“Zero Ambience But a Perfect Place to Have Snacks”

Rating - 3 out of 5

A place exactly relevant to its name “Street Café”, located at Lake Town is a tiny little roadside place which is a perfect place for some snacks. It has a small seating arrange inside but a better option are the plastic chairs in front of the café on the footpath. Their service is fast and they have pocket friendly pricing.

Street Café is an all Vegetarian place. They serve sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, etc. My favorite here is the cheesy burger with extra cheese. They say “No one makes better sandwiches than us” - I don’t totally agree with this statement but they do make nice veg sandwiches. They take a lot of care in trying to cook a perfect sandwich or burger for you. They have a vast choice of sandwiches in their small menu and some of the sandwiches which we’ve tried on our visits to Street Café are exotic Italian cottage cheese, American corn bell pepper, veggie Cheese and veggie farm fresh. They add a lot of mayonnaise into their sandwiches, which I personally appreciate. Their pizzas are not very good when compared to their burgers and sandwiches and are best avoided.

Coming to their sip and brew section they serve great choco nutty and strawberry frappe’s. I good thing about this café is that you can see your food being cooked in front of you. They had a neat kitchen, and apparently have been maintaining decent standards since they opened up.

It is a good place for a random hangout or when you are feeling really hungry and want to have some nice burgers and sandwiches at amazingly low prices.

"Tasty Homely Food”

Rating - 3.5 out of 5

Calcuttans are known to be tremendous food lovers. You can never take Calcutta out of the heart of a Calcuttan. The food of Calcutta has a plethora of cuisines to offer and anyone who visits Calcutta is sure to fall in love with the food here.

One such culinary destination offering a great variety of food that is second to none with immense hospitality and flavor is KAKA TEA! Located at Mangoe Lane, Dalhousie BBD Bagh, it is a place which is very easy to locate. Located in a place which has some great food joints in every lane and by-lane, this food hub is listed on the top of every office-goers and student’s list. This place has no ambience at all and you have to stand and eat – and it is still really popular! The ambience of this place is created by the little gossip and laughter of office goers and students who take a little break from their boring schedule to relax here.

They operate for breakfast, lunch and snacks and the place is always full (yes! FULL), with dozens of people coming in to eat their lip smacking food. A cup of chai is a must have at KAKA TEA and there are always a number of people waiting for their famous chai. The samosas and kachoris they serve piping hot are amazing as are their hot gulab jamuns, which melt in your mouth in a blink of an eye. Their menu for breakfast and lunch keeps changing every day so you may get different food on every visit.

An awesome food joint to visit if you are in this extremely busy office area in Calcutta.

“Ideal for Health Conscious Frozen Dessert Lovers”

Rating - 3.5 out of 5

If you are an ice cream lover just like me looking for a healthier alternative to ice cream, the best place to step in to is Yogen fruz. It is a well known name in frozen desserts and currently has only two outlets in Kolkata. After it opened its new store in Salt Lake, it has become my favourite destination for a healthier dessert whenever I am in the area.

Coming to its interiors and decor, it shares a narrow stretch of space with Subway. It has contemporary, red and white seating for two by the huge glass facade overlooking the street. This is possibly the highlight of this place, as you can enjoy your dessert with a view of the street. It has glass counters which display an array of delicious frozen fruits, toppings and much more. The staff here is friendly and polite.

The wall mounted backlit menu gives four prominent varieties of softy style “Soft Serve” frozen desserts, two in ones “Mix It Flavours”, exotic “U Sensations” and fruity “Smoothies”. My favourite is plain vanilla with a topping of dark chocolate chips or chocolate topped with wafers and white chocolate chips. A must try at Yogen fruz is their cheesecake U Sensation. They have more than 20 varieties of toppings to choose from. Yes, I know that adding toppings defeats the purpose of having a ‘healthy’ dessert but I like to add them anyway!

“Authentic South Indian Food”

Rating - 3 out of 5

One of the best encounters I had with South Indian food in Salt Lake was at Rasam! Located inside The Stadel in Salt Lake, the name of this restaurant is typical of the food it serves. Rasam, a vegetarian restaurant, serves traditional South Indian food. This restaurant is one in my list of South Indian restaurants in Kolkata which lives up to my expectations and taste of acceptable South Indian food.

The ambience is calm and peaceful which is perfect to enjoy your meal. The decor, with brass diyas and Kathakali masks, lends grace to the interiors. The traditional south Indian touch is also added in the form of ethnic wooden artefacts and idols. This joint is open only for lunch and dinner. The restaurant is clean and tidy, and maintains hygiene levels for healthy food. The staff is courteous and helpful.

Coming to the food, their South Indian lassi is one of a kind and not found anywhere else in Kolkata. It is an extremely healthy drink and a gem in their crown. Their onion tomato uttapam was very good and perfectly cooked. Their cheese dosa had lots of cheese in it and is a treat for cheese lovers. People who want to try traditional dosas can munch on a Mysore dosa or Dhania dosa. Their coconut chutney and sambar however, need more attention and are a bit of a let-down.

Rasam offers some nice South Indian meals at affordable prices. If South Indian food is what you are looking for, try Rasam once if you are in Salt Lake.

Tip. Ask for their special coconut chutney – it is better than the regular one they serve.

The Legend of Hercules: A Larger Than Life Take on the Original Superhero

The Legend of Hercules, formerly known as Hercules: The Legend Begins and Hercules 3D is an upcoming action movie, set to release on 10th January 2014. Directed by Renny Harlin and co-written by Daniel Giat, Giulio Steve and Sean Hood, this film star Kellan Lutz, Gaia Weiss, Scott Adkins, Liam Garrigan and Roxanne McKee. It is delightful for any full time writer to write a review on this film.

The film stars Kellan Lutz as the mythical hero Hercules and depicts the story of this brave Grecian warrior. This is a story of love, lust and bravery where a beautiful Grecian queen succumbs to the advances of Zeus, god of sky and thunder, to bear his demigod son Hercules. He is half-man and half god, blessed with super human strength, whose fate is to overthrow a repressive and tyrant ruler who is also his step-father. He has taken birth to bring peace to a land which suffers only hardship. But unfortunately, Prince Hercules knows nothing of his real identity or his pre determined destiny which is to depose of his step father – the king. In his growing up years, Hercules is shown as an ordinary boy with footloose ways and desperately seeking the love of a fair maiden named Hebe. Hebe is the Princess of Crete and engaged to be married to Hercules’s own brother. In spite of knowing that his brother is set to marry her, he pursues her. This angers the king who was looking for an excuse to banish him from his kingdom. Hercules is betrayed by his stepfather who exiles him and sells him to slavery to punish him for his forbidden love. It is when he is in exile that Hercules learns the truth about himself-about his powers and about his purpose and the lover boy changes into a warrior man. It is a time to choose whether to flee with Hebe or stay and use his immense powers to fulfill his mission of fighting his way back to his rightful kingdom by overthrowing the king and become the true hero of his time.

The Legend of Hercules is the latest offering from the makers of Olympus Has Fallen. This film is a visual treat for the viewers. It has stunning locale and breathtaking gladiator scenes where death matches have been played. The film’s trailer was released on October 13, 2013. The film has the potential to make its viewers positively content with it and transfer them into an ancient Greece where Hercules embarked on a legendary odyssey to reclaim his right. Could have been better but can be watched due to lack of other good films at the BO this weekend.

American Hustle: A Brilliant Film of Love and Law

American Hustle is a crime comedy-drama film, loosely based on the FBI ABSCAM operation in the 70s and 80s. . Released on December 13 2013, it is directed by David O Russell with screenplay by Eric Warren Singer and Russell. The film stars Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Copper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner. It is delightful for any full time writer to write a review on this film.

Irving and Prosser have been arrested in a loan scam, but Richie DiMaso a crazy FBI agent proposes to free them if Irving assists him with four additional arrests. It is a fictional film where Irving Rosenfield (Christian Bale) and Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced by DiMaso (Bradley Copper) to throw themselves into a world of jersey mafia. It is an enchanting but dangerous world. DiMaso wants to set up a sting operation to ensnare corrupt politicians, including the Mayor of New Jersey Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). Both Rosenfeild and Prosser pose as advisors to a fake Sheikh in order to bribe him. Polito is charming and charismatic and is trying to restart gambling in Atlanta City but struggles to raise money. It is also a love story of Irving and Prosser who met at a party, got attracted to each other and fell in love. The only unsavory detail in this love story? That Irving is married to Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence).

DiMaso’s over eagerness to catch Polito makes the latter suspicious and he leaves. But Irving convinces him about the legitimacy of the Sheikh and arranges for a meeting between them. With Polito convinced that the Sheikh is genuine, the former arranges a meeting between Sheikh and a violent mafia overlord Victor Tellegio who demands a $10 million to prove the Sheikh’s identity. On the other side Richie gets attracted to Sydney who tries to back out of the deal. With Carmine’s help Richie succeeds in entrapping a number of Congress members into receiving bribes. But in the end, Richie’s whimsicality convinces Irving to join hands with Polito and tell him the truth. Carmine abuses and assaults Irving and tells the latter that he had only tried to improve New Jersey. In the end a disgraced Richie is removed from the case. Irving and Sydney move in together to start a legitimate art gallery.

In the film, David O Russell has shown a fondness for living on the edge. There is unreliable narration and urgent zooms, extravagantly dressed scammers and mobsters. He has succeeded in bringing out the best from every character with their own quirks and foibles. Unfortunately, the end result is a tad messy and a little long, but you will be positively content with the film and enjoy hanging out with all of the well etched characters.

The Wolf of Wall Street: An Unrealistic Journey of a Real Man

The Wolf of Wall Street released on December 25 2013. It is a black comedy based on Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the same name. The film is directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, with screenplay by Terence Winter and stars Leonardo Dicaprio (who is also a co-producer), Jonah Hill and Matthew McConaughey. It is delightful for any full time writer to write a review on this film.

The film is a true story of Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. He was a Long Island penny stockbroker who had to serve 36 months in prison because he cheated investors in a 1990s securities fraud. This fraudulent activity exposed corruption in Wall Street and banking sector. This is a retelling of a tale where a simple man is swept away by his ambition. He loses his away and gets entangled in an unholy world of money, substance abuse, a troubled family and lies to carve his own world where no body is allowed entry. This is a story of white collar crime where important and known heads would roll if deep secrets are divulged. Belfort and his employees led a life filled with lavish parties and where drugs and sex was a part of their personal as well as professional life. Convicted in 1998, Belfort later became a speaker on sales techniques.

Throughout the film Scorsese does not glorifies him, rather brings his excesses to the fore. He shown Belfort’s flamboyance in the initial days but shows no pity during his lowest lows. Though it is questionable as to how close to truth the facts are, but sometimes it is impossible to digest the extreme turn of events. The film is a telling criticism of the American dream where people spend their lives in pursuit of money and success – whether by hook or crook. The film’s photography and editing is top notch with Leonardo DiCaprio excelling as the titular character. All the supporting characters succeed in convincingly portraying their characters. There is some resemblance with The Goodfellas or Casino, but here the villain is not a gun toting mafia leader. Rather they are apparently respectable people who wear suits, work in proper offices and spend their time in conducting business. But paradoxically, their reputable profession foils their criminal activities.

Martin Scorsese’s brilliance turns this serious black comedy into an uproarious karmic comedy. Though teeming with narcotics, nudity and slangs, this film does not repulse the audience. On contrary this is one of the best films of 2013. It is defiant, indecent, rebellious and rude and will positively content the viewers.

Dhoom Machale with Dhoom 3

The year 2013 has been a fantastic year as far as box office collection is concerned, with several films making it to the 200 crore club. Chennai Express and Krrish 3 crossed the 200 crore mark and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani almost touched the 200 crore mark.

Dhoom 3 is the latest addition to the 200 crore club, and is still going strong. It seems that it will be the only entrant to the 300 crore club as well. So, as promised by its makers Yash Raj Films, the year has indeed ended with a Dhoom. Chicago has been shot slickly with all its landmarks getting prominence. Katrina Kaif looked beautiful but could have been given a meatier role. Her screen time does not justify her position as an A-list actress. But then again, the Dhoom series is all about brawn, bikes and machismo rather than substantial role for its female characters, with only Dhoom 2 being an exception. The chase sequences were thrilling and edge of the seat, though some scenes were repeated. But one thing which was grossly missing was the way in which exciting robbery scenes were shown in Dhoom and Dhoom 2.

Pritam’s music is good, especially Malang and Kamli. All the songs have been shot beautifully with Katrina dancing like a dream. But Dhoom 3 is a little tiresome pre-interval and the length of the film could have been shortened by 20 – 30 minutes. This film is high on sentiment as the makers try to rely on the emotional quotient of the viewer. There are some heart touching scenes, like the one where a repentant Samar tries to make up to a disappointed Jai, whom the former has chided. That scene has a natural innocence and tugs at your heart strings. As far as logic is concerned, none of the earlier films had any, so don’t expect any miracles here. In our country, nonsense is sold in the name of entertainment and D3 is tons better than some of the mindless drivel out this year like Grand Masti. Some parts of the movie have been copied from ‘The Prestige’ and ‘The Dark Knight’, but copying from masterpieces by Nolan is better than making nonsense in the name of films.

As far as acting is concerned, Abhishek plays ACP Jai in a mechanical manner. But Uday Chopra is better in his swansong film than he was in the last two films. It is Aamir who takes the cake. It is his movie all the way. Acting is his strong point, and he has not disappointed. Thank god Vijay Krishna Acharya has recovered from the debacle of Tashan to make an extravagant film like Dhoom 3 with fantastic cinematography. Overall, it is a good Christmas and New Year watch with friends or family though I hope Aamir sticks to doing single starrers – he gets much better results that way!
