Oscars Night is Incomplete without Music: A Glimpse of Performances by Music World’s Biggies!

The Oscars are one of the most watched shows every year with attendance and performances by some of the biggest stars of the industry. This year’s Oscars are not going to be any different – there will musical performances by the who’s who of the music industry. Like every year, even this year there will be surprises galore, according to the Academy.  Nevertheless, there are certain performances that you cannot simply miss out on Sunday night.

Some of the performances to watch out for!

Of the several performances that have been lined up for the night, the performance by Common and John Legend is the one that is highly anticipated. They are expected to create magic and set the stage on fire, if one goes by their performance at the recently concluded Grammys event. Additionally, they have also been considered to be the favorites to win the statue. As a result, their performance maybe extraordinary than usual. Another performance that everyone is watching out for is by the popular American band, Maroon 5. Even though the band has not received any nomination, the lead singer of the band, Adam Levine has. He has sung the track “Lost Stars” (“Begin Again”).

Special performances by Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Hudson and Lady Gaga

The other notable stars who are slated to perform on Sunday are Anna Kendrick, Jennifer Hudson and Lady Gaga. Even though they are not nominated this year as well as are not part of any songs that have been nominated for this year’s music awards at the Oscars, they are expected to put up “special performances”.  Although not much is known about their performances, it seems like the Academy has thought of doing something spectacular with these three women. Rita Ora is another instance of not being nominated for any category even though Diane Warren, the song writer of a track of which she is the face is a nominee.

Tim McGraw to perform Glen Campbell’s “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”

The country singer Tim McGraw will be performing at the Oscars and will sing Glen Campbell’s “I’m Not Gonna Miss You”. Since the legendary singer is unwell, Tim McGraw has taken up the task of singing the singer’s composition from “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me”. Many insiders are hoping that Campbell and Julian Raymond, his co-writer will win a statue for their song and their chances are bright following their win at the Grammys. Last but not the least, the Oscars night will also feature performances by Tegan and Sara along with The Lonely Island.

Oscars 2015: A Foretaste and Forecasts

On Sunday, eight exceptional films will be fighting it out at the 87th Oscars Award which is set to take place at LA’s Dolby Theater. These eight films are “The Theory of Everything”, “Boyhood,” “Selma,” “Birdman,”  “Whiplash,” “American Sniper,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and “The Imitation Game”. Of the eight, the movie that is predicted to win big on Sunday night is the Michael Keaton’s starrer, “Birdman”.  The movie has picked up several awards during this year’s award season that included the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Producers Guild Award and the Directors Guild Award.

“Birdman” is expected to win the Best Picture honor

According to an award analyst of The Hollywood Reporters, statistics are on the side of the Michael Keaton movie and all indications point to the fact that it will win the Best Picture category. At the same time, the award analyst has pointed out that the one aspect of the movie that goes against it is that this will be the first time in the history of an award presentation that a movie which has won the Best Picture prize failed to get a nomination for film editing. The award analyst also believes that the only contender to this movie is the Bradley Cooper starrer, “American Sniper”.

Redmayne is the predicted winner for Best Actor

Besides the buzz surrounding the Best Picture category, the category for Best Actor is also buzzing with activity and predictions. The eight actors who have been nominated for this year’s Oscars are Bradley Cooper, Michael Keaton, Eddie Redmayne, Steve Carell and Benedict Cumberbatch. Industry experts have opined that Keaton, Cooper and Redmayne will be the front contenders for this award. While Michael Keaton has the star power, Redmayne’s performance as Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything” is being said to be the most likely winner. And if one goes by the past record of winners of Best Actor for the Oscars, all ten of them had won the SAG award and this year Redmayne had bagged the prize.

The winners for the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories have been locked!

The Best Actress category, on the other hand, does not have insiders worried and speculating. All indications point to Julianne Moore whose performance as an Alzheimer inflicted woman in “Still Alice” has swept every single award this award season. The other nominees include Felicty Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Marion Cotillard and Rosamund Pike. The winner for the Supporting Actress category has also been predicted. Insiders and people in the know-how are going with Patricia Arquette. The other contenders are Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Keira Knightley and Laura Dern.

Fashion Trends and Predictions for Oscars 2015

Like every year, even this year the 87th Academy Awards will be a show-stopping and statement-making occasion with the red carpet flooded with immense glamour and stunners. To look their best, stars and their stylists begin months in advance with much deliberations and planning going into finding the perfect gown. Generally, designers send over their sketches to the actresses and their celebrity stylists towards the end of the year. And it takes months before a decision is arrived at. At the same time, last minute changes are also not new ranging from stylists grabbing gowns from the recently concluded New York Fashion Week to last minute decision change by stars. A case in point is the trade from Valentino to Prada by Anne Hathaway at the 2013 Oscars.

Sequined dresses and gowns are the hot options for Oscars 2015!

Despite last minute changes, one can still predict the fashion trends and choices that the stars are going to make at this year’s 87th Academy Awards. Among the various trends, the choice of sequin dresses and gowns seem to be a hit among actresses of all ages on the various red carpet events with the Oscars being the last of the award season. For instance, Dakota Johnson of “Fifty Shades of Grey” fame had worn a silver sequined gown by Sonia Rykiel  at SNL’s  40th anniversary celebration.  Julianne Moore, on the other hand, had chosen a custom-made Givenchy gown for the Globes.

Sheer and pantsuit options are the other hot trends!

Sheer is turning out to be another hot favorite with celebrities at this year’s award season. Many Hollywood celebrities are opting for skin revealing sheer gowns and dresses. For example, singers Meghan Trainor and Jessie J had chosen sheer dress options for the 2015 Grammy Awards. While Trainor opted for a lacy Galia Lahav evening dress, Jessie J wore a Ralph & Russo gown. Besides the profusion of sequin dresses and gowns in sheer fabric, the list of red carpet looks also includes jumpsuits and pantsuits. For the Golden Globes, Emma Stone showed off her feminine side by sporting slacks with a big bow at the back along with a sequined bustier. On the other side of the age scale, the forty-six year old actress, Jennifer Aniston, looked ravishing in a Gucci tuxedo that showed off skin for the Critics Choice Awards.

Zuhair Murad is the hottest designer right now!

Among the various designers, the Lebanese fashion designer, Zuhair Murad has been a favorite at all the red carpet events this year. His creations have been worn by stars from Jennifer Lopez to Portia de Rossi and Chrissy Teigen to Katy Perry.

I, Frankenstein is a Monster of a Movie

Rating 3 Out of 10

2014 has started with the release of the Australian-American fantasy action film I, Frankenstein. It released on January 24, 2014 and is based on the graphic novel (and original screenplay) by Kevin Grevioux. The film has been has written and directed by Stuart Beattie. Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy, Yvonne Strahovski, Miranda Otto, Socratis Otto, Jai Courtney and Kevin Grevioux are the stars of this monster movie.

The film starts with the death of Dr. Victor Frankenstein who dies after being frozen to death. He is buried in the family cemetery by the monster (Aaron Eckhart). After the fateful event, he is attacked by demons who try to kill him. But the monster kills one of the demons and is saved by gargoyles in the process. Gargoyle queen Lenore (Miranda Otto) and their commander, Gideon (Jai Courtney) name the monster Adam and invite him in their war against the demons. But Adam refuses the offer and prefers to stay isolated in remote places where he fights the demons with the weapons given to him by Lenore. The demons never cease to try and capture him to gain the secret of how to reanimate a corpse. He comes back after two hundred years to find a modern society where the evil demon leader Prince Naberiu (Bill Nighy), who disguised as businessman Charles Wessex and his right hand man Dekar (Kevin Grevioux) are planning to raise an army by bringing dead people to life with the help of scientist Terra Wade (Yvonne Strahovski). They also send a group of demons led by his most formidable warrior, Zuriel, to attack the gargoyles' cathedral and capture Adam so they can unlock the secret to give life through him. Now it is Adam’s mission to stop the demons from succeeding in their plan.

There is really not much to write about the film. Other than the average special effects and mediocre acting, nothing else can be termed passable or bearable. Whether it is the background music by Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil or photography or cinematography, everything leaves you with a feeling that things could have been better. There is a marked discrepancy in the film, starting with the title which is I, Frankenstein, when the film is about Frankenstein’s monster.

Only watch this film if you have absolutely nothing to do and have to pass your time somehow. Though my guess is that, you will be able to take a long nap in the movie theater itself.

“The Best South Indian Food Joint in Kolkata!”

Rating - 3.5 Out of 5
A South Indian Restaurant that can easily be compared to YUMMRAJ’s favorite South Indian Restaurant, Murugan Idly Chennai is Jyoti Vihar, Kolkata. Located at Ho Chi Minh Sarani, near Theatre Road, the place is always full of shoppers, families, office goers and students. The secret to this is the superior quality of South Indian food they serve here.
Jyoti Vihar is a small South Indian restaurant which now is a part of Kolkata’s heritage. The vintage (in the true sense of the word!) interiors of Jyoti Vihar with mosaic flooring, the wood paneling and old style table and chairs will remind you of your childhood days, probably because they are the same chairs you sat on then! This eatery breathes nostalgia, great memories and heritage in its every corner. If you don’t believe me, ask any regular here and they will tell you.
Well, their service is quite fast and courteous. The restaurant is clean and hygienic. They serve delicious South Indian food at slightly steeper than earlier prices – I know as I visit this restaurant every week! During lunch time, at around 1:00 in the afternoon the place full of people and you WILL have to wait for your turn and get a token.
Their idly with sambhar (that they serve hot) is fresh, soft and beautifully steamed – some say it is the best in Calcutta if not the country (I’ve eaten all over the south and believe me, it is not an exaggerated claim at all)! Their wadas are crispy outside and soft inside. The ghee Butter Masala Dosa they make will drive you crazy, and is easily the best butter sada Dosa one can have this side of town. Jyoti Vihar serves you the most piping hot food - their milk Upma and the Dahi Vada are outstanding!  The coconut chutney is excellent. It is thick and grainy, topped with roasted urad dal. Their paper Dosas are crispy and light on your stomach though not their strong point. One special mention here - they also serve no-onion sambhar on request, so if you don’t like onion you can always ask for their no onion sambhar.
To complete your South Indian meal, they serve some nice filter coffee as well. I would highly recommend Jyoti Vihar to all food lovers. Even if you don’t like South Indian food, try South Indian food here - you may just fall in love with South Indian cuisine.

“Open Oven – A Decent Bakery with Fair Prices”

Rating – 3.5 out of 5

My last visit to Camac Street introduced me to the King of bakery and desserts there called the Open Oven. They make excellent desserts at decent prices. Their cakes are fresh and delicious. It is one of the better bakeries in town.

It is a nice place with polite and courteous staff. The ambience is just like any other bakery. They serve good desserts just like their namesake in Delhi.

After I came to know about Open Oven, Kolkata, I order cakes on all occasions here. I have become a big fan of their cakes and frequently visit this place. This is by far the most pocket friendly bakery I have ever visited.

Their Chocolate truffle cake and Butterscotch cake are undoubtedly the crown jewels of this confectionary shop. The truffle cake easily melts in your mouth giving a rich heavenly taste of pure chocolate. Being a die- hard chocolate fan, it suits my palate perfectly. The texture of this cake is very smooth and the chocolate truffle cream is heavenly. A hint of bitterness in the butterscotch cake along with their amazing icing decor adds a compliment to its taste.

The other cake options available there like Black Forest Gateaux, Chocolate cake, Coffee gateaux etc, are also popular though I have not tried them yet. In the pastries section, I am a big fan of their Black forest Pastry. Their chocolate truffle tart is also good.

Their chicken quiche and chicken croissant sandwich are exceptionally good and great for tea time or later in the evening. Their Paneer Patty and Lebanese roll are also fresh and well prepared.

Pretty much everything I have tried I liked. They also have pretty decent prices when compared to other bakeries.

“Luscious Food at Decent Prices”

Rating – 3.5 out of 5

Mission Café (located adjacent to the Chandni Chowk metro station) is a place which is hard to miss. It is a fast food cum standing restaurant very famous among both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. This food joint is visited by all the commercial locale of central Kolkata. They have a vast menu which includes Chinese, North Indian, South Indian and Fast food.

It is a decent place with reasonable prices and awesome food. I have visited this place a number of times but the taste of their food remains unchanged in the last twenty years – a truly amazing level of consistency! The staff is very courteous and attentive. The service is generous and fast. The only drawback of this café is that its ambience is too old, though it is small, it is a neat and hygienic eatery.

My top pick at Mission café is Chole Bhature and plain Cheese Dosa. For beverages I love to pick cold coffee with cream and their Kesar tea. They are amazing. The pindi Chana which they serve with Bhature are a treat to my taste buds, the Bhature are wafer thin but too oily. The Cheese Dosa has lots of cheese filled in it and is very yummy – you will be hard pressed to find a better one in Central / North Kolkata.

The garden chop served during breakfast is a hot seller here and they run out of stock very soon. Also, one can try their Paneer Butter Masala, Baby Naan and Idlis which are very popular. The rose milkshake is nice and has had the same taste over years.

I will highly recommend this place to all foodies who haven’t tried their food that are in the area during lunch or tea time. Situated in the heart of the city’s business hub, this place serves delicious food which is light on your pocket and is 100% value for money.
