes where Kans is shown venting his anger are sure to give anyone goose bumps. Some other scenes in the movie where we see Krishna in his playful mood and portions where he is seen thieving butter from the village ladies (Gopis) are a delight to watch.

The voice-overs in the movie are perfect. Om Puri, who gives voice to the character of Kans, was excellent. One can easily say that no one could have done better. The evil laugh and the harsh baritone make the cartoon character alive. Yashoda’s sweet voice was rendered by Juhi Chawla. I feel that Manoj Vajpayee, who gives voice to the character of Nand, was a tad under-used.

There is also very little mention of the growing love-affair between Krishna and Radha, though in some scenes we see Radha swinging happily to the tune of the flute played by Krishna. The songs in the movie may seem a bit too much especially for the kids, but they are sweet and hummable.

Overall, the movie might be a bit lengthy keeping in mind the fact that it was made entirely for kids. However, I will not suggest missing this movie. A visual delight and great entertainment, Krishna Aur Kans is a must-see.

Hemlock Society – Review

Summary: The story of Hemlock Society is about a man who runs a workshop to help people get rid of the yearning for suicide and the turmoil brought about with the entrance of an utterly depressed girl. The moral of the story -- kill yourself if you wish but don’t influence others. This movie celebrates life in its own way and is a landmark in the Bengali Film Industry.

To be honest, Hemlock Society is the celebration of a Bengali romantic satire. It gives us a new look towards life. The main obstacle that the director Srijit Mukherjee might have faced while making this movie was the success of his previous two movies, Autograph and BaisheySrabon. While both were loved by the critics and audiences alike, the question was whether the movie has the same maturity as Autograph or can it scale the high standards set by Baishey Srabon. Keeping all comparisons aside, we can say that the movie is a beautiful celebration of life.

For people who were skeptic about the fact that a movie which is based on assisted-suicide will be dark, they were not completely wrong. The daughter, who cannot tolerate her mother, is lonely, dealing with post-breakup and professional issues – the script had all the ingredients to make a dark and gory movie. However surprisingly, the movie celebrates life. Although there are some very serious issues concerning relationships, the film is not devoid of any fun. However, just as you arestarting to have fun, a dialogue or a scene just wipes the smile off your face.

Let us now discuss the characters and how they have been portrayed. Parambrata, playing the role of Ananda Kar, does complete justice to the character. He has done complete justice to his new-found name of being the gen-next Rajesh Khanna of the Bengali Film Industry. It was a tough ask for Koel who has been portraying lively characters for most of her films.

Credits to the director for presenting her in a completely new light and let’s hope this opens up more scopes for this versatile and immensely talented actress. After a long time will we see veteran actor Dipankar Dey playing a character with so many shades. Roopa Ganguly essays the role of Koel’s stepmother with elegance.

Apart from these, we have a host of actors from the Bengali Film Fraternity playing faculty members of the Society. The host of characters include Soumitra Chatterjee (col. Samaresh Bagchi), Sabyasachi Chakraborty (Dhomoni Ghosh), Sabitri Chatterjee (Jhulon Gupta), Barun Chanda (Trenlet Biswas); Raj Chakraborty as Setu Venkatraman; Bratya Basu as Raktim Ganguly; Sudeshna Guha as Shikha Goon; and Sohag Sen (Miss CellaNeous). All these characters have their own brand of comedy and they are a treat to watch.

Another point for Srijit which has clicked is the competence and ability of his crew. The film excels in cinematography with excellent editing and synchronized background score. The Art Direction deserves special mention because of the choice of colors. Workshop rooms are painted in black covered with suicide-notes while white is the color for prayer rooms. The tracks by Anupam Roy have a sad undercurrent flowing through them.

All in all, Hemlock Society deserves to be watched by all and sundry as this movie celebrates life and also celebrates those people who know how to celebrate life.

Gangs of Wasseypur II – Review

The sequel to Gangs of Wasseypur starts with the death of Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpai). We see him getting caught in a barrage of gunshots and finally succumbing to it. The scene of his funeral is comical to a certain extent with a singer with an unusual voice singing a famous Hindi number. Immediately after this scene, we are taken back to the gruesome world of murder and mayhem that Anurag Kashyap had shown us in Gangs of Wasseypur.

This world is laden with men who mould themselves after Bollywood heroes and with revenge in their hearts; they roam around the town of Wasseypur coolly creating a realm of violence and crime. Amidst all the chaos and bloodshed, Anurag Kashyap and his crew follow a curios path of violence, humor, romance and music to bring out a revenge story that spans generations.

After watching Gangs of Wasseypur, it might seem that the sequel is lacking in parts. Despite the exuberance, you will feel the movie is nothing but a series of butchering and killing with no particular story that links them together. There are times when logic flies out of the window. The prequel took time to bring out the characters and the storyline. However in the sequel, we get to see nothing but a bunch of wannabe crime lords battling it out with guns, murdering and creating mayhem in broad daylight. It seems the characters are just moving according to the set of instructions given by the director.

One of the funny moments in the movie comes up when we see a gangster attempting to tie the string on his pajama while talking on two mobile phones. We have an edgy assassin on one phone while a spy who has been asked to follow a target is on the other phone. The scene is cleverly written and portrayed.
Chase scenes have been the forte in Gangs of Wasseypur II. But they seem to have been stretched too far. One felt that Anurag Kashyap was trying to out-do himself after the fantastic chase scenes in Black Friday. He was trying to go a notch higher. The starts in the four chase scenes in the movie are brilliant and exciting, but the brilliance and the interest seem to fade away after a few minutes.

However like Gangs of Wasseypur I, Kashyap is brilliant in bringing out the characters in the sequel. We are introduced to a group of charismatic personalities. Apart from the growing enmity between Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia) and Sardar Khan’s hash-addicted successor Faisal (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), we come to know of Perpendicular. He is Faisal’s kin who has the habit of wielding a blade in his mouth and goes around with an I-don’t-give-a-damn attitude. Faisal is a hardcore follower of Amitabh Bachchan while his half-brother Definite thinks Salman Khan is God. Faisal’s wife Mohsina is a movie-addict who sings in a queer voice at the slightest opportunity. Faisal is shown as a person who, despite his unwillingness, was dragged into the world of crime. Together with Definite, they go about carving a revenge for the murder of their family members.

The movie is a goldmine of stellar performances. Richa Chadha as the sturdy matriarch, Aditya Kumar (Perpendicular) and Huma Qureishi (Mohsina) are brilliant and brings their characters alive. However, the one person that has made a mark for himself with his brilliant performance is Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who has essayed the role of the bold Faisal Khan.

If there is any fatal mistake in the movie, it is the introduction of innumerous subplots and characters. This trend continues till the end of the movie. This one major flaw has stopped Gangs of Wasseypur II from rising above the genre of a typical revenge flick.

Finding Nemo 3D – Review

Honestly, there is nothing new to speak about the movie. Finding Nemo in 2003 and Finding Nemo 3D in 2012 are identical. However, everything seems new thanks to the 3D animation added to the original. Therefore, if anyone is the hero of the movie, it is the 3D effect. The 3D effect made the Great Barrier Reef come alive. It makes Finding Nemo 3D worth watching.

As for the story, this movie teaches us the same thing that it did in 2003 – Friendship and never-say-die attitude. It also teaches us never to back down or give up. Once again what surprises us is the very reason this movie received the Best Academy Award (Animation) in 2003 - here daddy the hero, daddy knows best, daddy is sure nothing is impossible for his son Nemo. For Nemo, he cannot see any fish stronger than his daddy.

There are enough elements in the movie for people watching it for the first time and also for those who are watching it after almost 9 years. One would surely be amazed when they get to see the beauty that lies beneath the sea and that too in 3D. Clownfish, Regal Tang, Oysters, Sharks, Whales, Sea monsters and many other sea-creatures in 3D is an effect you don’t want to miss.

I will suggest you to watch Finding Nemo 3D if you have never seen the movie before. Also watch the movie if you have seen it already, because this time around the adventure is in 3D!

Chitrangada-Review

Looking at the promotional videos of the movie, Chitrangada - The Crowning Wish, one might get the feeling that it is a personal film. You might even say that the film takes us one step closer towards a progressive society which is still coming to terms with the concept of homosexuality. Or, you might also refer this movie to be educating about same sex relations rather than preaching about the same. Whatever your opinion might be, Chitrangada - The Crowning Wish will always remain a film that you cannot ignore in the context of modern Indian cinema.

Mixing legend with realism, Rituparno Ghosh throws a lot of questions towards us while answering a few while leaving the rest open to individual understanding. How difficult is it for parents to accept the fact that their son is gay? How difficult is it for a gay man to be told repeatedly that he needs to see a doctor to treat himself? And how traumatically shabby is it for a male couple to realize that they will never be allowed to adopt a baby even when they know that biologically they can never have a baby of their own?

While it's true that movie makers overseas have plainly worn out themselves dealing with same sex dilemma and complexities, Indian cinema is slowly but gradually coming to terms with this trend. This fact will surely make Chitrangada - The Crowning Wish a cause for rejoicing. However, by looking at the movie in its totality, there is still a lot more paths to be treaded before we can finally celebrate.

The film stands due to some very commanding performances. Jisshu Sengupta has delivered one of the finest performances of his life and he portrays the role of a junkie to perfection. Minimalism has always been a forte for Anjan Dutt, and he uses this skill to play the role of a counselor to perfection. His patience helps in recounting and reliving the emotional moments of the protagonist's life.

Anasuya and Dipankar bring to mind a sense of compassion that's applicable to the modern society when they portray the role of Rituparno's parents. Sanjay Nag was a good choice for the role of the photographer in the movie. Raima Sen and Aparajita Auddy, though brief in their presence, deliver according to how the role has been fleshed out for them.

Abhik Mukhopadhyay’s cinematography ensures Chitrangada is a visual treat. Debajyoti Mishra's selection of songs including the background score is stimulating.

However, the film belongs to Rituparno. Rituparno comes up with an interesting performance putting to rest all speculations that he will portray the role of a gay protagonist well as he is aware of the psyche of a gay male. The quandary of wanting to change sex, the selflessness of being able to go undergo sex-change surgery just for the sake of love and then accept rejection only to be able to call out to the same person again - it would have been an uphill task for any actor to depict all these on screen.

The best scene in the movie is the poignant scene of a mother and son when the mother says: "I gave birth to this body, which is yours... I have a right to know, whatever goes on in this body. I have a right to know, if it is changing, transforming..."

We know that all of Rituparno’s mannerisms do not appeal to us. It would be more unappealing to those who are numb to the wants of homosexual desires or not matured enough to the idea of watching physical intimacy between two males on screen. For these, Chitrangada – The Crowing Wish will seem to be an excuse to take the help of myth and mould it with reality just to prove a point.

Interestingly, Chitrangada as a film that will help you evolve as a movie goer. The film goes beyond vague explorations of the predicament of which gender to use to address a man in the process of being a woman. It questions, as it were, the uselessness of looking for eternalness. This is a movie, which one must watch with an open mind and for Rituparno Ghosh.

Bol Bachchan Review

Summary: To put it simply, the movie is a comedy of errors. And this comedy of errors may well give Rohit Shetty his next 100 crore Hit!

Comedy-of-errors has been the most explored areas in drollery. The humor growing out of false identities has been explored by many directors and producers in Bollywood since its inception. Some very popular films based on this sub-genre are “Golmaal” (Hrishikesh Mukherjee), Coolie No.1 (David Dhawan) and the Housefull series by Sajid Khan.

Rohit Shetty, the director of the hilarious Golmaal trilogy, also tried his hand at making a film based on comedy of errors by making the movie “All The Best”. The film was a success. However, Rohit had created a brand out of Golmaal movies. Whenever we talk of Rohit the first thing that comes to our minds are the hilarious characters in the movie that provided us many laugh-out-loud moments. Rohit has also shown us a glimpse of his expertise in the action genre with Singham. Now, he tries his hand once again at the comedy-of-errors genre with his latest flick Bol Bachchan, which is a rip-off of the cult classic Hrishikesh Mukherjee film, Golmaal.

In the movie, Ajay Devgan plays a wrestler and the most powerful man in the village. His character has been inspired from the character essayed by late Utpal Dutt in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal. The character played by Amol Palekar in Golmaal has been portrayed by Abhishek Bachchan in the new movie. However, there are a few changes that have been incorporated into the characters. While we saw Utpal Dutt had an affinity towards pure Hindi Language in Golmaal, Ajay Devgn’s character is so much influenced by English that he translates every proverb in Hindi into English. This makes up for some hilarious one-liners like “when the elders getting cozy, young don’t get nosy” or “he will die Tommy’s death”! Amol Palekar had played the role of a singing teacher and also posed as his twin brother. Abhishek Bachchan, in the movie Bol Bachchan, portrays the role of a dance teacher and also poses as his twin brother. To make the character more genuine and in tune with the audience, Abhishek has played the usual sissy act when posing as the dance teacher.

Rohit Shetty has followed the 1979 classic to the hilt. That is the main reason why his movie has not wandered off at any point. He was aware that it was pointless to try and be better than the original cult classic, therefore he sticks to the pilot act and has kept the classic moments and characters intact. Therefore, in Bol Bachchan as well, we will see Archana Puran Singh (who plays the role of Abhishek’s mother and also poses as her twin) entering through the backdoor, just like Dina Pathak’s character in the 1979 movie.
To make the movie more grasping, Rohit Shetty has included one character in his movie and that is of Ajay’s rival cousin from the neighboring village, played with elegance by Neeraj Vora. This gives Rohit a scope to try his trademark action sequences which involves blowing up cars and mindless fight scenes. However, sometimes we feel that he might have over-done in a few scenes. Certain scenes like Abhishek’s dance sequence before interval could have been curtailed. The non sense English by Ajay seems a bit over-the-board and after some time, one fails to grasp on to the humor that his one-liners present.

Nonetheless, Rohit Shetty does not complicate the script and keeps it simple. There is no slapstick humor and the scenes are genuinely to be laughed at. All the characters have been portrayed with perfection. The most notable name will be Abhishek Bachchan who plays the role of his life.

Final Verdict, Bol Bachchan is a family entertainer and will certainly make you laugh and laugh till you drop!

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter – Review

The story revolves around Abe (Abraham Lincoln) who had witnessed a horrifying event during his childhood. He was witness to his mother’s death from a vampire bite. This changed his life forever. He decided to end every “living” (dead) vampire and chose to become the Vampire Hunter. However, this battle with Vampire symbolized a bigger battle which AbrahamLincoln fought and that was against Slavery.
To be honest, even Abraham Lincoln would surely have laughed after watching this mix of history and fiction. This movie will keep you engaged from beginning to end as you will find it difficult and sometimes tiresome to distinguish between fact and fantasy. Life will become a lot easier for you if you have read the novel with the same title by Seth Grahame-Smith as the movie is a copy of the novel. Let us analyze whether the movie actually lives up to the expectations.

The setting of the film is what is should be. The movie has the perfect setting and you feel like evil spirits will jump from any corner of the screen. The background is mainly old European. Sepia and black are the predominant colors that are used in the film and add to the gory nature of the film. Visually speaking, the movie is a treat to watch. There are lots of fireworks, blood-tarnished fangs of vampires, gothic architecture; music which is in harmony with the flow of the flick. The movie also has bats and more bats. There is a lot of fast paced action even though the pre-interval half of the movie drags. The blood bath depicted is very realistic and you actually feel at a point that vampires are actually responsible for the blood and the bodies strewn around.

Although mentioned earlier that the pre-interval half of the movie is a drag, nevertheless there are many scenes that are actually worth watching. For example the scene where Mary Todd uses Abraham’s hat as a tool to rise up to his height in order to kiss him is innovative, to say the least. In this movie, the leading lady (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is an interesting character. In the first half of the movie, we see this woman desperately on the look-out for extraordinary adventures. Early in to the second half, we see her as the sire that has suffered the loss of her son. Later, she takes up the mantle of being the woman responsible for the success of Abraham Lincoln.

The debonair, calm and dangerous-when-matters-vampire Henry, played by Dominic Cooper, is by far the best vampire that has been portrayed ever. Benjamin Walker as Abraham Lincoln looks bleak initially, sometime even overshadowed by the characters surrounding him. However, things take a turn when he becomes President. He essays the role of the President to the hilt with his dominating and soaring attitude. Even he looks mesmerizing tired and lanky eyes.

Finally, a word about Timur Bekmambetov, the director of the movie. Timur has done complete justice to Seth Grahame-Smith’s novel and has also added a few of his ideas to make a gripping movie out of another blood-dripping novel. The movie could have been a bit more interesting if the director had added a few slices of the popular speeches of Lincoln against slavery.

All in all, in case you are looking for a movie which has a happy ending, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is not the one to choose. This movie does not belong to the meek hearted but for the one who loves bloodshed and likes their vampires to be free from humanity.

How to Beat the Google Algorithm

In the world of website content writing, Google has been the major and the most preferred search engine for readers as well as writers. It is a fact that mere article writing and posting is not sufficient. In content writing, people have been coming up with new ways to beat the Google Algorithm so that they can maintain their top position. These ways, are sometimes, unethical. Keeping this in mind, Google has reprogrammed its algorithm in the April of 2012. It has also come up with a new version known as the Panda Algorithm.
The main reason for the change was to eliminate non-beneficial websites. But due to this change, many people and organizations providing website content writing services were also affected as their well-planned and top quality websites were also hampered with.

Let us look at the changes in detail so that we can find some loopholes to counter this algorithm.

Backlink Spams
This was one of the major reasons for the changes made to the algorithm and that is to counter and eliminate unwanted and low-standard backlinks. As we all know that in content writing creating backlinks to increase traffic and subsequently popularity is very important. However, it was noticed that some users created backlinks just to increase the traffic. Backlinks were there just for the sake of it and they had no other valid reason for their existence. They were placed just to increase the rankings.
Solution: Make sure that all your backlinks are from reputed websites and that they are related to the content of your article or blog. It is very easy in website content writing to place backlinks just for the sake of it. Concentrate more on increasing the number of human visitors rather than on creating unnecessary backlinks.

Over-use of Keywords
One of the major reasons why authentic content writing websites were affected was because their content was over-crowded with keywords. Google as well as other article directories always had set standards about the percentage of keywords that could be used in an article and crossing the said limit by even a small amount could spell trouble.
Solution: Do not over-use your keywords. Instead of concentrating on one keywords, use multiple keywords while article writing and posting.

Duplicate or “Spun” Content
In content writing, creating duplicate contents has become very easy with the help of many duplication software that are available in the market. These spun articles easily pass content checking software like Copyscape and you are ready to post them wherever you want. This was made to be stopped after the recent upgrade by Google.
Solution: There can be only one solution -- Provide100% original SEO content. There will always be a shortcut for you to take. Try and tread on the safer track for once.

Eliminate Link Bait
Google had decided to eliminate all “link baits” i.e. low-quality articles filled with links towards a particular site.
Solution: Again, providing 100% original SEO content is the best solution in this case. Make sure that all your content writing is original and actually helpful for others.
To sum up, do not be dependent on Google only for your traffic. There are many examples of websites that have overcome this upgrade by Google without any hassle. This was mainly because they used all other resources like social media, Yahoo, offline sources and others to increase their traffic. Be wise and withstanding any changes by Google will not be a problem for you.
