FOOD “PARADISE” IN BEHALA!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Paradise restaurant in Behala is definitely a food paradise. It is one of those restaurants where you get not only pocket friendly but tasty Chinese fare. For those on a tight budget, this is one option that will never fail you. This is a simple and uncluttered establishment. Though the place is plain and simple looking; it is neat and clean. The place is also a great option for take away and home delivery.

Though it is a small food joint, the place exudes coziness and comfort. The food takes very little time to be served; this is because of the efficient and well trained staff of the restaurant that this is so.

Their vegetarian and non vegetarian options as starters and side dishes are many and varied. To begin with, their veg and chicken momos as snack options are not only tasty but filling as well. Equally popular are their other veg and non veg items like drums of heaven, lat Mei kai, pepper chicken, golden fried prawns and many more; and veg starters like chilli mushroom, chilli baby corn and chilli potato. They make some of the best well seasoned food in the whole of Behala.  Their soups (like tom yum soup, hot and sour soup, and manchow soup) have the power to drive away all your blues. The broth is not only well prepared but the flavours of spiciness and tanginess in the soup are well balanced. Their rice and noodle staples are scrumptious and stomach filling options.

The well priced food is not only tasty but generous in quantity as well. One person might face a problem in finishing the dish that he has ordered for himself. At the same time, the quality of food can be compared to those being served by high end restaurants.

TASTY TREATS FROM THE TASTE MAKER!

Rating: 3 out of 5

The Taste Maker definitely knows how to make tasty Chinese delicacies. The food is not only cheap but tastes excellent as well. A word of caution though, the fare is mostly tilted towards the spicier side; therefore it might be too hot and unpalatable for some. In other words, the food is cooked in the typical Indian Chinese style. The place is best for takeaways as the environment is not suited for a private or family dining experience, yet they do provide very limited sitting options for those who wish to dine there. Besides the good food, the serving time is also quick and fast; the servers are not only attentive but prompt as well.

Coming to their food - it is mouthwatering, fresh and fast Chinese fare. To begin with, their soups are simply faultless. The soups, whether it is hot and sour soup, sweet corn soup or clear soup, are all light and well seasoned soup items. But soups like hot and sour soup and manchow soup can be very spicy for those who like them mildly spiced.

Among their extensive fried rice dishes, items like chilli garlic fried rice, Sichuan fried rice and Hong Kong fried rice are not only excellent options but go well with almost all their veg and non veg side dishes. Even their noodle staples are soft and light textured.  Among their mouthwatering starter options, it is their chicken appetizers that shine out. Dishes like pepper chicken, chicken gold coin, chicken momos and drums of heaven are must haves from this restaurant. Along with regular Chinese staples, they also serve some innovative Chinese delicacies like Taipei prawn or fish or chicken, bamboo shoot cooked with chicken, pineapple chicken (an interesting taste!) or fish. Their preparations are always on the lighter side and you don’t feel heavy after eating their food. Worth a shot!

A POPULAR FOOD JOINT!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Nandini is a very popular food joint in the Behala area of Kolkata. The place serves awesome Chinese and Indian delicacies. This place is ideal for a family dine out; the ambience is soothing with eye pleasing décor. The place exudes simplicity and comfort. The seating arrangements have been well planned and well laid out. The service is fast and efficient. The food is served within ten to fifteen minutes of ordering for them. The servers are not only courteous but informative as well. They even offer to guide you in food selection.

They have on offer a wide array of food options in their Chinese section. For instance, the fried rice offerings contain some exotic and innovative options that might surprise you. Thus, you have fried rice options like egg wrapped fried rice, wood ear fried rice, garlic fried rice and ginger capsicum fried rice.

Their lamb and crab dishes are not only delicious but filling as well. Lamb dishes like lamb in hot garlic sauce or ginger onion sauce or green chilli sauce are not only innovative but lip smacking fare. Likewise, they have on offer some wholesome and tasty crab options like chilli crab and Sichuan crab. The same can be said for their other meat dishes like Manchurian chicken, Sichuan chicken, chilli fish and prawns cooked in sauces selected by you.

While only a select few restaurants in Kolkata offer dim sum options; very few offer lamb momos and lamb suimais as dim sum options. The sizes and portions of their dimsums are ample and filling to say the least.  Besides the Chinese fare, the place is value for money for their Indian offerings. You can take your pick from their well seasoned tandoori items, biryanis and other veg and non veg options. Though the dishes might be spelled incorrectly, they are cooked perfectly. The food quantity and quality justifies the food prices printed in the menu.

Surya Mahal - The name goes well with the Rajasthani food they serve

Rating: 4 out of 5

Last year, during my Rajasthan trip while we were on our way to our hotel from the Jaipur railway station, we stopped at Surya Mahal for breakfast, though it was almost 10AM. This food joint is very close to the Sanganeri Gate and we got the glimpse of the beautiful architecture of this area from our car just a few minutes before we dropped into this restaurant.

We all were quite hungry and exhausted after long journey from Ajmer to Jaipur. But as we reached, we were so warmly greeted by the staff that our exhaustion disappeared right there. They probably realized that we were tourists, and their manager (I am not sure if he was THE manager) approached us with a pleasing smile and asked us where we were from. We replied Kolkata, and soon the person shared his opinions and experiences about his visit to Kolkata with us. In the meantime, we placed our order and he also guided us in choosing the right options after understanding our respective tastes. We placed an order for Masala Kulcha’s, Gatte ki sabzi, Rajasthani thali, a Barn Mexicana Burger and coffee. The restaurant staff was quite fast and served us within 10 minutes. In those ten minutes, the manager suggested some places for us to visit in the city.

As soon as our orders were served, he excused himself allowing us to share quality time amongst ourselves while relishing their beautiful preparations. We were already hungry, and after getting such awesome food, we relished every bite of it. Each item was lovingly cooked and the Gatte ki sabzi was just out of the world. We were very happy and satisfied with our meal to say the least! The breakfast (or brunch) was really wholesome. No compromise with quantity or quality, and at the same time, the price was also quite reasonable.

To give an unbiased rating to this food joint, I must rate it as 4/5 with breakups like:
Food: Awesome - 5/5
Service: Very good - 4.5/5
Ambience: Average - 3/5 as the ambience was very simple with a tinge of Rajasthani interior décor and decent sitting arrangements.

DROP IN @ MUSTARD!

Rating: 3 out of 5

Mustard is among the very few affordable restaurants in the E M Bypass area. The place is a must go for their moderately priced North Indian and Chinese fare. Both these cuisines are decently prepared here. The Chinese fare can be compared to the type you get in Tangra.  The ambience and décor is ordinary, yet the place exudes coziness and comfort. The service is punctual and the staff is courteous and friendly. The food quantity and quality are brilliant with a variety of options. Coming to the food, all the items listed in their VERY short menu are available.

Vegetarian and non vegetarian options as starters and side dishes (for both the Chinese and north Indian fare) are many and varied. For this review, I will limit my food suggestions to only the Chinese cuisine. To start with, their snack options (both veg and non veg items) are popular with many diners. Some of the fast moving non veg items are chilli chicken (dry), drums of heaven, and golden fried prawns. Equally appetizing are their veg starters - chilli mushroom, chilli baby corn and chilli potato. Though their vegetarian side dishes for the main course are very limited, you can take your pick from their lip smacking non veg preparations like hot garlic chicken,  Hong Kong chicken,  Manchurian fish,  sweet and sour prawn,  Sichuan prawn, and so on. Alternatively, instead of chicken, you can try their lamb options like barbeque lamb and Sichuan lamb. Their meat portions are not only filling but well cooked. Noodles and fried rice items were equally well prepared and the quantity available is generous and ample enough for two. The dishes do not leave a heavy feeling in your stomach. They are light and non greasy preparations.

This place is essentially a pocket friendly and value-for-money kind of restaurant that serves regular Chinese delicacies.

Foreigner? Visit Niros for sure! Indian? Best of luck!

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

As I have already mentioned in other reviews, I was on a trip to Rajasthan last year, and while I was there, I visited a number of restaurants. Niros was one of those eating hubs we visited on the day we visited Hawa Mahal. It was around 3 PM when we entered the place to have our lunch after exploring the famous (but really badly kept and sadly dilapidated) Hawa Mahal. The restaurant was very nicely decorated with simple but elegant decorative pieces.

We (my friends and I) settled down comfortably at a 4-seater table. The seats are really comfortable to relax in as they are designed in a sofa style with soft cushions. From the ambience of this place, we were under the illusion that the service must be very good, but when no one came forward to greet us while we were entering our impression slowly changed. Within a few minutes, the waiter came with a menu and placed it on our table without even a smile on his face. We had a huge appetite for lunch as it was almost 3PM, so we deliberately ignored all this and totally concentrated on the menu. From their Rajasthani delicacies, we chose Lal Maans and switched over to Chinese preparations where we chose Veg Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken in Sichuan Sauce and Sichuan Fish Dry. They served our dishes within 15 minutes. The Lal Maans was really awesome, prepared typically in Rajasthani style with red chilli powder to bring out that tempting color in the preparation. The other items were also very good, though slightly different from the taste that we usually have in Kolkata.

Coming to the most important part of our dining experience, their behavior…atrocious! While we were relishing our food and were about to finish, we called a waiter to order another plate of Veg Fried Rice. The man replied firmly, “No more orders please…We will close the restaurant now…We are only waiting for you to complete”, and sited the reason for temporary closure because of Diwali approaching and they needed to clean up the restaurant before the festival. We were so surprised that we hurriedly finished the rest and made our payment. The rates (as you can already see in Zomato’s menu list) are quite expensive. While we were making our exit, a group of foreigners entered. Much to our surprise, they greeted the foreigners in a very nice manner and offered them a menu card while guiding them to their seats. Then, no Diwali excuse - nothing. Is this the behavior expected from an Indian to another Indian? Later, while sharing this experience with a local there, we heard that many stores and restaurants do this, mainly to make more profit from foreigners; rather, to loot the foreigners as they are not at all familiar with the place.

Full of tantalizing Italian delicacies with very poor service @ Little Italy

Rating: 2 out of 5

Situated at Prithviraj Road very near Hotel Janak Palace, I dropped in at Little Italy last year when I was on a short trip to Rajasthan. Jaipur is really a wonderful city and the authentic Rajasthan cuisine here is also very delectable, whether it is from a road side stall or a top rated restaurant. But as you already know - I am very fond of Italian cuisine, and could not resist a glance at the pink city’s Little Italy while on my way to Hotel Janak Palace. So, I made up my mind to drop in.

I hopped into the restaurant with my friend as we both have a good appetite for Italian food. As we entered the place with a wholesome appetite looking forward to tasting Italian recipes after a long time, initially we were not too bothered with the ambience and the hospitality. But as time went by, we realized that the staff here is not at all friendly.

The ambience was simple - not too extravagant but beautifully maintained. We settled down comfortably, but all alone. To my surprise, not a single waiter approached us with a welcoming smile or offered to serve us! However, I ignored this attitude and concentrated on the menu. There was an array of delicacies in the list with a short description about each item alongside.  After about 10 minutes after we had entered the restaurant, a waiter came to take our order, though there were no other diners to attend. I wanted to take some help from the waiter in choosing the right option and asked him about how the Cannelloni Alla Fiorentina was. Much to our surprise, the waiter rudely told us to consult the menu saying that everything was written on it. We were simply stunned at such behavior (so much for the rich history of culture and hospitality in the land of the Rajputs!). We were very annoyed but didn’t linger on the matter much, as we were just tourists and not familiar about this restaurant.

We had Puttanesca Pasta with extra cheese, Spinaci Salsa and finally the Cannelloni Alla Fiorentina. Each of these preparations was really good (and quite expensive as well!). Cost would not have been a factor if the service was good. Moreover, since Jaipur is such a popular tourist spot and draws tourists from distant countries, the restaurant’s service here must be improved to guide tourists properly in choosing the right dish.

My final verdict for all food lovers with a great Italian appetite must be: If you are in Jaipur, do visit this place to satisfy your taste buds with their tantalizing Italian preparations, but don’t expect any warm hospitality or gratifying service from the staff there. Simply go and concentrate on your food.
